[Bug 223476] Re: Failure to have openoffice.org-math intalled causes "data corruption"

2008-10-18 Thread Jags_FL
Going through the comments I couldn't help but notice that by not
including packages like these might free up some space on Desktop/Live
CD, though I don't know how much or how many are there in first place :

Packages most user may not need:

- splix : Driver for samsung laser printers
- min12xxw : Driver for KonicaMinolta PagePro

vs

Package most users would certainly need:

- OpenOffice.org

Just my 2 cents, - jags

[Bug 290024] Re: Cruft Remover removed most of the installed packages

2008-11-01 Thread Jags_FL
Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 (installed from i386 Desktop/Live CD) System
Cleaner / Cruft Remover removes installed packages :

Ok, I ran Cruft Remover (under System > Administration) on a fresh
Intrepid final install, it removed/deleted all the packages that were
NOT installed by Synaptic:

1, OpenOffice.org 3.0
2, Solaris Nimbus theme
3, TrueCrypt

And not just "the boxes, that held the installed programs" but they were
gone/removed completely from Main Menu, AWN & from Themes (Appearance
Preferences) too.

I repeated installations/removals three times and all the time Cruft
Remover removed all three installations completely. Cruft Remover

Warnings ??

Shouldn't System Cleaner / Cruft Remover be just "cleaning" unwanted
stuff instead of removing/deleting packages/apps that are NOT unwanted.
And it removed 'em even when they were in use... like Nimbus theme and
OpenOffice Writer but still CR removed 'em.

[Bug 403480] [NEW] Restricted Hardware Drivers Available Window Doesn't Show Full Version Number

2009-07-23 Thread Jags_FL
Public bug reported:

In case of Nvidia 5200 series, Jockey/ restricted hardware drivers
available window list just "version 173" instead of "version 173.14.16".

There's only way to find full version number out is by install the
driver and keep looking for version number at the system reboot.

But by that time is too late as Nvidia 173.14.16 renders Karmic Alpha 3
installation unusable.

Possible solutions:
(1) To offer the restricted hardware drivers ONLY if the drivers are for the
installed kernel (2.6.31-3 in this case) and not gonna render the system
unusable.
(2) Show the full version number so user can decide whether to install the
restricted driver or keep using the system without installing restricted
hardware drivers (at least this way system will be usable).

Thanks.

BTW the latest drivers available at Nvidia is 173.14.20 (
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/173.14.20/ : released on
June-27, '09)

[Bug 195717] [NEW] Debian Daily Feb-26, '08 i386 " netinst " Get Stuck at 65% - Configuring ssl-cert

2008-02-26 Thread Jags_FL
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

I'm trying to install Debian Daily Build i386 " netinst " ( Feb 26, `08,
142 MB from this link: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-
builds/daily/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso )
but it get stuck at 65% saying " Configuring ssl-cert ".

netinst installs base system and retrieves / downloads selected packages
and starts preparing / configuring just fine but stops at 65% saying "
Configuring ssl-cert ", under "Select and Install Software". I repeated
the whole process twice with same result. ( I left it this stage for 75
minutes but installation didn't move forward beyond 65% )

On the same machine and partition, Feb-11 daily DVD image installed just
fine.

Thought some one will like to know about this to fix it. - Jags

[Bug 434612] [NEW] Ubuntu Karmic Daily-Live Sept 22 with Atheros AR 5211 802.11 ab NIC Won't Connect to an Unsecured Wireless Network

2009-09-22 Thread Jags_FL

I have Ubuntu Karmic Daily-Live Sept 22 installed ( from karmic-

It does connect to wired / WPA/WPA2 secured wireless network but not to

It tries to connect for 2/3 minutes and then says (unsecured) wireless
network has disconnected. Just updated (5:00 AM Pacific Sept 22, '09)
using wired network but to no avail.

[Bug 438136] Re: palimpsest bad sectors false positive

2009-11-18 Thread Jags_FL
I get the same error, Disk Has Many Bad Sectors, in Palimpsest Disk
Utility while trying to install Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 from 32-bit Live CD
too. Hard drive is 7 months old 320GB Samsung HM320JI.

After getting this warning in Karmic I ran the Samsung HDD Diagnostic
Utility (especially 4+ hr read surface scan) and drive passed all the
tests. (
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/productmodel.do?group=&type=62&subtype=67&model_cd=324&dType=G&mType=SW&tab=down&ppmi=1159
)

Now even though drive passed all Samsung tests, Palimpsest still says
3725 sectors are bad under "Current Pending Sector Count" in more
info/SMART data window. Is this bug related to Samsung drive or
something? As the number of Samsung drives mentioned in this thread is
way higher than any other brand.

I don't know if there's pattern or something but before trying to
install Karmic I ran DBAN, installed Windows 7 and now I'm getting bad
sectors warning everytime when Windows 7 boots up too.

[Bug 426048] [NEW] Ubuntu Karmic Alpha5 with Atheros AR 5211 802.11 ab NIC Won't Connect to an Unsecured Wireless Network

2009-09-07 Thread Jags_FL
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I have Ubuntu Karmic Alpha5 installed ( from karmic-desktop-i386.iso )
on Toshiba laptop with Atheros AR 5211 ab NIC.

It does connect to wired / WPA/WPA2 secured wireless network but not to
an unsecured wireless network.

It tries to connect for 2/3 minutes and then says (unsecured) wireless
network has disconnected. Just updated (7:00 PM Pacific Sept 07, '09)
using wired network but to no avail.

** Affects: network-manager (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 426048] Re: [ath5k] Ubuntu Karmic Alpha5 with Atheros AR 5211 802.11 ab NIC Won't Connect to an Unsecured Wireless Network

2009-10-26 Thread Jags_FL

I've submitted four bug reports and follow-up but it sounds like its not
gonna be fixed in time for Karmic 9.10 :(

[Bug 426048] Re: [ath5k] Ubuntu Karmic Alpha5 with Atheros AR 5211 802.11 ab NIC Won't Connect to an Unsecured Wireless Network

2009-10-27 Thread Jags_FL
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 461419 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/461419

@ Lorenco Trichardt

Yes I totally disagree that, this bug # 426048 should not be made
duplicate of bug # 461419 because:

(1) Bug # 461419 description twice mentions of "IBM hardware" while my
laptop is Toshiba not IBM.

(2) Bug # 461419 also mentions "connection and performance issues on IBM
hardware" while I'm having one specific issue that it does not connect
_at all_ to an unsecured wireless network. (it works just fine with a
secured wireless network)

(3) Bug # 461419 description also clarifies to post comment etc ONLY
"If you are affected by this issue using the ath5k driver on IBM
hardware" let me repeat "issue using the ath5k driver on IBM
hardware"

I've already submitted _apport-collect 426048 to attach valuable infos_
as asked by Alexander Sack on October 05, '09

If anyone still wants me to run any test to get more data etc just let
me know, many thanks.

Regarding "I have seen a slight improvement in the backports module, can
you also try that and ping me on that ?"

Ok I have added backports repository in /etc/apt/sources.list. Now how
do I do install "backports module" related to ath5k ?

Thanks.
