[Bug 458167] [NEW] Volume Mixer changes PCM volume slightly when I change master volume

2009-10-22 Thread Dimitri Nüscheler
Public bug reported:

When I change Master Volume in Gnome Mixer PCM value is changed as well 1 or 2
percent.
Appears in Ubuntu 9.10

I expect that changing Master Volume under no circumstances touches any
of the other Volume controls:

Chip: Nvidia MCP78 HDMI

[Bug 803943] Re: compiz consuming a lot of cpu

2012-05-06 Thread Dimitri Nüscheler
I can also confirm that disabling vsync results in low cpu usage in unity.
Dropped from about 40% to 5% when moving windows.
What do you need vsync for anyway? The applications take care of their window
content being in sync themselves.

[Bug 1055310] [NEW] Ubuntu Software Center does not resume downloads

2012-09-23 Thread Dimitri Nüscheler
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to download "Torchight" from Humble Indie Bundle 6 (among others).
Occassionally my internet connection breaks (it's a mobile connection, not the
most stable). This is normally not a problem, except for software-center which
is the only piece of software on my computer which is unable to deal with that,
all other download software is capable of resuming (apt-get, ktorrent).
Unfortunately I didn't know and after downloading 300MB it started again.

[Bug 803943] Re: compiz consuming a lot of cpu

2012-06-04 Thread Dimitri Nüscheler
When disabling vsync I have an additional problem next to tearing, which
makes performance sluggish and increases tearing even more. Ubuntu
wrongly thinks that my screens refresh rate is 50 when it is 60. Forcing
compositing to 60hz improves the experience a lot. It's probably not as
good as vsync, but it's very comfortable. I was never a big fan of vsync
though, because it always at's a tiny tiny little delay. it's not
instantanously.

[Bug 1046872] [NEW] Dash opens with a delay of about half a second after pressing and releasing the super key

2012-09-06 Thread Dimitri Nüscheler
Public bug reported:

The delay is always there. There seems to be no delay in Gnome for the
comparable situation.
I expect the Dash to appear immediately. As fast as you'd expect that a
character appears when you type text.

Maybe it's because the transparency effect in Gnome uses less archaic
ways of doing it, but I'm not sure about that. I just noticed that the
dash transparency is CPU intensive, but that's another problem.

[Bug 1010898] Re: unity transparency seems to use CPU

2012-06-10 Thread Dimitri Nüscheler
When I switch to the nouveau driver I have the same behaviour as you
with Intel graphics.

But do we know where transparency is calculated, do you know?

Assuming it uses the CPU, then the reason why nouveau and intel drivers
don't utilize the CPU is as you said a lower frame rate such that
transparency calculations don't need to be done that often. But then
there must be some bottleneck elsewhere. The drivers readback? (If it's
done on the CPU it must use the readback, because the already composited
stuff isn't found anywhere in the CPU memory - right?).

[Bug 1010898] Re: unity transparency seems to use CPU

2012-06-10 Thread Dimitri Nüscheler
I concluded slightly wrong in my last post. If blurring can lower CPU
usage it is likely that it doesn't take place on the CPU.

I wouldn't know about Windows 7 - I know it has some blur, but only for
very small areas as far as I remember.

And blur isn't really my problem because I can live without it, but then
there is still the normal transparency which slows things down a bit.

I might be a bit picky about performance and smoothness, in my opinion
anything below a constant 60 frames per second is bad, but 10.04 is that
smooth on my (not very old) system. Even on a 7 year old laptop of mine
with intel graphics. Unfortunately it is no longer supported in a year.

A workaround would be to disable transparency (but that's not possible -
or is it?), or to use static transparency (but that looks inconsistent,
and also causes a slight delay during the transition from desktop to
dash).

[Bug 1010898] Re: unity transparency seems to use CPU

2012-06-10 Thread Dimitri Nüscheler
I did a further test, again with the initial configuration (Nvidia
proprietary driver). I started ET Racer on a slope and maximized the
window.

I then set the background of the gnome-terminal to transparent. The
impact of the terminal maximized with top running in it equals the
impact of the gnome-terminal made transparent using the Opacity..-Plugin
in CCSM -> no impact.

So I don't just have single parameter transparency being faster than
unitys transparency, but also transparency where the font remains opaque
- just like unity.

[Bug 1017887] [NEW] unity responds non-deterministically on Super-Key & other input

2012-06-26 Thread Dimitri Nüscheler
Public bug reported:

Initial position is "dash closed"

1. Pressing (and Releasing) the Super-Key an odd number of times doesn't
necessarily result in having an open dash, but this is expected
2. same as 1. with even number of key strokes doesn't necessarily result in
closed dash necessariy, but it expected
3. Pressing and Releasing and then Pressing without Releasing doesn't
necessarily result in the dash and help open
4. Super-Key and then typing any word doesn't necessarily result in the whole
word being typed into the dash search but whatever other window that was open
last.

In order to reproduce this you should type rather fast. e.g. for 1) do 7
key-strokes in 1-2 seconds.

Why is this a problem:

1.) The user can't depend on the same actions having the same result except if
he waits for the UI reaction. This forces the user to slow down (ping pong slow
down) and to adapt to the performance uf the underlying system.
2.) Non-deterministic behaviour lets the user tend to retry which may result in
an "explosive" UI response.

[Bug 1009181] Re: Increased CPU usage when moving windows during workspace-overview

2012-06-05 Thread Dimitri Nüscheler
When moving windows in a normal situation I have compiz using about
13-14% of the CPU and Xorg also about 13-14%.

In the workspace overview Xorg uses around 45% of the CPU when moving
windows and compiz about 20%.

I also just noticed that in workspace overview Xorg seems to stick to a
base load of 20, also when no user action occurs.

usage goes up as described.

[Bug 1009181] Re: Expo view is CPU intensive

2012-06-06 Thread Dimitri Nüscheler
I use NVIDIA 295.49, Ubuntu 12.04 64bit on an Acer Aspire 5738ZG.

I'm suddenly unable to reproduce to problem entirely. Maybe because I'm
on battery power. (That's the only thing I changed).

In the current situation it increases Xorg CPU usage only to about
8-9%, but compiz usage still goes up to 20-24%.

The CPU usage increases for both processes when I only drag the window,
but don't move it. (As if it was polling for something instead of
waiting for an event)

[Bug 865006] Re: [regression] Unity panel transparency (active blur) not updating properly

2012-06-07 Thread Dimitri Nüscheler
I'm not quite sure if this is related to the bug - but where is
transparency calculated? On the CPU or GPU?

Too me the transparency update behaviour reminds me of the pre-compiz
days fake transparency seen in Eterm, or aterm.

I even think it's hard to encounter this bug if the transparency is
calculated on the GPU, because you'd need to "keep" an old texture, for
transparency you usually don't for being a trivial operation on the GPU,
so you avoid caching and just recalculate every frame.

I guess you would only cache it if you use the CPU for calculating
transparency. But that's not a good idea, right?

However, I think the update-behaviour should be in sync with the compiz
refresh cycles, because the idea must be "every frame is perfect".

[Bug 1010898] [NEW] unity transparency seems to use CPU

2012-06-09 Thread Dimitri Nüscheler
Public bug reported:

When I play a video or open an opengl game and then open the dash or
press the Super-Key until the Dash-Help appears, then the CPU usage is
utilized heavily while the HUD shows up, when I expected no increased
CPU usage after the transitition (which is sluggish by the way), because
no additional operations on the CPU need to be done after the dash help
is opened. The only thing I can think of is transparency which needs to
be calculated, because the video is playing always needs to be updated,
but this shouldn't increase CPU usage, because it _should_ take place on
the GPU for being a purely graphical operation which my graphics can do
easily (blur inclusive).

The CPU utilization is lower if you switch from blur to no blur, so this
fortifies my assumption that the actual graphical transparency
calculation takes place on the CPU or that some ping pong effect moves
buffers from GPU to CPU and back, slowing things down, i don't know
after all.

Playing a video increases compiz CPU utilization from ~5 to ~20 and and
Xorg cpu utilization from ~5 to ~28

Also the FPS of video games decreases when the dash is activated, with
blur even more.

Last but not least, when I playback a video and activate the dash or the
dash help the video shortly interrupts for about ~200ms.

For comparison:
The single-parameter transparency of the compiz-plugin "Opacity, Brightness and
Saturation" does not affect CPU usage at all, at least not visibly.
