[Bug 374525] [NEW] xfce4-terminal stops redrawing

2009-05-10 Thread Lars Volker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfce4-terminal

The terminal windows occasionally stop redrawing, when they are covered
by another window and uncovered again. It doesn't seem to matter, which
window covers the terminal. As soon as the content of the text-pane
changes the affected regions become redrawn. A minimize fixes the
behaviour for a few minutes, until the terminal start to behave like
that again.

The version of xfce4-terminal is 0.2.8-5ubuntu1. The version of xorg-
server is 1:7.4~5ubuntu3.

The graphic driver used is xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.4.1-1ubuntu10.4.

All this happens on a Lenovo T400, xorg report in its logfile a
"Intel(R) Mobile IntelĀ® GM45 Express Chipset".

Attached are two screenshots of this behaviour.

As the versions might tell, it happens on Intrepid, x86_64.

some direction?

[Bug 44586] Re: screen refresh not consistent, SDL suffers

2008-08-31 Thread Lars Volker
OK. After i read about this bug being closed, i upgraded to hardy to
see, if i can reproduce the behaviour there. And voila, it still occurs.
However i'm getting used to it:(.

Here are the requested Xorg.log and a screenshot of what should be a

[Bug 411704] Re: intermittent system crashes supposedly caused by intel xorg driver

2009-08-13 Thread Lars Volker
I experienced the same behaviour during the last 2 days. Now I did an
aptitude safe-upgrade with the result, that more and more system error
similiar to the ones above show up. I, too use the Intel-driver on an
Lenovo T400 notebook.

Right now I bootet to an Live USB-Stick, without any errors arising in
the system log so far, so it looks, as if my installation is corrupt.

I also did an memtest86 test of the system, which showed no errors.

Attached is the output from dmesg, taken until X crashed due to multiple
xfce-applets failing.

Regards, Lars

Changing the display adapter does seem to help. The T400 has an
additional Radeon card built in, which i enabled in the bios. Using the
radeon driver, i could not observe the errors occuring with the intel
card.

[Bug 62751] Re: Upstart doesn't activate luks volumes (also non luks) in cryptsetup

2007-02-07 Thread Lars Volker
today i spent a whole 10hours on updating from dapper to edgy. Most of
the time i spent while trying to debug the latest cryptsetup-package i
compiled from feisty sources - with the final conclusion that it
couldn't work on my installation because the patches suggested in this
bug rely on /usr/bin/openvt which won't work for anyone who has /usr on
a separate volume like i do.

I can't however think of a better circumvention than commenting out that
lines and replacing <&1 by "< /dev/console > /dev/console 2>&1" where
necessary.

Would one with greater knowledge of the situation please change the
scripts to make them run on systems with separate /usr.

Thanks
Lars

[Bug 566900] [NEW] gnome-screensaver doesn't run in xfce4-session

[Bug 199803] Re: Restarting X causes Xfce Xfapplet with Gnome System Monitor to fail

2010-04-21 Thread Lars Volker
Yes, I have been seeing the same behaviour as #9 since karmic i think.
However it is still present in lucid. Usually after a relogin the system
usage goes up to 100% for each instance of xfapplet set up. Here it
happens for gnome sensors-applet as well as the clock and the link
monitor.

What can i do to capture debugging data?

PS: Sorry for searching for a bug report on this so late.

[Bug 296750] Re: "special device /dev/dm-0 does not exist" when mounting an encrypted drive

2010-03-27 Thread Lars Volker
I further investigated this issue and found out the following:

Whenever it works, the hal entry for the unlocked device, which should get
mounted, contains the following line:
  block.device = '/dev/mapper/luks_crypto_fb656bfe-460b-4437-97d6-93bb6e9e66c4'
 (string)

Whenever it doesn't work, this line reads:
  block.device = '/dev/dm-4'  (string)

So this is the reason, the device cannot be mounted by gnome-mount. How
are these entries created? During this conversation
(http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/hal/2008-April/011440.html) a
race condition is described, which could cause hal to pickup on the dm-4
device and not notice the change after it has been unlocked.

Could this be the case here?

[Bug 576369] [NEW] Manpage is not consistent with actual behaviour

2010-05-06 Thread Lars Volker
Public bug reported:

The algorithm driving fan control is described in the manpage, including
the following statement about the actual mapping from temperature to fan
speed:

"Currently the speed increases quadratically with rising temperature."

However the following function seems to be used by the fancontrol
shellscript:

 line 442:
pwmval="(${tval}-${mint})*(${maxpwm}-${minso})/(${maxt}-${mint})+${minso}"

This however does look like a linear mapping, especially the (tval -
min) / (max-min) part. Therefore I suggest to either correct the manpage
or to change the way the value is calculated. Upstream says the manpages
are not up-to-date (http://www.lm-sensors.org/wiki/Documentation).

[Bug 510074] [NEW] drag file starts selection

2010-01-20 Thread Lars Volker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunar

When I try to drag a file to another folder/window, I currently have to
select it first with a single click. By dragging an unselected file, a
selection box is created selecting other files instead of moving the

[Bug 527738] [NEW] Asks twice for password when opening dm-crypt encrypted devices

2010-02-25 Thread Lars Volker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunar-volman

I have several external drives encrypted with cryptsetup/luks. Whenever
one is plugged in, thunar-volman displays a popup asking for the
passphrase. After the passphrase is entered, it immediately asks again.
Pressing "Ignore" makes it continue as expected. If I enter the
passphrase again, I get the error "/dev/sdc1 is already setup?". Also
the device is not mounted iff you enter the passphrase twice.

Both devices contain only one partition formatted with luks and ext4. I
already checked, that I only have on instance of thunar-volman running,
so I suppose this is a new bug.

2009-09-01 Thread Lars Volker
I discovered this error message during shutdown:

Also the box did not power off, so I had to manally switch it off by
pressing the on/off button. However I'm not sure, if this is related.

It is a Lenovo T400 as well, so the same details as in Brians
description apply.

[Bug 428613] [NEW] High CPU load by xorg when xfce-cpugraph-plugin is enabled

2009-09-12 Thread Lars Volker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfce4-cpugraph-plugin

Having the cpugraph plugin enabled in xfce causes the xorg process to
occupy more than 10% of cputime at a constant rate. Enabling the
systemload-plugin adds another 10% to the occupied cputime, which then
stays at over 20%.

[Bug 429278] [NEW] Missing dependency "rpm" causes: Unable to open /usr/lib/rpm/rpmrc for reading: No such file or directory.

2009-09-14 Thread Lars Volker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: osc

When installing "osc", "rpm" should be installed as a dependency.
Otherwise, running "osc up" on a local copy, returns "Unable to open
/usr/lib/rpm/rpmrc for reading: No such file or directory.".

aptitude install rpm fixes the error, however adding rpm as a dep seems
more reasonable to me.

[Bug 430542] [NEW] lvm volumes fail to mount when specified as /dev/vg-name/volume

2009-09-16 Thread Lars Volker

Binary package hint: lvm2

During startup, mountall fails to mount volumes specified in /etc/fstab
as /dev/vg_name/volume_name but succeeds if specified as /dev/mapper
/vg_name-volume_name.

As slangasek suggested, /dev/vg_name only contains symlinks to
/dev/mapper which might cause the issue.

[Bug 411042] Re: application-specific volume control affects master volume

2009-09-20 Thread Lars Volker
I just found this bug report and am "affected" as well. I actually used
inears, when i psyched myself by an application turning master-volume
up. I've read the first few posts of the conversation mentioned by Janne
and it seems totally unintuitive to me. Is there a way to opt in favor
of changing the behaviour in karmic.

Setting flat-volumes = no and restarting pulseaudio fixed it for me.

[Bug 540163] [NEW] mount: special device /dev/dm-4 does not exist .

2010-03-17 Thread Lars Volker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunar-volman

Sometimes when I plugin an encrypted disk and enter the password, I get
the error "mount: special device /dev/dm-X does not exist .".

This might be related to bug #527738 but it is clearly a different
symptom. Anyone else with this? Any ideas on how to debug. dmesg /
syslog don't help much.

[Bug 540259] [NEW] History search should not only look at the beginning of each command

2010-03-17 Thread Lars Volker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfce4-utils

When you type a recently used command into xfrun4, it only searches at
the beginnings of each history line. If you look for a script or command
you started with an absolute path, e.g. /usr/bin/foo or /home/me/tools
/start-program.sh, it would be nice, if you could just type any
substring the next time you run xfrun4.

[Bug 545931] Re: When printing, the page numbers are calculated wrongly

2010-04-08 Thread Lars Volker
I just checked version 2.30.0 of evince which was installed by
debootstrap for lucid. The error still occurs in the same way it does
with 2.28.1 of karmic. Printing to a physical device as well as printing
to a PDF file both show the same erratic behaviour.

Oh, and to contribute to the solution: As a workaround, you can add

alias nc='nc -q 1' to your ~./.bash_aliases to revert to the old
behaviour (but only for your user).

[Bug 564831] [NEW] xfce4-session fails to include variables into environment output by gnome-keyring-daemon --start

2010-04-16 Thread Lars Volker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfce4-session

I'd like to use the ssh-agent functionality provided by gnome-keyring-
daemon, but i can't get it to work for the following reason.

During login, the keyring-daemon is started via dbus, right? If it is started
by dbus, then that might as well be the source of my trouble:
http://live.gnome.org/GnomeKeyring/RunningDaemon
It says, that launching gnome-keyring-daemon from dbus only provides "basic
password operations" without further functionality like ssh-agent. Bug #357346
sounds, as if xfce4-session indeed relies on dbus to start the keyring-daemon.

However starting the daemon consists of two steps, the second of which
is running "gnome-keyring-daemon --start" and including the printed
information into the environment. In /etc/xdg/autostart there are three
file each of which controls a single feature of gnome-keyring-daemon.
Alltogether they are started by xfce4-session, but their printed
variables are not included into the env, as they are not surrounded by
eval ``. Therefore, the variable definitions show up in ~/.xsession-
errors.

I think i read some time ago, that gnome-keyring-daemon was capable of
registering the environment-variables in the session via dbus. However
this also doesn't happen, which means, SSH_AUTH_SOCK does not get set.

However, in all this mess, GNOME_KEYRING_PID gets set. If i run ' eval
`gnome-keyring-daemon --start` ' in .xprofile, i break the password
storage, which indicates, that this seems to happen before dbus (but
after pam of course).

If i run
eval `gnome-keyring-daemon --start
export GNOME_KEYRING_CONTROL SSH_AUTH_SOCK
then the ssh-agent is working in this shell, but of course nowhere else.

[Bug 564831] Re: xfce4-session fails to include variables into environment output by gnome-keyring-daemon --start

2010-04-16 Thread Lars Volker
I found out the following:

- gnome-keyring-daemon --login gets started by gdm right after login.
- gdm then starts xfce, which calls gnome-keyring-daemon --start -c {ssh...}
- in /var/log/auth.log, the following error appears:

Apr 17 01:50:20 feorag gnome-keyring-daemon[7103]: couldn't set
environment variable in session: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was
not provided by any .service files

Indeed, I don't find any files named like that in /usr/share/dbus-1.

Also I found this thread: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/13986
Maybe it is related.

[Bug 565330] [NEW] Extended text selection does not work

2010-04-17 Thread Lars Volker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfce4-terminal

In current lucid, the extended text selection doesn't work.

To reproduce:

-cat some text to the terminal.
- select a part of it with the mouse
- use shift+leftclick to select some more text
- copy and paste

This only copies the part of the text, that was already marked after
step 2 and omits the additionally marked part. It used to work under
karmic though, so this is a regression.

[Bug 564633] Re: system-config-printer: make driver installation optional

2010-04-17 Thread Lars Volker
I second that. Plus I'd like to _chose_, whether I want jockey to step
in my way or whether I'd just like to select the driver from the list of
installed ones. For a brother-printer which works after installing one
single .deb (MFC 7820N, brother-cups-wrapper-laser), jockey installed 34
packages, just to import some rpm-based driver. What a nonsense.

(it installed html2text po-debconf debhelper librpmio0 rpm-common
librpm0 librpmbuild0 rpm2cpio rpm alien libsys-hostname-long-perl
libmail-sendmail-perl libqt3-mt libqt4-network libqt4-assistant
libqt4-xml libqt4-dbus libqt4-script libqt4-designer libqt4-svg
libqt4-opengl libqt4-gui libqt4-sql libqt4-sql-sqlite m4 ncurses-term
pax lsb-core lsb-graphics lsb-cxx lsb-desktop lsb-printing lsb
openprinting-ppds-postscript-brother)

I really appreciate the possibility to have jockey care for the whole
driver installation, but I also would like to skip the step (which I did
by pressing "Close" in Jockey) altogether.

Regards, Lars

[Bug 568314] [NEW] Bash should not print ^C when pressing ctrl-c to abort reverse history search

2010-04-22 Thread Lars Volker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash

When doing a regex history search by pressing ctrl+R and then typing
some text, you often want to abort the search. If you do that with
ctrl-C, in order not to accidentally run the command, then the shell
prints a ^C inside the command, overwriting whatever was at that
position before. This behavior also happens, when you interrupt any
running command on the shell, thus signaling that the end of output is
not the end as actually printed by the program.

So, in the first case it's a bug (or at least annoying), in the second
it might be regarded a feature.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open Shell
2. Press ctrl-R, type "ls"
3. Press ctrl-C

It's also visible if you run "sleep 10" and press ctrl-C or if you just
press ctrl-C when on an idle prompt.

I've tested it with the xfce4-terminal and xterm, and in each with bash,
dash and sh. Someone in IRC figured out, that zsh doesn't show this
behavior. Someone else reported, that it happens in gentoo as well,
suggesting that it might be an upstream problem.

The problem first appeared with karmic. It might be a readline issue as
well.

[Bug 583476] [NEW] Installing xmind breaks grep-status

2010-05-20 Thread Lars Volker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dctrl-tools

After installation of XMind from http://www.xmind.net/, grep-status is
broken. This in turn leads to breakage of tab-completion of the aptitude
reinstall command. The error looks like this:

r...@eekkater:~# aptitude reinstall grep-status: /var/lib/dpkg/status:11728:
expected a colon
.grep-status: /var/lib/dpkg/status:11728: expected a colon
.
Display all 490 possibilities? (y or n)
r...@eekkater:~#

The section of /var/lib/dpkg/status in question is the following:

Package: xmind
Status: install ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: multiverse/text
Installed-Size: 43060
Maintainer: xmind
Architecture: amd64
Version: 3.1.1.200912022330
Depends: libgtk2.0-0 (>= 2.8.0), openjdk-6-jre | sun-java5-jre | sun-java6-jre
Description: XMind - Brainstorming and Mind Mapping
XMind, is a great brainstorming and mind mapping software tool,
developed by XMind Ltd. It helps people to capture ideas, organize to
various charts, and share them for collaboration. It supports mind maps,
fishbone diagrams, tree diagrams, org-charts, logic charts, and even
spreadsheets. It's often used for knowledge management, meeting minutes,
task management, and GTD. XMind is compatible with Freemind/Mindmanager.

XMind has two editions, XMind, an open source software and XMind Pro.
XMind is dual licensed under 2 open source licenses: the Eclipse Public
License v1.0 (EPL) and the GNU Lesser General Public License v3 (LGPL).
XMind Pro is a subscription-based software, and starts with $49 per year.

Is there a problem with grep-status or is XMind metadata malformed
(which should have prevented it from installing)?

Regards, Lars
