[Bug 274424] Re: Intel HD Audio 82801I ICH9 sound repeats / echoes / skips / stutters

2009-08-08 Thread anakin
I have an HP dv3-2155mx and am having no sound in Ubuntu 9.04. So far
all the suggestions I've tried have not worked for me. I can't even get
the sound to skip/echo/repeat. I changed the playback and tested all
available options in the System-> Preferences-> Sound. I installed
PulseAudio Volume controller and verified the graphic meters were moving
when the sound was playing from Totem Movie Player. There are no start
up and shutdown sounds. I've read on some forums that the kernel needs
to be recompiled with certain options switched on (irqpoll?) but says
the side effects of irqpoll is that other devices are "delayed" (touch
pad, etc). Any help would be appreciated!

[Bug 274424] Re: Intel HD Audio 82801I ICH9 sound repeats / echoes / skips / stutters

2009-08-08 Thread anakin
Confirmed Fedora 10 Live CD sound worked (WIFI card is not working; did
not work in ubuntu 9.04 live CD either but works in Ubuntu 9.04
installed). Sound echos/repeats when exiting totem movie player. No
"/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf" found. "/etc/modprobe.conf" is empty.
I would like to find out the settings that are being used in the alsa
configuration file and then try to use that in Ubuntu 9.04. "alsamixer"
brings up:

Card: PulseAudio
Chip: PulseAudio

In Ubuntu 9.04 the card was HDA Intel (Alsa Mixer).

*

Kernel used in Fedora 10 Live CD that I'm using is 2.6.27.5-117; I
dunno if using this kernel in Ubuntu will make any difference I don't
know what options are turned on in this kernel.

[Bug 274424] Re: Intel HD Audio 82801I ICH9 sound repeats / echoes / skips / stutters

2009-08-09 Thread anakin
UPDATE: WORKS THROUGH MY HEADPHONES WITHOUT ECHOS/REPEATS/ETC (I don't
know how to make it come through the speakers. Is there a setting
somewhere to make it output the speakers?)

I reinstalled Ubuntu 9.04 and performed all the updates the Ubuntu's
update manager suggested (I noticed some pulse audio updates; there were
a lot of updates so there may have been other sound related items
updated as well). Also I don't know if it matters but I installed Pulse
Volume Controller, VLC, and Wine. I performed the following:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

# then I added the following lines at the end of the file and REBOOTED!
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

I'm not sure if the model is important... I have an hp-dv3 so I'm going to
substitute that for the model and see if the sound works. If you have the same
dv3-2155mx (dunno if its the same for other HPs) the speaker icon on the
keyboard is WHITE (as oppose to orange like it was before) by the time the
login screen came up. If its Orange I dunno if it'll work... my wifi never
worked when it was orange during the live CDs.

If you know how to change the output to the speakers please post a reply
or email me at spamtaker666(at)yahoo.com. Thank you very much and I'll
post more of my results asap.

[Bug 274424] Re: Intel HD Audio 82801I ICH9 sound repeats / echoes / skips / stutters

2009-08-09 Thread anakin
UPDATE:

Changing the model to hp-dv3 did not work. I changed it back to hp-dv5
and rebooted and everything worked fine through the headphones. Using
the volume applet (default in Ubuntu? Not the pulse volume control) I
clicked on Volume Control->Preferences and check EVERYTHING on.
Although the headphones work I wanted to get the sound through the
speakers to work too. So after everything is checked close the
preference dialog box and return to the volume control dialog. Click on
the RECORDING tab and and unmute "Import0 Mux" and "Import1 Mux" (I
think one is for the left speaker and the other one is for the right
speaker because if I just unmute one the sound is stronger on one
side). I wouldn't recommend changing these values for the these two
options as if you click back to the "Playback" tab the volume can be
controlled through "Front Speakers" and of course "Master." On accident
I change one of the values and then went to the terminal typed
"alsamixer" and hit tab to get to the capture screen. There you can see
the numeric value for all the values and can make sure Import0 Mux and
Import1 Mux are the same.

Also I should mention the settings in System->Preferences->Sound; I set
everything to PulseAudio Sound Server (except for Default Mixer Tracks
which is set to HDA Intel (alsa mixer)). Alsa and OSS also worked for
the other options but I chose to keep it at PulseAudio Sound Server.

I hope this helps!

[Bug 1362758] [NEW] Manual partitioning does not allow multiple LV created in VG

2014-08-28 Thread Anakin
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS
Release:14.04

ubiquity:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 2.18.8.1
  Version table:
 2.18.8.1 0
500 http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty-updates/main amd64
Packages
 2.18.7 0
500 http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/main amd64 Packages

All details found in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2241507

This is not a technical bug per se, but not being able to create
multiple Logical Volumes in a Volume Group is a bit of a short-coming?
If this was submitted wrongly, please guide me to the right location.

What I expected was to be able to create multiple LVs in a VG (as I had
done so before on RH-based installs)

NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda8:00 167,7G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:10 512M 0 part /boot/efi
├─sda2 8:20 244M 0 part /boot
└─sda3 8:30 167G 0 part
  └─sda3_crypt (dm-0)252:00 167G 0 crypt
├─xubuntu--vg-root (dm-1)252:1020G 0 lvm /
├─xubuntu--vg-swap_1 (dm-2) 252:20 7,9G 0 lvm [SWAP]
├─xubuntu--vg-home (dm-3)252:3015G 0 lvm /home
└─xubuntu--vg-virtual (dm-4) 252:40 124,1G 0 lvm /virtual

What happened instead:

-- When I use automatic partitioning (with encryption and LVM tagged) it makes
1 VG and creates 1 big filesystem / and 1 for swap. Makes sense, I merely used
this just to show that it does in fact work.
-- When I manually partition in the installer, I cannot create multiple LV's in
a single VG. Each filesystem needs to be on its own Physical Volume. After
reboot this resulted in having to enter the same encryption password (can only
set it once) multiple times.
-- When I manually partition in the installer without LVM, all filesystems on
separate encrypted partitions, it fails at creating/mounting the XFS
filesystem. This is possibly/most likely a separate bug which I'll investigate
on a different (virtual) machine.
-- When I manually partition using parted, then assign filesystem/mount-point
in the installer WITHOUT encryption, it works fine. Makes sense, I merely used
this just to show that it does in fact work.
-- When I manually partition using parted, then assign filesystem/mount-point
in the installer WITH encryption, it fails to copy the dm-crypt.ko into the
bootloader (the file is physically not present in /boot/lib), does not create
/etc/crypttab, Hooks are not present (no idea on that) and grub is not updated
with proper "root=" setting. At boot init fails because crypt-device (in all
cases /dev/sda3) cannot be found, dumps me to the prompt, where the command
cryptsetup is not found.

Worked around it by using the automatic partitioning (so all the libs
and configs are present) and alter the setup from LiveCD after
completion.

I do not have installer-logs available. If needed I could reproduce in a
VM fairly easily.

[Bug 1215379] Re: zswap is not enabled

2013-08-25 Thread AnAkIn
I would like this as well.
According to phoronix, "With the Kconfig ZSWAP support for Zswap enabled, it's
just a matter of setting zswap.enabled=1 as a kernel module parameter.", so I
guess Eugene is correct, it won't be enabled by default. We still need
CONFIG_ZSWAP to be able to enable it though.

I use Indirect rendering...but that was not the cause.
I have found something else. I used nvidia hack with nvidia-settings to improve
2D performance (from nvnews forum). I remove this, and now, there's no more
redraw problem.
The hack was to put in ~/.gnomerc the line : nvidia-settings -a
InitialPixmapPlacement=1 -a GlyphCache=1
I think it's better to use defaults settings from nvidia not to have these
redraw issues ;)

This problem comes from FLGRX proprietary driver from AMD/ATI. Please complain

There's no such thing with opensource driver radeonhd (though there are other
issues ...)
According to this post :
http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13671&highlight=switch+user
[...]
However, this issue has been mentioned repeatedly over the last 6 months (at
least), and the ATI devs response was along the lines of "switch user? who uses
that?", so don't hold your breath waiting for a fix because they don't really
seem to care.

[Bug 223776] Re: print dialog hangs when connected to wireless network

2009-08-20 Thread Anakin Starkiller
Still nothing on this bug ? I think it should be renamed to something
that doesn't contain wifi. In fact, this is just an issue of how to
handle the situation when IPP server are not reachable...instead of
hanging, a message should appear...It doesn't seem too complicated, and
the problem doesn't not come from network-manager or cups, it is gnome
print dialog that is somehow flawed ;)

2009-07-28 Thread Anakin Starkiller
Besides, the above script doesnt work for me :

Here is the output :

Found device /devices/pci:00/:00:1a.7/usb1/1-1 associated to /dev/sdb;
USB bus id is 1-1
Syncing device /dev/sdb
Stopping device /dev/sdb
Unbinding device 1-1
Checking whether /devices/pci:00/:00:1a.7/usb1/1-1 can be suspended
Suspending /devices/pci:00/:00:1a.7/usb1/1-1 by writing to
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1a.7/usb1/1-1/power/level

But still no spinning down...

[Bug 213149] Re: pulseaudio breaks on switching from tty7 to tty [1-6] (in and out of Gnome)

2008-05-06 Thread Anakin Starkiller
I've found one solution. Open PolicyKit. And let the main user access sound
device (in hal section).
Now, switching between tty works, but restarting X server still cause
pulseaudio to stop...

[Bug 213149] Re: pulseaudio breaks on switching from tty7 to tty [1-6] (in and out of Gnome)

2008-05-06 Thread Anakin Starkiller
For Peter Garrett :
I've found at last the solution for using pulseaudio even if X is down.
Well, everything was actually explained in the /etc/default/pulseaudio file :

-
# Start the PulseAudio sound server in system mode.

# (enables the pulseaudio init script)

# System mode is not the recommended way to run PulseAudio as it has some

# limitations (such as no shared memory access) and could potentially allow

# users to disconnect or redirect each others audio streams. The

# recommend way to run PulseAudio is as a per-session daemon. For GNOME

# sessions you can install pulseaudio-esound-compat and GNOME will

# automatically start PulseAudio on login (if ESD is enabled in

# System->Preferences->Sound). For other sessions, you can simply start

# PulseAudio with "pulseaudio --daemonize".

# 0 = don't start, 1 = start

PULSEAUDIO_SYSTEM_START=0

# Prevent users from dynamically loading modules into the PulseAudio sound

# server. Dynamic module loading enhances the flexibilty of the PulseAudio

# system, but may pose a security risk.

# 0 = no, 1 = yes

DISALLOW_MODULE_LOADING=1
---

You have to make PulseAudio act as a Daemon instead as an esd instance of
gnome-session.
So change PULSEAUDIO_SYSTEM_START=0 to PULSEAUDIO_SYSTEM_START=1
Everything works fine now ;)
