[Bug 323157] [NEW] key repeat stops working, no trick restores it
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.15 In Intrepid on my Dell Inspiron 500m, sometimes key repeat stops working for all keys both on the laptop's keyboard and an external USB keyboard. I'm using the computer for hours daily, and this happens not more than once a month on average. None of the tricks mentioned in comments to other bugs about key repeat problems work in my case: - xset r on - xset r 113 - xset r 116 - xset r rate 10 50 - sudo kdbrate -d 1 -r 50 - Option "AutoAddDevices" "off" followed by logout/login - adjusting repeat options in the keyboard layout settings My kernel is Linux veli 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Thu Jan 22 17:22:40 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux This has happened before the last kernel upgrade, probably even before moving from Hardy to Intrepid (fresh install) if my memory serves correct. I'm using dual-head on Intel 855GM. My keyboard layout is a customized dvorak, but changing to a standard Finnish layout and logging out and in doesn't fix the problem. $ xinput list "Virtual core keyboard" id=0[XKeyboard] Num_keys is 248 Min_keycode is 8 Max_keycode is 255 "Virtual core pointer" id=1[XPointer] Num_buttons is 32 Num_axes is 2 Mode is Relative Motion_buffer is 256 Axis 0 : Min_value is 0 Max_value is -1 Resolution is 0 Axis 1 : Min_value is 0 Max_value is -1 Resolution is 0 "" id=2[XExtensionPointer] Num_buttons is 9 Num_axes is 2 Mode is Relative Motion_buffer is 256 Axis 0 : Min_value is -1 Max_value is -1 Resolution is 1 Axis 1 : Min_value is -1 Max_value is -1 Resolution is 1 "Generic Keyboard" id=3[XExtensionKeyboard] Num_keys is 248 Min_keycode is 8 Max_keycode is 255 Last time this happened I was typing in Emacs. [Bug 272418] Re: openbox/Gnome wont launch from gdm
I've experienced this on Ubuntu Netboox Remix 9.04. After installing the openbox packages, selecting the Openbox/GNOME session used Metacity instead of Openbox as the window manager. I verified that the crash/freeze occurs also when Gnome-Do is not running. Also, this also happens when the computer is not idle for an extended time. Geir, I'm unsure if this is a "crash" or a "freeze". The https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze page is confusing: It claims that a backtrace is a non-symptom, but lists "[mi] EQ overflowing" and X freeze as a relevant problem. [Bug 509509] [NEW] non-default color theme corrupted after gnome-settings-daemon restart
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal In Lucid (up-to-date as of 2010-01-17, gnome-terminal 2.28.1-1ubuntu1), whenever gnome-settings-daemon dies, the color theme of open Gnome- Terminal sessions changes, as expected. The colors change to black on light gray (#dcdad5), which apparently is Gnome-Terminal's own default. One would expect the colors to change back when gnome-settings-daemon is started again. However, the colors don't change back to what is set in the profile. Instead I get a strange dark gray (#1a1a1a) on light pink (#e6ddd5) color theme. Selecting another color theme and switching back to the original in Profile Preferences does fix the colors back to normal. This is especially annoying as I've changed the default system color theme to the "Gray on black" built-in theme in Gnome-Terminal. In this case the colors are - gray on light gray after gnome-settings-daemon dies - gray on light pink after gnome-settings-daemon is restarted Due to this bug I've noticed that it's not rare for gnome-settings- daemon to restart. It does that when gnome packages are updated (very often at this point in Lucid), and sometimes for no apparent reason. [Bug 525649] Re: bold and italic styles missing from the Beteckna TTF font
In OpenOffice, the bold and italic buttons appear to change the font style, although I'm not a typography expert and can't verify that the styles look correct. In Inkscape all the styles are visible in the font dialog, and Medium Italic appears to work correctly. The bold styles do not affect most characters, but typing all possible characters from I can get with my keyboard layout, surprisingly, the following characters *do* appear in boldface: £þřœəĸš–žðŋµč Also the euro-cent symbol in the example box of Inkscape's font selection dialog turns into boldface. Adding nomodeset fixes this on my Dell Inspiron 500m with a 82852/855GM and a 1400x1050 display, running kernel 2.6.31-15-generic and Xorg from the xorg-edgers ppa (xorg 7.4+3ubuntu10 and intel driver 2:2.9.1~git- 0ubuntu0tormod). With KSM, watching a DVD with Totem, the framerate goes down to almost 1 fps. VLC is almost ok, 10% of frames dropped with 100% CPU load. Without KSM, VLC is perfect but Totem goes nuts: viewing a DVD works sometimes when using a small window, but never full-screen. It looks like the UI is on top of the video. Also, I think disabling KSM caused another problem: when waking up from suspend-to-RAM for the first time, the display resolution came up lower than normal, and playing a DVD with VLC on XVideo caused a hard lock-up - not even Alt-SysRq-K,S,U,B could boot the machine. I tried suspending again manually after rebooting, and now it worked correctly. The lock-up occurred after the laptop had supended automatically due to being idle (I've set a 30 minute timeout for suspend). I'll keep an eye on the issue and see if there's a specific bug report for it. -- [i855] No Xv support for 82852/855GM (KMS bug) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/395932 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 84931] Re: Various icons don't have a 16x16 icon size
The Reinteract application [1] uses these icons to indicate the status of Python source code displayed in a tab: gtk-ok (16x16 missing for this one) gtk-refresh gtk-apply gtk-dialog Whenever the status changes to "successfully executed", the gtk-ok icon is used. Since 16x16 is missing for that icon, the tab suddenly gets taller which causes an ugly layout change in the window. [Bug 435190] Re: Disk wakes up every 30 minutes and produces errors on dmesg
I peeked at the source code. The ATA smart collect script is called by the daemon like this: /usr/lib/devicekit-disks/devkit-disks-helper-ata-smart-collect /dev/sdb 1 The "1" parameter is the "nowakeup" option. Executing the above call as root always spins up my disk (also when replacing "1" with "0"). The corresponding code is: nowakeup = atoi (argv[2]); if (sk_disk_open (device, &d) != 0) { g_printerr ("Failed to open disk %s: %m\n", device); goto out; } if (sk_disk_check_sleep_mode (d, &awake) != 0) { g_printerr ("Failed to check if disk %s is awake: %m\n", device); goto out; } /* don't wake up disk unless specically asked to */ if (nowakeup && !awake) { g_printerr ("Disk %s is asleep and nowakeup option was passed\n", device); ret = 2; goto out; } So either sk_disk_check_sleep_mode fails to detect that the disk is sleeping, or the nowakeup option is parsed incorrectly. I sprinkled some debug output into job-ata-smart-collect.c and it seems that the sk_disk_open() call spins up the disk even before the sleep mode gets checked. sk_disk_open() is provided by libatasmart4, so should this bug be assigned there? [Bug 435190] Re: Disk wakes up every 30 minutes and produces errors on dmesg

Rich, Thanks for the Fedora bug link. That bug is assigned to the author of libatasmart, so I posted my findings there as well (see comment #15 above), with a link back to this Launchpad bug. ** Also affects: libatasmart (Fedora) via https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=491552 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- Disk wakes up every 30 minutes and produces errors on dmesg https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/435190 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 495066] Re: Lucid netbook-launcher segfaults when started
On my Dell Mini 9, the Live CD behaves as described above. However, when installed onto the internal SSD, Ubuntu Netbook automatically logs in to the standard GNOME desktop by default instead of the netbook interface. If I log out and select the Netbook interface, I get the symptoms described in the description of this bug. I did the install from a USB stick created with unetbootin with all default choices except the Finnish locale and enabling popularity contest. I tested both the live and installed desktop using http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook-remix/daily-live/20100102 /lucid-netbook-i386.iso -- Lucid netbook-launcher segfaults when started https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/495066 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 466109] Re: BUG: Dell Mini 9 wifi driver scheduling while atomic: dbus-daemon/1612/0x00090000
On my Mini 9 the symptom is a bit different: I first enabled the free driver which didn't work (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/502433). After a reboot, I tried to enable the STA driver, but the machine crashed while installing. A black screen was shown with the underline cursor blinking in the upper left corner, and a white hairpin mouse cursor remained on the screen. The touchpad and the keyboard didn't work any more, not even Alt-SysRq combinations (tried K, S, U, B). After power off and bootup the free wifi driver was still in use with the errors described in 502433. -- BUG: Dell Mini 9 wifi driver scheduling while atomic: dbus-daemon/1612/0x0009 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/466109 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 466109] Re: BUG: Dell Mini 9 wifi driver scheduling while atomic: dbus-daemon/1612/0x00090000
An addition to my previous comment: I got crash reports about the following failures, but it's not clear to me whether they were caused by attempting to install the STA driver or disable the free driver, which also failed. - failure to install dkms (missed the version) - bcmwl-kernel-source 5.10.91.9+bdcom-0ubuntu5 (package bcmwl-kernel-source (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: package bcmwl-kernel-source is already installed and configured) - fakeroot 1.12.4ubuntu1 (package fakeroot 1.12.4ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: package fakeroot is already installed and configured) Apport refused to send the report about dkms since the report was broken. It would have sent the report about bcmwl-kernel-source and fakeroot but I cancelled them. -- BUG: Dell Mini 9 wifi driver scheduling while atomic: dbus-daemon/1612/0x0009 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/466109 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 507813] [NEW] Xorg crash on an idle netbook (Intel video): [mi] EQ overflowing
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I had left my Dell Mini 9 open and switched on, and when I returned to it several hours later: - the mouse moved - no response to clicks - no response to typing - screen ok, no corruption - no Caps Lock blinking - no suspend/resume done after last power-up - I had Firefox, emacs-snapshot and the Gnome Terminal open. I killed X with Alt-SysRq-K. The log for the crashed session is in Xorg.0.log.old. I have connected a 1280x1024 LCD panel to the VGA connector and my desktop is extended there. I have disabled desktop effects. This is the first time I see this lock-up although I've left the netbook idle for several times during the two weeks I've been using Lucid. It seems that libdrm-intel and xorg (but not xserver-org-video-intel) got updated three days ago. I can't think of any other recent significant changes to the system. I have gnome-do running. The screensaver is set to empty screen in 5 minutes. [Bug 507813] Re: [i945gme] Xorg crash on an idle netbook (Intel video): [mi] EQ overflowing
Just happened again on the same netbook I originally reported about. I left it idle for about 50 minutes. When I returned, I launched two short scripts with Gnome-Do and then tried to interact with Google Calendar which was open on the screen. Same symptoms: mouse does move the cursor, but clicks and keypresses don't work. What can I do to help? Try another kernel? Xorg-edgers? Enable some debugging? This is still an issue with Lucid upgraded up-to-date on 2010-01-17. Cold booting or even removing the battery before power-up doesn't help at all. I also tried activating the Broadcom STA driver instead, but it just drops into a blank console and hard freezes before succeeding with the activation. [Bug 508741] [NEW] maximus usability suffers when external display is connected
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: maximus When I connect an external 1280x1024 LCD panel to my netbook, the window manager works in an unintuitive way: The desktop is extended to the external display as expected. If I move the mouse cursor to the external display after clicking on an application which is maximized on startup (e.g. Firefox on my system), the application launches maximized on the external display, but the window title is still on the netbook display. Netbook-launcher is also dimmed. If I click on the netbook display to interact with netbook-launcher, all applications on the external displays are hidden. I would expect applications windows to stay open and non-dimmed on one display when others are focused on the other. This is Lucid Netbook Edition installed from Alpha 1, up-to-date as of 2010-01-17, with maximus 0.4.14-0ubuntu3 and netbook-launcher 2.1.12-0ubuntu4. ** Affects: maximus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- maximus usability suffers when external display is connected https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/508741 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 245219] Re: Ubuntu archive server returning incorrect content-encoding
Teej, as M. Vefa pointed out, the problem is not in the distribution but on the Ubuntu HTTP servers. The Content-Encoding header mentioned by Bob Drzyzgula in the original report seems to be gone now. However, Content-Type is now application/x-gzip which is incorrect for a PGP signature. I haven't tested upgrading through a proxy recently, but it's still possible that this header could break that. It looks like mod_mime matches extensions in the middle of a file name if the final extension is unknown. This explains why for files with a .tar.gz.gpg extension, the Ubuntu servers used to indicate a gzip encoding and a tar content type, and why they now return a gzip content type. Here is what the Ubuntu servers currently reply: $ wget -q --no-cache --save-headers http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy-proposed/main/dist-upgrader-all/0.87.31/hardy.tar.gz.gpg $ cat hardy.tar.gz.gpg HTTP/1.1 200 OK Date: Sun, 17 Jan 2010 13:00:31 GMT Server: Apache/2.2.8 (Ubuntu) Last-Modified: Thu, 29 Jan 2009 15:38:41 GMT ETag: "bd-461a0e1fda240" Accept-Ranges: bytes Content-Length: 189 Keep-Alive: timeout=15, max=100 Connection: Keep-Alive Content-Type: application/x-gzip -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQBJgc2BQJdur0N9BbURAnhDAJwNh53DLg9jF8c3+dcjTKM+CnpK6gCggG9e 2Fi2CguhyGmEktTiVEQT4Hk= =5Ug/ -END PGP SIGNATURE- $ wget -q --no-cache --save-headers http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid/main/dist-upgrader-all/0.131.3/lucid.tar.gz.gpg akaih...@morris:/tmp$ cat lucid.tar.gz.gpg HTTP/1.1 200 OK Date: Sun, 17 Jan 2010 13:04:35 GMT Server: Apache/2.2.8 (Ubuntu) Last-Modified: Tue, 12 Jan 2010 19:27:03 GMT ETag: "bd-47cfca3780fc0" Accept-Ranges: bytes Content-Length: 189 Keep-Alive: timeout=15, max=100 Connection: Keep-Alive Content-Type: application/x-gzip -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQBLTM0HQJdur0N9BbURAgoQAJ9jwi/0EBi+Hd5VWivJ90SYhRFwsQCggxR/ Y2Z4yunLdiqmR9x2DrOUxM4= =tv7O -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- Ubuntu archive server returning incorrect content-encoding https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/245219 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 245219] Re: Ubuntu archive server returning incorrect content-encoding
I think this should be added to Apache's /etc/apache2/mods-available/mime.conf: AddType application/pgp-signature .gpg I tried this on my Debian Squeeze -based server and sure enough, .tar.gz.gpg files are now served with the application/pgp-signature content type. This needs to be tested though by creating an Ubuntu repository mirror and upgrading from it through a proxy. On the other hand, maybe a wrong Content-Type doesn't matter and the removal of the Content-Encoding header already fixed the issue. -- Ubuntu archive server returning incorrect content-encoding https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/245219 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 116507] Re: When moving, item disappears temporarily
In Lucid with alacarte 0.12.4-1ubuntu, a menu item still disappears for almost 2 seconds when dragging it to the same or a different folder. Also, dragging and dropping doesn't move the item but makes a copy (even when dropping to the same folder). When dropping to the same folder, this makes it look like the item was deleted, and after 2 seconds the user is surprised with two copies of the item. When dropping to another folder, the item disappears and the source folder is shown for 2 seconds. This feels like the user could continue working with that folder. Suddenly the destination folder is shown and the item is there. It's surprising that a copy of the item is has now re-appeared in the source folder as well.
