[Bug 231384] Re: Firefox is extremely slow to respond; starts in about 4 min, gtk-damaged?
hi alexander i don't know about the other guys, speaking for myself though the behavior was not only limited to firefox. it was simply the first application that was affected by it. I use kubuntu so i don't run many gtk applications yet the ones i do use seemed to show the same behavior. as previously mentioned, evince and firestarter were affected. this does support your hypothesis of a buggy helper application. thank you for your continuing help :-) ANDREA -- Firefox is extremely slow to respond; starts in about 4 min, gtk-damaged? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/231384 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

i'd like to add though that no one so far has managed to find out what caused the issue and i still don't know it myself; that's why i filed a bug against firefox though it might not be the real cause, as you pointed out. -- Firefox is extremely slow to respond; starts in about 4 min, gtk-damaged? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/231384 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

hi ayan no solution available so far, sorry. we're still trying to get to the bottom of this ... if you like to help though there's still the open question whether it affects all gtk+ applications ... alexander: i'm looking into that. what I can tell you is that it affects firestarter, evince and firefox, which would point to gtk-applications but not others. to answer alexander's request i tested a few applications: avidemuxok bluefish18:22 - 18:27 (clearly affected) firestarter 18:22 - 18:27 (clearly affected) thoggen ok ekiga 18:22 k9copy ok kaffeineok brasero 18:22 - 18:27 (clearly affected) vlc ok openoffice ok evince 18:24 - 18:29 (clearly affected) the time right after the application indicates the time at which the applications was launched and when it appeared, for instance at 6:22 pm bluefish was launched but didn't show up until 6:27 etc. ekiga didn't even bother to show up it simply created a "tray icon" that was blank. -- Firefox is extremely slow to respond; starts in about 4 min, gtk-damaged? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/231384 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 277431] [NEW] [Intrepid] Distribution Upgrade gets stuck on libapache2-mod-php5
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: update-manager Hi Yesterday/today I tried to upgrade to Intrepid using the distrubution-upgrader. Well comparing to previous upgrades it worked very well up - up to the point where libapache3-mod-php5 tried to install. For some reason it simply got stuck, apparently it's because it tried to present a dialog that never showed up. I then killed the background process associated with it and of course other upgrades failed thereafter. I've run sudo dpkg --configure -a now so that should fix it. Another application - virtualbox - asked me right in the console if I wanted to upgrade it. I think not everybody would check the console as a lot of people - such as myself - walk away during the upgrade. A possible improvement might be to skip certain upgrades that require user attention until the very end ... and then ask them together (or make a check beforehand) That way you can actually make an almost unattended upgrade :-) Ok here's the promised console output: Setting up php5-common (5.2.6-2ubuntu3) ... Installing new version of config file /etc/cron.d/php5 ... Setting up libapache2-mod-php5 (5.2.6-2ubuntu3) ... debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Kde debconf: (--- No method to call for :) debconf: falling back to frontend: Dialog debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Dialog debconf: (Dialog frontend will not work on a dumb terminal, an emacs shell buffer, or without a controlling terminal.) debconf: falling back to frontend: Readline Modified configuration file --- looking forward to your responses and as usual if there are any questions don't hesitate to ask! [Bug 231384] Re: Firefox is extremely slow to respond; starts in about 4 min, gtk-damaged?
Hi BotLobsta Thank you for contributing. How did you install intrepid? Did you use an iso, a clean hardy install or a customized hardy install? do you have any of the following packages installed: avidemux, kdenlive, kino, open movie editor, and pitivi According to Alan Szlosek, these might cause interference. In my personal experience, this is not the cause. I have two identical installations on the very same harddisk, one with a lagging firefox and the other one as quick and intrepid as an ibex ;-) (i know they're the same as i installed the second one using dselect ... with an dpkg --get- selections from the first install) if you have any other pointers (such as additional programs installed) I'd really appreciate your input! I've also noticed that "gnome applications" (such as evince, gedit, firestarter) seem to lag incredibly in performance. looking forward to your feedback and thank you for contributing! [Bug 259368] [NEW] Kubuntu's "Restart Required" Bubble doesn't work
Public bug reported: Since I screwed up my previous Intrepid Development VM I downloaded alpha 4 today and installed it. After installation of course it updated and I was confronted with the "restart required" bubble. Now first of all in my opinion it's supposed to say "restart required" and not "restart require" but aside from that, "yes" or "no" sounds like a game show - do you think a restart is required? I believe what it should say is something along the line of "In order to complete the update, your system needs to be restarted. Should the restart be carried out now?" / Would you like to restart now? Plus most importantly when I clicked "Yes" the bubble disappeared but that was it. No restart, nothing. Please make the options clearer and if my assumption (yes=restart) is correct well then there's a bug in the program [in which case I'll file another bug report] ANDREA ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Kubuntu's "Restart Required" Bubble doesn't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/259368 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 306131] Re: No Sound with VIA VT1708B on Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit
I was experiencing the same problem (no sound with VT1708B) and installed Jaunty and still didn't have sound. I have a M3N78-VM motherboard with video and audio on-board, a AMD Athalon 5050e, 8GB RAM. I installed Jaunty as an update to Ubuntu 8.10 (I don't know if that matters). And just to pass on my video driver no longer worked in Jaunty. I selected the Nvidia 177 packages with the package manager and it came back that I needed the nvidia-177-kernel ... source package which I couldn't get through the manager. Now the system is hung.
