[Bug 137598] Re: Screen brightness resets to default (maximum) on idle with AC plugged in

2009-10-04 Thread Graham F
Just upgraded to the Karmic Beta - and the whole screen brightness alternates
(low/high) every 1/2 second until the power applet kicks in and is displayed.
Once the Gnome power manager 2.28.0 applet starts - the display is fine, and it
stablises. This wasn't the case in 9.1 Jaunty.
Is this related?

power-manager applet (2.28.0) has loaded. This was a prblem with all the
alp Karmic releases and is still in the current karmic beta release.

[Bug 444858] [NEW] Failing to show battery details

2009-10-06 Thread Graham F
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Performed a Karmic Koala beta upgrade tonight and the following items happened
 - Icon for the gnome-power-manager changed to a monotchrome 2 pin AC plug
 - applet has stopped recognising that there even is a battery on the MSI Wind
netbook I'm using, so there is no recognistion of changing from AC to battery,
no power history, or charge graphs. Its gone completely brain dead!
A new kernel image was loaded as part of this upgrade I believe.

I have the following errors in SYSlog - which make me think the devkit
layer has a problem

[Bug 445204] [NEW] all file types listed as plain text

2009-10-07 Thread Graham F
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-mime-data

downloaded update this morning7-Oct-09, and the mime type package was
downloaded. All the file types are now listed as plain text - e.g. .jpg
are listed as plain text and open by default in gedit. I don't know
enough about mime-types in gnome to fix this.

[Bug 445689] [NEW] evince no longer renders PDF files

2009-10-07 Thread Graham F
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Since this evening's Karmic beta upgrade PDF files no longer open / are
completely blank with no menu options. ANY pdf gives this error.
Attempting to open any other file prompts for a document recovery - but
that also fails and doesn't render any file either.

2009-10-07 Thread Graham F
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 444962 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/444962

Nope it does change anything! evince comes up as a completely blank
window -even without a toolbar. This isn't a mime type issue -
something more fundamental has broken. xpdf renders the pdf's just fine.

This is NOT a duplicate of /444962 as the mime types issue is fixed on
my machine. (it was broken too - but its fixed now)

I didn't know how to setup a guest session - so I created a new user,
and logged in as the new user. Attempting to view a PDF gave rise to a
crash (bug ...478) with an assert failure. So to answer you question -
yes - evince still doesn't work even when logged into a difference
account.

Re: [Bug 446748] Re: evince assert failure: EvinceDocument:ERROR:ev-file-helpers.c:67:ev_tmp_dir: assertion failed: (exists)

2009-10-20 Thread Graham F
My mount statements include
none on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev)
none on /var/run type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,mode=0755)
none on /var/lock type tmpfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
tmpfs on /mnt/tmp type tmpfs (rw,noatime,size=300M,nr_inodes=10k,mode=1777)

so I'm guessing (as I can never remember the syntax here) that my tmpfs
is also a shared mem device (or is this saying shared mem is also
mounted as tmpfs?)

[Bug 441129] [NEW] invalid date time prevents system boot

2009-10-03 Thread Graham F
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

Installing Karmic Koala Beta on hardware without a functional system
clock is not possible. I briefly see an error message about hal time
sync (or similar!) and then the whole computer hangs. This is from the
live CD, trying to build a laptop with a new hard-drive. Compaq Evo
n610c - compaq DO NOT have a BIOS ability to set the clock - so no
install is possible. This is the only distro I have tried which fails to
boot on this hardware. Only way to fix this (I know of) is to fix the
clock, install a different OS to set the time, then install Karmic.
Would be simpler if it just asked for the date :-)

(f-spot:1976): GdkPixbuf-WARNING **: GdkPixbufLoader finalized without calling
gdk_pixbuf_loader_close() - this is not allowed. You must explicitly end the
data stream to the loader before dropping the last reference.
The program 'f-spot' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 5359 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
