hi alexander i don't know about the other guys, speaking for myself though the behavior was not only limited to firefox. it was simply the first application that was affected by it. I use kubuntu so i don't run many gtk applications yet the ones i do use seemed to show the same behavior. as previously mentioned, evince and firestarter were affected. this does support your hypothesis of a buggy helper application.
