Speaking only for myself, I don't see how waiting helps anything. I'm
+0 to you (or anyone else) doing the work and showing us a working
Maven build. I'm -0 to committing to a build system idea before I see
its implementation. It's just like most other issues or enhancement
requests: I'm always open to new ideas but I want to see the proof in
the pudding, so to speak.

And that's coming from someone who used Maven for his day job the past
couple of years, so is not a Maven opponent.

   Summary: maxPostSize does not work in standard http connector
implementation
   Product: Tomcat 6
   Version: 6.0.14
  Platform: PC
OS/Version: Windows XP
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P2
 Component: Connectors
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm using a standard http connector implementation. When I upload a file by
posting a form, the default 2 MB limit is not enforced. Even setting
maxPostSize="2097152" manually doesn't work. I can upload a 20 MB file and do
not get any errors, the file is completely uploaded. I also tested this in
Tomcat 5.5 in Windows and in Tomcat 6.0 in Linux with the same results. I do
not know if there is any other way to avoid getting a huge request. I can
disableUploadTimeout="false", but this may be bad for people with slow
connections and do not give me byte precision control. I can also check the
request size afterwards, but then time and space in the server have already
been wasted.

I don't think that's a problem, and I don't think it has to be hosted
in the Tomcat repository, at least not initially. You could host it
on your home page, on SourceForge / Google Code / any code repository,
on the Tomcat wiki, and in numerous other places. You can send
periodic emails to the mailing list(s) saying "here's my cool
whizbang, it's free, please use it and let me know." If others
express interest and start using it, great, we can talk again. If
not, hopefully you still find it useful for yourself and you hadn't
wasted much time on it.

The point is, feature X being integrated into Tomcat is not a
requirement for feature X to succeed, in my opinion. So we're
spending much more time on these emails and discussions that we
should. You think Maven would be awesome for Tomcat? Great, go
scratch your itch. No need to spend a week building consensus.

Commit access is not my decision, it's made by all the project
committers together. We typically look for a sustained contribution,
not a one-off enhancement or bug fix. See
http://www.apache.org/foundation/how-it-works.html#meritocracy for
more about how the ASF works in this regard.

Nice, but not amazing, and usually over-hyped.

Given that the reaction's been pretty negative from those that have
commit access[1] I wouldn't hold out much hope on this.

Re: [LOBBYING] Add nio connector to configuration validation

2007-10-19 Thread Costin Manolache
-0

The setProperty was done way before JMX, and it's quite hacky. I think
standardising on JMX-like model is better - i.e. if we make changes to
setProperty and connector configuration, it should bring it closer to JMX.

In JMX we have a "void setAttribute(...) throws AttributeNotFound", plus a
method to get supported attribute names.

So instead of returning the boolean - I think it would be better to add a
method to list supported attributes ( and with some changes to modeler this
could be reflected in the mbean - right now setProperty is ignored ). It's a
bit more complicated - but also more valuable.

If I commit to working on it, and try to show some sort of
proof-in-the-pudding, the issue returns to the problem I mentioned
before which is hosting it. I had originally mentioned the idea of
opening a branch for it. However, I don't have commit access to the
ASF repository, yet, and I felt too new to be asking for it. Since I
have made everyone aware that I would do the work, and the
overwhelming consensus seems to be "integrate-instead-of-migrate", I'm

Re: [LOBBYING] Add nio connector to configuration validation

2007-10-19 Thread Tim Funk

For java/org/apache/coyote/http11/Http11NioProtocol.java

Is it me or does this look odd after the patch (as well as before) ...
public void setProperty(String name, String value) {
setAttribute(name, value);
if (/*omitted for word wrap since it doesn't matter */) {
return ep.setProperty(name, value);
} else {
return ep.setProperty(name, value); /*commit omitted for ww*/
}
}

Should this be simplified too:
public void setProperty(String name, String value) {
setAttribute(name, value);
return ep.setProperty(name, value);
}

It'd be nice to get one more vote, so that we can get it in before the tag.

 From STATUS
* Make server.xml parsing warnings more generic, add support for the NIO
connector
* Connector is no longer an exception case. Any new component can still
use setProperty and return a boolean

* to accept or reject the property

Default is out of the question.

I'm going to keep waiting for more a few more +1s in the

In most cases, I agree. Unfortunately, I can make lengthy Maven poms, too.

I think it is safe to assume that Ant is pretty much no longer on the
table for being replaced anytime soon. As far as your issues with
packaging Maven in Gentoo, I wish you the best of luck. I think we're
still waiting for more +1 votes to see if it is worth the dev time.
Only time will tell. At this point I don't think I'm gonna hold my

[LOBBYING] Add nio connector to configuration validation

2007-10-19 Thread Filip Hanik - Dev Lists
Ok, sending a little email to lobby for a useful change. To the contrary
of comments and vetoes to this change, it doesn't change existing
behavior, it simplifies it, and also adds the NIO connector to the
validation of server.xml attributes.

It'd be nice to get one more vote, so that we can get it in before the tag.

From STATUS
* Make server.xml parsing warnings more generic, add support for the NIO
connector
* Connector is no longer an exception case. Any new component can still
use setProperty and return a boolean

* to accept or reject the property

All,

I would like to propose that we have reached the time where Tomcat
5.0.x should be archived. What this means in practice is:

- Sending an announcement out that no further work, including security
patches will be performed on 5.0.x. Current 5.0.x users are encouraged
to upgrade to 5.5.x or, ideally, 6.0.x
- Removing the 5.0.x docs from the web site
- Removing 5.0.x from the 5.5.x download pages (and hence the mirrors)
- Adding a note to the 5.5.x download pages that 5.0.x can be obtained
from the archives
- Moving the relevant tags and branches in svn to /tomcat/archive/
tc5.0.x

- Reviewing all 5.0.x bugs in bugzilla and closing them as WONTFIX or
changing the version to 5.5.x

Have I forgotten anything?

Re: Mavenization (M10N) of Tomcat Build Process - Should Tomcat Be Migrated to Maven 2?

2007-10-19 Thread Paul Shemansky
Bill,

The last thing that I want to be responsible for is introducing a
stumbling block for all of the Tomcat developers and users. This
thread should have also included "Maven 2 - Migrate, Integrate, or
Annihilate".

On 10/18/07, Bill Barker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
> I'm pretty much going to agree with Costin on this one. I have no objection

I agree, "replacement" is no longer an option at this point - perhaps
in the distant future.

> But most mavenized projects that I have see (e.g. apache-commons) seem to
> spend much more time on the pom then on the actual module code.

FYI - I love writing code, and honestly I don't like being tied to
build processes. :)
However, I feel that Maven 2 is finally coming to fruition and believe
it would be nice to incorporate it.

> And most of the look-feel of mavenized project's websites frankly s*ck.

I agree, but most of those sites do not even attempt to add style to
the default generated site. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder (and
is in the hands of the CSS writer). If desired, the generated Maven
site wouldn't even have to replace the current site, but could serve
as an addition to the current site.

> Personally, I consider maven to be a virus (downloading files onto my
> computer without my permission).

With Maven 2, dependencies are all downloaded into your local
repository, and they seem to be more organized than most other builds
which mimic this process. The current Ant build downloads
dependencies without permission, too. Maven shouldn't be any scarier.

> M1 is difficult to configure to always run
> offline, and M2 is close to impossible.

It is difficult to believe that any developer is usually working
offline. To me, this is like taking out the Starbucks or
Dunkin'-Donuts coffee drip-line which is attached to my veins.
However, I have not had too many problems with building offline,
unless I don't already have the dependency in my repository. Maven's
"-Doffline=true" command-line option works well for me.

Maven would not be the default, but running "mvn" or "ant" from the
base directory would both be possible. Many source tree modules is
out the window, at least for now.

Moving code would be minimal, if any.

Thanks Konstantin,

I agree with the svn:externals setup, and can easily start putting
together a proof-of-concept. However, since I still retain a "newbie"

myself. I am ambitious, but until I see a clear acceptance, approval,

The place that comes immediately to mind is wush.net... maybe ping

You have Costin, Yoav, and myself (and probably others, I'm too lazy to

pom. But that isn't a reason that other people can't support it.
