[Bug 220013] Re: [hardy] Kernel panic with Zydas wifi and kernel 2.6.24

2008-08-24 Thread Alwin Garside
This bug also affects me on 2.6.24-19-generic with my usb 0ACE:1215
ZyDAS WLA-54L WiFi. However, it only occurs when I'm using network-
manager. When I just apt-get remove network-manager and configure my
wireless connection manually (with dhcp) in /etc/networking/interface my
computer won't crash. (Fortunatly I don't roam arround with this box.)

However, from time to time my USB WiFi somehow disconnects or resets (I
mean the USB part, not the WiFi part). This is where with Network
Manager installed my computer would usually crash. In dmesg it shows up
like this:

[33077.260001] hub 2-0:1.0: port 1 disabled by hub (EMI?), re-enabling...
[33077.260020] usb 2-1: USB disconnect, address 2
[33077.270924] zd1211rw 2-1:1.0: error ioread32(CR_REG1): -22
[33077.434633] usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
[33077.602972] usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[33077.722273] usb 2-1: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
[33077.905861] zd1211rw 2-1:1.0: eth1
[33086.671105] hub 2-0:1.0: port 1 disabled by hub (EMI?), re-enabling...
[33086.671123] usb 2-1: USB disconnect, address 3
[33086.810886] usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
[33086.978990] usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[33087.154498] usb 2-1: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
[33087.312838] zd1211rw 2-1:1.0: eth1

Whenever this happens, my WiFi connection goes down, but I just restart
the networking services and everything works fine. So there might be
some problem in network-manager too?

Has anyone else here tried uninstalling network-manager and configuring
their devices manually?

I will reinstall network-manager now and see if I can get some sort of
log output that can help pinpointing this problem.

[Bug 173652] Re: unable to adjust screen brightness on recent Sony Vaio notebooks

2008-08-28 Thread Alwin Garside
I have a VAIO VGN-NR230AE and both on Hardy and Intrepid only
rc.local/xrandr + manual xbacklight works.

Also on Hardy the functions keys don't even produce any ACPI events
according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HotkeyResearch
(see bug #251665), I haven't tested this on Intrepid yet, though.

** Description changed:

I have a Sony VAIO VGN-NR230AE. It's a Brazilian VAIO model, not sure

- Right from the start after installing Ubuntu 8.04 I noticed that *only*

+ volume up, volume down, mute, Pause, Break and Scroll Lock Fn-keys work.
+ None of the others (Brightness Up, Brightness Down, switch video output,

- After some searching around I found bug #176888 and bug #173652. After

[Bug 123064] Re: Upgrade to Eclipse 3.4.1

2008-11-24 Thread Alwin Garside
Actually, when using the dropins directory to install plug-ins manually
in a system-wide installation (let's say, you have Eclipse 3.4.1
installed in /usr/lib/eclipse with root permissions, and install jdt and
pde in the dropins dir also with root permissions) then afaik those
plug-ins installed there can co-exist peacefully with upgrade versions
of plug-ins that are installed in .eclipse through the P2 Update
Manager.

So, if you'd have eclipse-platform, jdt en pde installed from the repo,
suposing jdt and pde are installed as dropins, then you can update those
plugins through the Update Manager without any problem. The updated
.jars are just placed in .eclipse. So no problems there.

true "human beings" could also just opt to stick to 8.10 or choose the 8.04
LTS release. "Human Beings" should read release notes. And the advantage of
fixed 6 month schedules is that you can easily fall back to an earlier
release...

The XXA and EXA code has been deleted from the git master tree, so for
any drivers above the 2.7 branch, setting AccelMethod do not change
anything. Xorg-edgers is the latest development version after all.

[Bug 123064] Re: Upgrade to Eclipse 3.4.2

2009-04-17 Thread Alwin Garside
@Sergiy Zuban:
No there are no technical limitations to having mixed system-wide eclipse
updated through apt and local plugins installed through Eclipse's Update
Manager.

I have done lots of test with the packages in my PPA and in all cases
things just work perfectly. The approach I took was to use Eclipse 3.4's
dropins folder to install eclipse plugins system-wide in .debs.

2009-04-27 Thread Alwin Garside
Kevin, please test in EXA mode. On the [8086:2a02] (rev 0c) setting
AccelMethod to "UXA" acually fixes things, at the cost of a 25%
performance penalty.
Like Martin said, you should ideally test from a LiveCD or a fresh
untouched install. If you can't be bothered to reinstall Ubuntu or run
a LiveCD, at least test in EXA mode with Greedy Migration disabled.

No, I'm using a fresh Ubuntu install with my [8086:2a02] (rev 0c)

when I set AccelMethod to "UXA" everything runs fine.

2009-04-28 Thread Alwin Garside
Okay ladies and gentleman, I believe that, at least for [8086:2a02]
(rev 0c), increasing Virtual works as a workaround.

I've been using a fresh ubuntu installation, with no changes to
xorg.conf except Virtual 2560 1024, for the whole day now, with Compiz
enabled and no freezes.

Please try increasing the Virtual size to something high like 2560 x
1024, on a fresh installation where possible, and post your findings
here.

Well, UXA *is* experimental, so dont be suprised if UXA freezes on you...
EXA + Virtual 2048 2048 _does_ seem to be the magic solution. Just
take a look at my Freeze-free xorg.conf:

Section "Monitor"

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
SubSection "Display"
Virtual 2560 1024
EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

You see? No exotic settings, just a high Virtual...

[Bug 251665] [NEW] Fn keys on VAIO VGN-NR230 don't produce ACPI events

2008-07-24 Thread Alwin Garside
Public bug reported:

I have a Sony VAIO VGN-NR230AE. It's a Brazilian VAIO model, not sure
whether it's available in America but in Brazil it's _very_ popular.
Right from the start after installing Ubuntu 8.04 I noticed that *only*
the volume and Scroll Lock Fn-keys work. None of the others does
anything.

After some searching around I found bug #176888 and bug #173652. After
following the instructions in those bug reports I do manage to change
the brightness levels using xbacklight... But the Fn keys still don't
work.

So after going through
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HotkeyResearch I finally
discovered that in fact my Fn keys aren't producing any ACPI events or
magic numbers, using any of the methods described there.

Olivier, try this command from your gnome/kde terminal:

you're probably now dealing with bug #176888.

[Bug 243949] Re: [KDE4][Display] Fails to set anything but clone mode

2008-10-06 Thread Alwin Garside
Did you allready try the Intrepid Beta? Big chance it's fixed there.

Also, in Ubuntu 8.04.1, try adding the following to the "Screen" section
of /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

SubSection "Display"
Virtual 2560 2048
EndSubSection

Your screen section will end up like this:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
SubSection "Display"
Virtual 2560 1824
EndSubSection
EndSection

If that works, than it's because in 8.04 the XrandR's virtual screen
size isn't changed dynamically. AFAIK this is fixed in Intrepid.
(Haven't tested this though.)

[Bug 9068] Re: Serial mice are not autodetected

I think Tom Arnold's idea would do the trick.
And as Renaud OLGIATI said it's probably also a good idea to take a look how
other distro's solve the problem.

We don't need to query the Serial Port to know _exactly_ what kind of
Serial Mouse we're using. If we could at least discover that the user is
using *any* serial mouse that will solve 99% of the cases.

fwiw, in my PPA I have packages for Eclipse and a bunch of plugins that I built
using the release binaries from Eclipse.org:
https://launchpad.net/~yogarine/+archive

Obviously these packages aren't suitable for inclusion in the Ubuntu
repos, but they are stable and usable for everyone that just wants
something that gets the job done in the meantime.

Also, afaik the plugins in my ppa (like eclipse-pdt, etc) should all
play nicely with pkt's packages. Haven't tested this though, but they
use the dropins folder in /usr/lib/eclipse/dropins.

Re: [Bug 123064] Re: Upgrade to Eclipse 3.4.2

2009-04-17 Thread Alwin Garside
I made my own packages of Eclipse and a bunch of plugins using the
release tarballs from eclipse.org:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~yogarine/+archive/ppa

I did this because from my experience installing Eclipse and then
installing all the plugins you want is always a big hassle that can
take up a whole hour. Why go to all that trouble if you can just type:

sudo apt-get install eclipse-pdt

Just give my ppa a try and I'm sure you'll like the idea.

[Bug 51592] No system tray icon

2006-07-02 Thread Alwin Garside
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 42269 ***

Public bug reported:

I simply don't get a system tray icon.

When I use the official version from azureus.sourceforge.net the system
tray shows up normally.

I reproduced the problem on two different PC's. (Only in Gnome though,
not in KDE)

It also doesn't matter whether you use GIJ or Sun Java.

[Bug 33158] Re: Trying to edit any preferences causes crash

2006-07-02 Thread Alwin Garside
Same problem here on i386. This bug should be marked confirmed.

The warning "** (zapping:5725): WARNING **: GConf key
'/apps/zapping/plugins/deinterlace/method' is unset and has no default.
Schemas incomplete or not installed?" has nothing to do with it though.
Setting that gconf key by hand makes the warning disappear but the
program still will crash.

With me, it only crashes when trying to enter the Preferences or

[Bug 88746] Re: ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices

2007-10-30 Thread Alwin Garside
** Summary changed:

- USB devices are not recognized when having ehci_hcd modprobed
+ ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices

** Description changed:

- Certain USB devices do not work while the ehci_hcd module is loaded.
+ Certain USB devices do not work properly, or do not work at all, while
+ the ehci_hcd module is loaded.

A solution is to unload the ehci_hcd module, which is loaded every time the
computer starts, using the command 'sudo modprobe -r ehci_hcd'. This works fine
but unfortunatly ehci-hcd is necessary for using USB 2.0, so you lose USB 2.0
features.
Another solution is to disable USB 2.0 through the BIOS setup.

+ With some devices it is possible to read files normally (ie. copy files
+ from an USB pendrive to the computer), but the device disconnects
+ abrubtly when you start writing data on the device. In some devices it
+ fails after writing a certain amount of data, probably the size of the
+ write cache.
+
  Steps to reproduce:
- 1. Insert your USB device (like a flash drive)
- 2. Comfirm with the 'dmesg' command that it isn't functioning properly. (I/O
errors etc)
- 3. Remove the USB device
- 4. Unload ehci_hcd with 'sudo modprobe -r ehci_hcd'
- 5. Insert your USB device again.
- 6. Check that everything works. (copy some files, etc.)
+ 1. Insert your USB 2.0 device (like a flash drive)
+ 2. If the device is recognised and mounted properly try copying a file to it.
+ 3. Comfirm with the 'dmesg' command that it isn't functioning properly. (I/O
errors etc)
+ 4. Remove the USB device
+ 5. Unload ehci_hcd with 'sudo modprobe -r ehci_hcd'
+ 6. Insert your USB device again.
+ 7. Check that everything works. (copy some files, etc.)

[Bug 88746] Re: ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices

2007-10-30 Thread Alwin Garside
Problem still persists for me in Gutsy. I connect my PSP and all seems
well, I can even copy stuff from my PSP to the computer with 2.0 speed
without any problem.

But when I try to copy a file to the PSP it starts to give I/O errors.
Either while copying (in case of a large file) or while unmounting (if I
copied a small file, and it was still in the write cache).

I attached my dmesg output:
[ 4302.993322] is the point where I started copying from the PC to my PSP.

[Bug 88746] Re: ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices

2008-01-30 Thread Alwin Garside
I just want to remind people that:

1.) For many people the autosuspend fix doesn't resolve this bug (for me it
didn't)
2.) This bug may also be caused by low quality cables. For example, a low
quality 1.1 cable will give I/O errors when connecting a USB 2.0 device with it.

Actually, I think that quite a lot of cases of this bug are caused by low
quality cables and/or wiring.
So if you notice that you experience this problem in both Windows and Linux,
please check if your USB cables are _real_ USB 2.0 cables. Also, if you're
using the cases front plugs, try the plugs in the back. Chance is the wiring
inside your PC case is of low quality.

So a fallback to uhci_hcd would resolve point 2, and temporarily fix 1
while it still isn't solved. Fixing this bug _soon_ is more important
than fixing it _ the proper way_. Most Normal People care more about the
fact that their device works than transfer speed.
