[Bug 231384] Re: Firefox is extremely slow to respond; starts in about 4 min, gtk-damaged?

2008-06-30 Thread ANDREA
hi alexander
i don't know about the other guys, speaking for myself though the behavior was
not only limited to firefox. it was simply the first application that was
affected by it. I use kubuntu so i don't run many gtk applications yet the ones
i do use seemed to show the same behavior. as previously mentioned, evince and
firestarter were affected. this does support your hypothesis of a buggy helper
application.

thank you for your continuing help :-)

[Bug 231384] Re: Firefox is extremely slow to respond; starts in about 4 min, gtk-damaged?

2008-06-30 Thread ANDREA
i'd like to add though that no one so far has managed to find out what
caused the issue and i still don't know it myself; that's why i filed a
bug against firefox though it might not be the real cause, as you
pointed out.

[Bug 231384] Re: Firefox is extremely slow to respond; starts in about 4 min, gtk-damaged?

2008-07-02 Thread ANDREA
hi ayan
no solution available so far, sorry. we're still trying to get to the bottom of
this ... if you like to help though there's still the open question whether it
affects all gtk+ applications ...

alexander: i'm looking into that. what I can tell you is that it affects
firestarter, evince and firefox, which would point to gtk-applications
but not others.

[Bug 231384] Re: Firefox is extremely slow to respond; starts in about 4 min, gtk-damaged?

2008-07-02 Thread ANDREA
to answer alexander's request i tested a few applications:

avidemuxok
bluefish18:22 - 18:27 (clearly affected)
firestarter 18:22 - 18:27 (clearly affected)
thoggen ok
ekiga 18:22
k9copy ok
kaffeineok
brasero 18:22 - 18:27 (clearly affected)
vlc ok
openoffice ok
evince 18:24 - 18:29 (clearly affected)

the time right after the application indicates the time at which the
applications was launched and when it appeared, for instance at 6:22 pm
bluefish was launched but didn't show up until 6:27 etc. ekiga didn't
even bother to show up it simply created a "tray icon" that was blank.

2008-07-04 Thread ANDREA
thank you botlobsta for your time and your list! i'll try to find some
common aspects and get back to you i *think* i have an idea. about two
days ago i did a comparison (kdiff3) between /etc/ on a sane
installation and well the damaged one, there were lots of differences
(1033 i believe) but when i'm able to pin it to 2-3 components i think
i'd have a better chance of catching it :-) thanks again!

[Bug 231384] Re: Firefox is extremely slow to respond; starts in about 4 min, gtk-damaged?

2008-07-05 Thread ANDREA
congratulations everybody! I think we've found what caused the delay!
now well does anybody know the "cause of the cause" by which i mean what
disabled it in the first place? I for one didn't tamper with it so
"something" must have changed it. in that case, obviously, we'd need to
mark this as resolved and open a new bug against whatever package
disabled lo. any clues?

- Firefox is extremely slow to respond; starts in about 4 min, gtk-damaged?

[Bug 213097] Re: [Hardy - beta ]guidance-power-manager kde4

2008-07-25 Thread ANDREA
isn't this somewhat important for intrepid? I am currently using
kubuntu-kde4-desktop and the "battery monitor plasmoid" has at best very
basic funcionality. on top of that, it does not work with any shortcuts
(dimming, for instance) doesn't support hardware profiles (performance
vs battery mode) ... is this going to be added?

ok maybe a lot at once but just out of curiosity as i've switched to
kde4.1 in hardy :-)

[Bug 293059] Re: [i830] font drawing corruption regression ubuntu intrepid

2008-11-12 Thread Andrea
I was having the same problem on my Thinkpad X30, see attached
screenshot. It's obvious that it's not just the fonts that are affected
(see eg the progress bars in the system monitor in the top panel).

Setting the Option "AccelMethod" "XAA" as suggested in the initial bug
report seems to have solved the issue.

This is on xubuntu, updated from hardy which was updated from gutsy.

[Bug 206542] Re: by upgrading to hardy, ksplash-engine-moodin got removed

2008-12-04 Thread ANDREA
Daniel T Chen:

this is not reproducible in 8.10 or 9.04 afaik, no. but it still remains
as a problem in 8.04. even though kubuntu (!) 8.04 is not a LTS release
a lot of people will stick with it until they find kde4 usable (i know
quite a few of them) so it would still be a great idea to fix this one.
it's more than obvious that this is a bug so what do we need to do to
fix it?

[Bug 287370] Re: sound completely gone even though volume is at full

2009-05-07 Thread Andrea
I too have lost all sound in addition to my battery charge light being
non-existent, my screen saver hanging up, the Open org suite doing a
shutdown when trying to save a file, no bluetooth recognition though it
does show the connection as active, and unable to upgrade through the
Update manager saying that the repositories couldn't be found. Have
only installed the updates, no other outside software, no external disk
drives, speaker controls are not muted and turned all the way up. No
sound not even on startup or logoff. I hear your frustration! Oh wait,
no I can't because I don't have any sound!

2009-05-07 Thread Andrea
Okay, I think you will need to be a little more simplistic with me when
giving terminal commands since neither of the above worked either on
their own or with sudo in front of them.

Also, I am still running 8.04 as I cannot go any further in the update
process since it cannot locate the repositories.

nasty way which can't be good for it i'd love to get some feedback. I've

Any help is appreciated her - the bug definitely does exist, I could
post at least 50 other pictures (of instances) but they all look alike.

thinking maybe something gets loaded and once it's loaded the starting
process is smoother ... but what?

sorry this puzzles me a lot and i don't know what else todo - i'd
appreciate some help :-) thank you!

2008-06-03 Thread ANDREA
ok this is definitely caused by something loaded by firefox. i just
started firestarter with kdesu firestarter and it wouldn't load for like
5 min and then appeared. after that, firefox loaded very quickly (<10s)
with none of the problems previously described. that of course leads me
to the question which module/package/configuration file does firestarter
use that firefox also requires? all/any input is welcome!

should i have opened those as well?

i've tried adapting the computer to a different one that works (that is
same packages etc.) but still nothing. I've grown VERY tired of this so
i've formated the computer and set up the computer again using the very
same .kde folder (and home folder) but ditching most of the other
".folders" now firefox works - and firestarter does, too. i hope i was
the only one experiencing this problem.

what do you suggest? status=invalid or simply incomplete? i'd say for
the sake of closing this status=invalid :-)

[Bug 277431] [NEW] [Intrepid] Distribution Upgrade gets stuck on libapache2-mod-php5

2008-10-03 Thread ANDREA
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Hi
Yesterday/today I tried to upgrade to Intrepid using the distrubution-upgrader.
Well comparing to previous upgrades it worked very well up - up to the point
where libapache3-mod-php5 tried to install. For some reason it simply got
stuck, apparently it's because it tried to present a dialog that never showed
up. I then killed the background process associated with it and of course other
upgrades failed thereafter. I've run sudo dpkg --configure -a now so that
should fix it.

Another application - virtualbox - asked me right in the console if I
wanted to upgrade it. I think not everybody would check the console as a
lot of people - such as myself - walk away during the upgrade. A
possible improvement might be to skip certain upgrades that require user
attention until the very end ... and then ask them together (or make a
check beforehand) That way you can actually make an almost unattended
upgrade :-)

Ok here's the promised console output:

Setting up php5-common (5.2.6-2ubuntu3) ...
Installing new version of config file /etc/cron.d/php5 ...
Setting up libapache2-mod-php5 (5.2.6-2ubuntu3) ...

debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Dialog

buffer, or without a controlling terminal.)

looking forward to your responses and as usual if there are any
questions don't hesitate to ask!

I've upgraded to Intrepid this morning (/last night) and I'm now seeing a whole

[Bug 277468] [NEW] Intrepid doesn't start, screen shows ... cubistic kubuntu

2008-10-03 Thread ANDREA
Public bug reported:

hi
as previously written in about 3 other bug reports i've upgraded to intrepid

problem has come up: it refuses to boot altogether. i could live with no real
icons, printers that didn't work anymore and so on but if it doesn't start it's
really serious.

attached you find a neat picture of the cubistic screen if that helps at
all (otherwise i'll delete it even though it's decorative) and well any
help would be appreciated or i'm going to have to "downgrade" to a
working hardy system.

thanks in advance for fixing this and well telling me how the heck i can

i've noticed that deleting the whole .kde folder actually solves this

anyone has an idea what might have caused this i can try :-)

[Bug 272035] [NEW] update info: "incomplete language support" doesn't work on kubuntu

2008-09-19 Thread ANDREA
Public bug reported:

The new Update Information starts every single startup and informs me that
there are some incomplete language files. interestingly, there's nothing I can
do about that as
1) the "run this action now" button doesn't work
2) the instructions ("please use System -> Administration -> Language Support")
don't apply to Kubuntu but only to Ubuntu.

Maybe the text should be changed or the tool adapted or something. In
its current state it's only a bother and doesn't work (well for that
message it doesn't)...

If you need any further info such as about python configurations or so
just ask (if a special command should be needed please provide it as
well)

thank you

[Bug 231384] Re: Firefox is extremely slow to respond; starts in about 4 min, gtk-damaged?

2008-06-28 Thread ANDREA
Hi BotLobsta
Thank you for contributing. How did you install intrepid? Did you use an iso, a
clean hardy install or a customized hardy install? do you have any of the
following packages installed:

avidemux, kdenlive, kino, open movie editor, and pitivi

According to Alan Szlosek, these might cause interference. In my
personal experience, this is not the cause. I have two identical
installations on the very same harddisk, one with a lagging firefox and
the other one as quick and intrepid as an ibex ;-) (i know they're the
same as i installed the second one using dselect ... with an dpkg --get-
selections from the first install)

if you have any other pointers (such as additional programs installed)
I'd really appreciate your input! I've also noticed that "gnome
applications" (such as evince, gedit, firestarter) seem to lag
incredibly in performance.

looking forward to your feedback and thank you for contributing!

Firefox takes approx. 4-5 min to load and even when *finally* started it takes
another 4-5 min before the first url loads and in the meantime the windows
freezes.
maybe related to this is a gtk-bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk-qt-engine/+bug/220575
where i was asked to use the reporting tool in firefox (so this is the result).

if you need any further info on the problem i'd happily provide it.
thank you in advance for your time and your effort! big THANKS!

[Bug 232157] [NEW] Firefox Release Candidate not in Repositories

2008-05-20 Thread ANDREA
Public bug reported:

The Firefox 3 Release Candidate seems to be out since last week (end of
last week, to be precise) but it's not in the repositories yet. it
apparently fixes a lot of issues ubuntu users have experienced so it
might be a good idea to include it in the repositories ... could it be
added, please?

thank you for your replies in advance!

[Bug 220575] Re: checking radio buttons or checkboxes doesn't work correctly

2008-05-13 Thread ANDREA
Thank you for checking out this bug report, Alexander. Your
comment/contribution itself however is rather incomplete or would you
care to elaborate what about this bug report is incomplete? otherwise I
have to say that your comment is really pointless.

thank you for closer instructions in advance and most importantly for
your time!

ANDREA

ps: when you watch the screencast you'll see the problem. it's not an
isolated case by the way; when running from the live cd, install firefox
(sudo apt-get install firefox) and well navigate the web and you'll see
that all checkboxes are kind of "screwed up".

2008-05-13 Thread ANDREA
hi alexander
thanks for your reply. I have indeed tried different gnome themes. i did not
get what you mean by " engine change" though. in kcontrol (using kubuntu 8.04
with kde 3.5.9) i went to gtk styles and switched thru them. still no better...

i appreciate your help on this :-)

[Bug 259368] [NEW] Kubuntu's "Restart Required" Bubble doesn't work

2008-08-19 Thread ANDREA
Public bug reported:

Since I screwed up my previous Intrepid Development VM I downloaded
alpha 4 today and installed it. After installation of course it updated
and I was confronted with the "restart required" bubble.

Now first of all in my opinion it's supposed to say "restart required"
and not "restart require" but aside from that, "yes" or "no" sounds like
a game show - do you think a restart is required? I believe what it
should say is something along the line of "In order to complete the
update, your system needs to be restarted. Should the restart be carried
out now?" / Would you like to restart now?

Plus most importantly when I clicked "Yes" the bubble disappeared but
that was it. No restart, nothing.

Please make the options clearer and if my assumption (yes=restart) is
correct well then there's a bug in the program [in which case I'll file
another bug report]

2008-06-05 Thread ANDREA
i've restored the original (sda5) .mozilla folder to my ~/ but firefox
starts up very fast (on the new installation) --> not caused by

get what's in strace ... too much info :S

[Bug 306131] Re: No Sound with VIA VT1708B on Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit

2008-12-31 Thread andrea
I was experiencing the same problem (no sound with VT1708B) and installed
Jaunty and still didn't have sound. I have a M3N78-VM motherboard with video
and audio on-board, a AMD Athalon 5050e, 8GB RAM.
I installed Jaunty as an update to Ubuntu 8.10 (I don't know if that matters).

And just to pass on my video driver no longer worked in Jaunty. I
selected the Nvidia 177 packages with the package manager and it came
back that I needed the nvidia-177-kernel ... source package which I
couldn't get through the manager. Now the system is hung. I will
probably just reinstall a different OS because I would like to use 64
bit because I do have 8GB of RAM.

[Bug 220575] Re: [MASTER] checking radio buttons or checkboxes doesn't work correctly

2008-06-12 Thread ANDREA
by the way the performance issue part is documented here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/231384
as an independent bug just in case somebody else is experiencing similar
problems.

the qt-curve idea does work, seems suboptimal though ... maybe kubuntu-
desktop (or other package) should change dependency or something? it
really shouldn't be that everybody has to manually change this stuff :-)

[Bug 267131] [NEW] kde4 menu does not display crossover programs

2008-09-06 Thread ANDREA
Public bug reported:

Hi
I have installed crossover, and photoshop using it actually which works fine
and shows up correctly in the start menu using kde3. when using kde4 however in
a hardy install (kde 4.1.1 to be precise), there is no option to start
photoshop anymore nor is the crossover category displayed, which is unfortunate
if not annoying.
Help appreciated, if you need further info let me know!

ANDREA

ps: i've read somewhere that this has to do with kde4's menu not being
... xdg-compatible or something like that if that has ANYTHING to do
with it (don't quote me on this as i don't really know what it means)

[Bug 267131] Re: kde4 menu does not display crossover programs

2008-09-06 Thread ANDREA
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 263041 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/263041

If this were in fact a duplicate of 263041, photoshop would need to show
up in lost&found as described in that bug status. however, it doesn't.
It shows up nowhere. Neither does crossover ... maybe the cause is the
same, but the symptoms are not - that would mean that these two are
linked, but clearly this is not a duplicate.

[Bug 267912] [NEW] Kubuntu Alpha5 Page links to Alpha 1 Feedback

The following page

[Bug 412991] [NEW] Virtualbox 3.0 interferes with Dragon Player

2009-08-13 Thread ANDREA
Public bug reported:

I've installed Virtualbox 3 in Jaunty from Sun's page; I've since noticed that
when I start the interface the next movie I start in Dragon Player won't really
load; that is, the sound will be ok but the area where the movie should display
is totally transparent (which looks cool but is useless). I've done this a
couple of times now to verify that it is really virtualbox and all three times
right after opening the interface, the next movie loaded in dragon player
wouldn't display.
I've since downgraded to the officially supported version (virtualbox2) in
jaunty and the problem has disappeared.

As virtualbox 3 is going to make an appearance in karmic (afaik), I
think it is important that this bug be fixed.

Notes on my configuration: Kubuntu 9.04, KDE 4.3, Kernel
2.6.28-14-generic ... if you need more information please ask and I'll
be happy to provide it.

Thank you in advance and have a nice day!

[Bug 3339] Re: Ubuntu grub should be deluxe and animated like OpenSUSE grub

2009-06-11 Thread ANDREA
I am happy to see that this gets included (actually I saw it yesterday
in the newletter). I agree with will_in_wi, a "smooth" transition of the
different stages would be great. Even if we neglect the grub2 part, the
rest could still be more "in sync" :-) by the way this is definitely not
a killer feature as noone will switch from winblows or macosx to linux
because the startup is nice but it would still be great to have. i'm
very much looking forward to the implementation! (maybe there could be a
theme contest or so?)

[Bug 155862] Re: Firefox crashed very often

2007-10-22 Thread ANDREA
i can confirm this. i have noticed that it is very prone to crashing whenever
- i open a site that has LOADS of ads and thus ad-block has a lot to do (-->
Ad-Block related) or
- i am on youtube and change videos while they're still running

other than that i have not been able to narrow it down. both cases are
extremely annoying of course and even though they're third-party-related
i believe they should be fixable -after all, they weren't there in
feisty ... well thank you in advance to everybody helping out!
