intel network adapter on debian 4.0
Dear All, I have an intel gigabit ethernet card. When I install it on windows with the coming windows drivers, I can click on network connections select the card and change stuff like jumbo frames, "Receive descriptors" and "Interupt Moderate Rate". Now I have also a linux machine with debian 4.0 and kernal 2.6. When I plug in the card it seems that there are debian drivers already that comes along with debian installation. I can then set it to jumbo frames by setting the mtu value. But I have no clue how I should set the "receive descriptors" and "Interupt Moderate Rate" value in linux. I have had a look at the intel site and saw some drivers there too. I am a bit confused actually. Does it mean that I need the intel drivers for linux in order to set all these special features ? Or does the driver that comes along with the debian installation CD includes these features. I am quite new in linux, so I have no clue what I am suppose to do. The only thing I know to do in linux is by using ifconfig. How can I check if I need to specifically install the intel drivers ? How do I check if I can set the "special" feature using the driver that comes along with debian. How do I chekc what driver is it used and what funcitonalities can be set ? Please help me out as I need to set those features. Thanks in advance for helping me out. cheers. - Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.

system hangs when network shares down
Hello all, I have mounted some windows shares on my linux debian computer using smbfs. Everything works fine when the windows shares are available. However sometimes the windows samba server goes down and the windows shares are not available. On my /home/ directory I created a soft link to a mount point. When the windows share are down, simply typing "ls" in my "/home/" directory causes the system to have a very very slow response. Even the nautilus file manager that I use hangs up. I was wondering how I could solve this problem. The response because so slow that I can not work anymore in a convenient way on my computer. Anyone any suggestion on how to solve this problem ? Thanks RR

Sorry, should have been more explicit. /var/lib/dpkg is gone too. It was late at night and I forgot that I had made /var a symlink to a partition I was cleaning out. So, there is nothing left of apt or dpkg in /var, and only thought of it halfway throught he carnage. So now I guess apt knows nothing about the installed packages on my system. None of the apt commands will run without an error about missing files in /var/*. Reinstall the only solution? Or is another copy of this info kept elsewhere on the system? Unfortunately, I did not back up /var as part of a backup strategy. (good lesson I guess). all the best, Robert_L -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Ethics. how many of us have ethics? It's funny how people are so into killing our idols when they "betray us". interesting thread. happy birthday debian. I am free. >>He clearly states his principles, and as far as I know he lives by them. That's better than most people can say (including me). That's without even considering that he pretty much started the free/open source software movement all by himself. I'm not saying that he's responsible himself for everything that happened, but that without him leading the way (with prodigious programming as well as preaching) I don't believe there would be a Linux at all. IMO the reason RMS is so irritating is that he reminds us how we don't live up to our principles. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? "Segmentation Fault" error during installation
Hi everyone. I am a very new Linux enthusiast, and I am trying to intall it for the first time in a modest second copmuter of mine. I downloaded the disk images of Debian Linux 2.0 and I am installing it from the floppy to my modest system (a test/2nd system: Intel 386-25, math coprocessor, herc mono video, 8MB RAM, 80 MB HD & 40 MB HD, both IDE). (I want to learn and experiment in this modest system before I install it on my pentium II). Problem: I am able to boot from the Rescue disk and start the start the intall process. when it gets to the "Partition a Hard Disk" menu and I select either dev/hda or dev/hdb, it doesnt do anything. it quickly displays "segmentation fault" and returns to the "Partition a Hard Disk" menu. What is going on? dev/hda is a IDE drive, MS dos formated, 1 partition dev/hdb is also IDE, not formated, and DOS Fdisk-ed into 2 partitions (1 for swap, the other for Linux). I appreciate any help regarding this problem, and any other sugestion you might have about me experimenting with Linux. Thank you. [EMAIL PROTECTED] ps: can I run Xfree86 in my modest system?
Re: Newbie story --install
If someone comes along and says that you can run a winmodem under wine it will hurt. I was planning on looking into that sometime. What I did was the Win/Dos install as laid out on the website under installation and got the base system installed. Then I did the minimum package from the initial selection and downloaded at 14.4 althoguh the following would have worked. I chose my packages on the deselct and +'d them out just like I was going to download then just wrote them down (damn winprinter too). Then I went to the website and using Gozilla I downloaded about 35 -40 meg of additional files that I wanted under windows. The package search at the site does good at linking the depends. I put the files in a folder on the c: drive c:/debian/opts Then under the deselect method used the install from hard disk and called it /hda1 then when it asks what filesystem MSDOS then where are the .deb files would be /debian/opts/ the the package question is none. Then run dselect step 2) update and it should find the files and then you double check the selections in dselect and then run the 3) install.. Thats it..funny how almost simple it was. I do get a lot of errors that have to be hand debugged but very minor considering the possiblilites of not even being able to download. Robert

PPP ??? #@$#
I have encountered a strange problem with dialing out on PPP, and it is really bugging me now. I have got a slightly adnormal server running. This is what it looks like. I have got a local network running on and arcnet card whos address is 192.168.0.1, This works I and doesn't seem to stop working. I also have a hacked DNS server for my dial-up users which gets shut off when I go online. The problem is I can connect to my server and everything looks 100% except for the fact I can't do anything on the Internet. When I have connected and type in ifconfig this is what I am given : loLink encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Bcast:127.255.255.255 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP BROADCAST LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3584 Metric:1 RX packets:52 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 TX packets:52 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 arc0 Link encap:1.5Mbps ARCnet HWaddr 50 inet addr:192.168.0.1 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 IPX/Ethernet 802.3 addr:0123:0050 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:140 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 TX packets:218 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 Interrupt:5 Base address:0x260 Memory:d1000-d17ff ppp0 Link encap:Point-Point Protocol inet addr:196.25.198.23 P-t-P:196.25.198.2 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:11 errors:1 dropped:1 overruns:0 TX packets:37 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 This looks normal except for the ppp errors in which there is only one. This option is ignored if any uppercase letters appear in the search pattern; in other words, if a pattern contains upper- case letters, then that search does not ignore case. -I Like -i, but searches ignore case even if the pattern contains uppercase letters. -M Causes less to prompt even more verbosely than more. (2) as well as the environment variable for the script that 'less' uses to "pipe" : export LESSOPEN="|lesspipe.sh %s" (3) export PAGER=less Now, that script 'lesspipe.sh' I could not find on the debian system at work, so I ripped it from the slackware one at home, which lives in /usr/bin/lesspipe.sh . And the script is : - cut here --- #!/bin/sh # This is a preprocessor for 'less'. It is used when this environment # variable is set: LESSOPEN="|lesspipe.sh %s" lesspipe() { case "$1" in *.tar) tar tvvf $1 2>/dev/null ;; # View contents of .tar and .tgz files *.tgz) tar tzvvf $1 2>/dev/null ;; *.tar.gz) tar tzvvf $1 2>/dev/null ;; *.tar.Z) tar tzvvf $1 2>/dev/null ;; *.tar.z) tar tzvvf $1 2>/dev/null ;; *.Z) gzip -dc $1 2>/dev/null ;; # View compressed files correctly *.z) gzip -dc $1 2>/dev/null ;; *.gz) gzip -dc $1 2>/dev/null ;; *.zip) unzip -l $1 2>/dev/null ;; *.1|*.2|*.3|*.4|*.5|*.6|*.7|*.8|*.9|*.n|*.man) FILE=`file -L $1` ; # groff src FILE=`echo $FILE | cut -d ' ' -f 2` if [ "$FILE" = "troff" ]; then groff -s -p -t -e -Tascii -mandoc $1 fi ;; # *) FILE=`file -L $1` ; # Check to see if binary, if so -- view with 'strings' #FILE1=`echo $FILE | cut -d ' ' -f 2` #FILE2=`echo $FILE | cut -d ' ' -f 3` #if [ "$FILE1" = "Linux/i386" -o "$FILE2" = "Linux/i386" \ # -o "$FILE1" = "ELF" -o "$FILE2" = "ELF" ]; then # strings $1 #fi ;; esac } lesspipe $1 # eof - cut here --- 'less', for me, still does 'more' than 'most' ;) > > John Foster > Rob - ps: 1st posting here ... safely downgrading from hamm >>>
Hi, I have the following problem: The system was installed with debian-1.2 and since then "someone" installed a 'hamm' "ld" package, namely: ldso_1.9.2-3.deb Why "someone" did this I have no idea as there are no traces of any system admin documentation on the system. I was trying to upgrade to the latest perl and when executing dpkg -i ldso_1.8.10-2.deb it output to console something about "downgrading" the package, "chucked a fit" and left the system hanging. This was just great! nothing would execute except for the alrady loaded shell stuff like 'echo' ... The system upon reboot would hang at the "VFS ... " line. So I had to ftp to debian from the web server box, where I found in the 'unstable' 'hamm' section the above mentioned ldso_1.9.2-3.deb, unpack it with "-x", tar it up, put it on a floppy along with 'tar', use a 'rescue' disk to boot the nameserver, mount the root partition somewhere and 'tar -cvf the hamm ld' then 'ldconfig -v', cross fingers, touch wood and reboot the box ... it came up. Now, I would very much like to first find out why does this system have the 'hamm' ld on it. Is there some means of querying the debian system to find out what program/lib is depending on this 'ld'? And if there is no program/lib that _has_ to have this 'hamm' 'ld' I would like to know what is the *safest* way to downgrade to the stable ldso_1.8.10-2.deb. Also, having this "hamm ld" is it going to interfere with un upgrade to 1.3.x ? I wanted to upgrade perl and I got Preparing to replace perl 5.003.07-2 (using perl_5.003.07-10.deb) ... Unpacking replacement perl ... dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of perl: perl depends on ldso (>= 1.8.0-0); however: Package ldso is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing perl (--install): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Errors were encountered while processing: perl Any ideas greatly appreciated, ps: if replying feel free to CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED] as I'm only getting the 'digest' for this group. Re: Re: names good for marketing
>Alvin Smith writes: >> To put it bluntly, the issue is whether white people will accept a >> product with a Black African "sounding" name or not. >What a loony notion. >John Hasler Why loony? It hits the nail on the head. As I understand the original question was whether "Ubuntu" is a good marketing name. Most definitely it is not, if fact so bad that it had not even occured to me that they were trying to "sell" it until this topic came up. Mainstream marketing professionals are unashamedly racist in their appeals to the public. For example, we (in UK at least) are led to believe that Danes are racially superior when it comes to making lager, Italians at ice cream, Germans at car making, Swiss at clocks, Scanadanavians at furniture, Indians at spice, Japanese at consumer electronics, and Americans at software. Informed people know that any of this stuff could be made anywhere and often is (except for some agricultural products) - look at a can of that Danish-sounding lager and you will see it is really made in North London. Nevertheless, most of these advertising notions are based on some factual origin - clockmaking was indeed first perfected by the Swiss even if they no longer have the skill monopoly. However the idea of computer software emanating from Black Africa, as a marketing ploy implied by the name, will leave most members of the public baffled - probably even in Africa itself. I am not aware of any particular Black African tradition in this respect - nothing equivalent to the Swiss clock making for example. Probably the only connection between computing and Black Africa that will be made in most people's mind is the Nigerian 419 scams. Japanese cameras today are regarded as second to none, but Japan originally failed to break into the World camera market because they used their Japanese names. It was only when "Nippon Kogaku" rebranded to "Nikon" and "Asahi" to "Pentax" that they made the breakthrough. Similarly the promoters of Ubuntu are mistaken to have associated it in people's minds with a cultural niche. Nuke -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". That is, once the line is brought up due to an IP request, and then the line is brought down due to inactivity, the line will not come up again due to "sl0: xmit call when iface is down" (presumably due to the inability for the interface to be snooped by diald). Are these true bugs that should be reported? It's a real drag having to run "/etc/init.d/diald restart" every time I want to use the internet. Thanks.
mounting CD-ROM hangs/freezes entire system
When I % mount /cdrom the entire system hangs/freezes/crashes and I have to hit the reset button to reboot. When booting, the 2.2.18pre21 kernel identifies the CDROM drive as a "BCD E520C". It's a 40X ATAPI CDROM drive. Surprisingly, I can successfully mount /cdrom on the 2.0.36 version of the Linux kernel with no problems. (Annoyingly, I must reboot into 2.0.36 in order to install any packages from the CD-ROM.) Here's the relevant line in the /etc/fstab: /dev/cdrom/cdrom iso9660 ro,noauto, user, exec, nosuid 0 2 Below is my kernel configuration that I used to compile the 2.2.18pre21 kernel. Perhaps there's some unnecesary conflict which is causing the problem. ghostscript support for Epson 1290
Hello, I am using ghostscript to drive an Epson Stylus Photo 1290. Of all drivers I have tried, -sDEVICE=stcolor yields the best results, but the output looks more like 360 dpi than the 720 dpi the printer claims to support. When I try the option -r720 or -r720x720 the printer runns amok (text output instead of graphics). Does anybody know about a ghostscript driver that supports 720dpi for this printer or maybe another mailing list where these things are discussed? Please respond to my private address, as I have not subscribed to debian-user. Thanks in advance, Robert

[00/05] Embedded with systemd
Hi This is my first post to a debian-* list even though I have been a (happy) user for many years, both on the desktop and on embedded devices. I am currently looking at the implications that running systemd on some of our products will have, and while many things seem like they will get simpler, other things seem harder, much harder. I am posting this not to bash systemd, but to try and learn from other users who have similar use cases. I am breaking this into a few different topics to keep the conversation a bit more focused. [01/05] Embedded with systemd: systemd and SIL
By choosing packages carefully, it is possible to use linux in applications that need to meet SIL1 or SIL2 criteria [1]. I personally don't have any applications that need to meet SIL2, but it is possible to meet SIL1 by taking a normal installation and removing a bunch of stuff (initramfs, udev and inetd amongst others) until the system is deterministic enough (see the methodology in [2]). /sbin/init functions OK with a few static devices in/dev Given the tight udev/systemd marriage and the undeterministic nature of socket activation, I suspect that systemd will never be suitable for SIL applications. Are there any other debian embedded developers that need to meet SIL criteria? How are you planning to manage the fact that there are very few non-systemd distros left, or do we have to resign ourselves to a life of OpenEmbedded and buildroot? [02/05] Embedded with systemd: systemd and different modes
I have a use case where I have a logging unit with a few buttons that are available to the user. The buttons are read via the kernel GPIO methods. There is no display, no keyboard, only 802.11. Normally the unit starts a few daemons and starts the 802.11 in client (wpa_supplicant) mode. To help with field debugging I currently check the state of one of the buttons at startup and if it is pressed, the unit starts the 802.11 in host (hostapd) mode and starts sshd. This was trivial to configure with /sbin/init calling a shellscript that checks the GPIO and then chooses between two different runlevels. The runlevels are setup by making a few symlinks in rcx.d. Since it is not possible to make decisions in systemd unit files, this has become much harder. I have a solution for this, but it is smelly. How would you solve this? This is quite a common use case (at least in the world I live in), and I will post my solution later but I don't want to poison anybodies thinking right now. b.t.w I asked this question in #systemd a few nights ago and was told my use case was "bizarre" -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Sometimes you only want services to start based on a "weird" trigger. I have one use case where I only want a service to start once we have received a valid GPS lock. With /sbin/init it looked like this: #!/bin/bash while [ ]; do sleep 5; #wait for lock done; service & with systemd I have to have waitforgps.sh waitforgps.service (Exec=waitforgps.sh) service.service (After=waitforgps.service) Is this really the best way? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". [04/05] Embedded with systemd: systemd and kernel upgrades
This was recently posted on #systemd-devel: "To make this clear, we expect that systemd and kernels are updated in lockstep. We explicitly do not support really old kernels with really new systemd. So far we had the focus to support up to 2y old kernels (which means 3.4 right now), but even that should be taken with a grain of salt, as we already made clear that soon after kdbus is merged into the kernel we'll probably make a hard requirement on it from the systemd side." This is a very onerous requirement in the embedded world. There are many embedded platforms sold today that only have 2.6.X BSPs. While I agree that the BSP from vendors should be better (and it is getting better thanks to devicetree), it seems that we are doomed to run ancient userspace to match our ancient kernels. This change will probably hit me the hardest and for me it really cuts into what linux means. It used to be that I could run the same userspace on my tiny embedded device, my desktop or on the server --- the only difference being the kernel. It seems like the only solution here is to abandon debian and fall back to OpenEmbedded or buildroot. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". This is quite a common use case (at least in the world I live in), and I will post my solution later but I don't want to poison anybodies thinking right now. b.t.w I asked this question in #systemd a few nights ago and was told my use case was "bizarre" -- Embedded with systemd: systemd and weird triggers Sometimes you only want services to start based on a "weird" trigger. -- Embedded with systemd: systemd and kernel upgrades This was recently posted on #systemd-devel: "To make this clear, we expect that systemd and kernels are updated in lockstep. It used to be that I could run the same userspace on my tiny embedded device, my desktop or on the server --- the only difference being t

Re: compiling KDE3 - missing dcopidl
Thanks for your reply Craig. Bizarre as it may seem I had not installed QT3. Though I remember it as a requirement from when I compiled from CVS it totally slipped my mind this time round. Actually, it was tired eyes as well misreading the kde compiling requirements from kde.org- I was reading the QT requirements for 2.2.x ! Thanks for the reminder. All is installed and running well now. I ended up removing kde2.2.2 first for sanity. There seems to have been a problem with several headers from kdelibs not being copied over correctly to /opt/kde3/include/libkmid (ie. libkmid.h) , but I did it manually and the configure and make ran fine. craigw wrote: > If you install from source, the dcopidl should be in > kdelibs-3.0.tar.bz2. > > It is important to install in this order: > qt-3.0.3 , then arts-1.0.0, then kdelibs-3.0. > Are you setting all your env. vars? Second, the real problem is that for a long while now, I've not been able to burn CDs. I can't give examples of the exact error at the moment (not at home ATM), but sometimes (rarely) I can get it to do a dummy run. Most of the time, it never starts "writing", but instead just gives ... checksum? ... errors and fails out. Non-dummy runs work out the same, sometimes giving me coasters, sometmes not... backing up hidden files
I've been trying to find a clever way to back up or copy hidden files such as .emacs, .xinitrc, and so on, along with my other data files. The problem is that tar and cp ignore hidden files if you use * as a wildcard. And if you try something like this: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/temp$ tar -cvf target.tar * .?* tar will "walk upwards" to the root directory thanks to the dual function of "." (for hiding files, and for representing the current directory). I've found some Mickey Mouse solutions, but nothing very elegant, and I was wondering if anybody has a clever way to do this. - Robert -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Dear Arne, Great! I definitely owe you one. Xcin works well for me now on BIG5, which is what I use 95% of the time. The last 5% of my problem is GB. When I type "xcinterm-gb" it does indeed open up a Chinese xterm, but the input line (the box that says "yinshu banxing" in BIG5) is nowhere to be seen. If you can enlighten me as to what I'm doing wrong, I'd be eternally grateful. The installer is very nice. Libranet is a commercial distro (and a very good one too - it's what I use). Anyway, the installer and configuration utilities are the property of the owners, so Debian can't simply adopt it without permission. The free version 2.0 that you downloaded is free because the Libranet owners have generously chosen to make it so (presumably, to encourage you to eventually purchase the newer version 2.7, or the upcoming 2.8). However, just because 2.0 is available free doesn't mean that it was released under the GPL, as Debian is. Also, I would presume that Libranet hasn't released the source code for their installer, since they are not required to (under the GPL, you are obliged to release the source code). You can, of course, continue to upgrade your Libranet installation with apt-get. I'm not real sure what happens when you mix and match programs from gcc 2.95 with binaries that were compiled under gcc 3.2. Maybe someone else more technically astute can answer that. Sorry to hijack your thread, Subba, but this might be the source of your problem... I started experiencing freezing too, and at first I blamed my Debian installation. I did a reinstall, but the problem continued, and indeed seemed to grow gradually worse. I also have a (seldom-used) Windows partition - I started using it just to see what would happen, and sure enough, experienced the freezing there too. I noticed during Debian's boot-up that an error message would flash by (too fast to read). I explored his further, like this: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dmesg | grep error hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } After doing some searching on Google, I found that a lot of people had reported these errors. The consensus of opinion seemed to be that this could be a fading hard disk or bad controller, but many people suggested installing a new hard disk cable before trashing the hard disk itself. I did install a new cable, and the freezing problem has gone away. However, the "BadCRC" errors are still being reported during bootup. There were suggestions to turn off dma with hdparm, like this: # hdparm -d0 /dev/hda I tried that but it didn't stop the error messages, so I've turned dma back on again. # hdparm -d1 /dev/hda Another suggestion was to turn off dma by inserting this into GRUB's menu.lst configuration file: hda=nodma This led to a "kernel panic" error. I removed the offending line from menu.lst, and my system boots up again as normal, but the CRC error messages remain. The machine is usable and no more freezes since I replaced the cable. But I wonder if I'm taking a risk just doing nothing - should I be prepared to deploy my hard disk for use as a paperweight, or should I just muddle along and not worry about this? I'd be interested to know what others who have encountered these error messages and/or freezing problem have to say. regards, Robert -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". filesystem encryption
I've been considering creating a partition on my hard drive with an encrypted filesystem for storing my financial data. Looking through the literature on how to do this, it appears that there are several competing systems around. This is something I've never done before, so I'm a little perplexed about which system is best. Right now, the most up-to-date information I have comes from an article in LinuxFormat Magazine, December 2001 (pages 30-37). It was the cover story in that particular edition, and I think you can still download it as a PDF file from their web site (www.linuxformat.co.uk). Anyway, they seem to favor installing the cryptoapi modules at http://cryptoapi.sourceforge.net, plus the utilities at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/util-linux. It looks rather complicated, but I'm willing to try it. My question is whether or not this is the best way to go? The LinuxFormat article is more than a year out of date. I've looked through the Debian (stable) packages list, and it says nothing about cryptoapi, though a search on the word "crypt" reveals a number of other cryptographic packages such as cfs 1.4.1-7 which is also a cryptographic filesystem. Any pointers on this topic (and suggested online references) would be greatly appreciated. regards, Robert -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? libtrash & anacron
I recently installed Libtrash (it creates a trash can for Linux!). For some reason, the deb package (version 0.8) in Woody is way out of date (current version is 2.0) and the deb package only seems to include the documentation rather than the usable program. So I downloaded the source tarball from here: http://www.m-arriaga.net/software/libtrash/libtrash-latest.tgz It installed fine. I'm pleased to have a trash can, but of course it keeps growing in size, wasting hard disk space. Fortunately, Libtrash comes with a Perl script called cleanTrash which deletes files from the trash can when the junk reaches a specified size. Although cleanTrash could be run manually, it's more convenient to run it as a cron job. And since my computer isn't on 24 hours a day, I figured anacron was better. So, actually, I have two questions: 1) Is the only thing I need to do to get cleanTrash to run (as a cron job) is to stick it in /etc/cron.daily? 2) I did "apt-get install anacron" - it installed fine, but do I need to do anything else to configure anacron? Or is it just pre-configured to take over from cron? I suspect it is, considering the contents of my /etc/crontab file: # m h dom mon dow user command 25 6* * * roottest -e /usr/sbin/anacron || run-parts --report /etc/cron.daily 47 6* * 7 roottest -e /usr/sbin/anacron || run-parts --report /etc/cron.weekly 52 61 * * roottest -e /usr/sbin/anacron || run-parts --report /etc/cron.monthly # regards, Robert -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Centrino [OT]
A lot of people on this list are probably aware of this issue, but in case anybody missed it, those "cool new Centrino" laptops are something to avoid, unless you're content to run Windows XP only. Silly as this might sound, before you go any further, run aumix and set volume and pcm to maximum, then see if you've got any sound. I encountered the same (embarassing) issue when I first installed Debian. regards, Robert -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Automated installations
Does Debian have an application similar to RedHat's Kickstart? I want to be able to duplicate the same configuration on multiple machines, without configuring everything manually. Problems logging in
I'm running unstable, and about a month ago I noticed that after my machine had been up for a few days that I couldn't initiate a log in session or switch users. After the password is accepted, the log session just sits there and never returns a prompt. The system is just fine though. If I'm already logged in, I can run any program. Ctrl-Alt-Del does not work though. A few times, I've had the system recover after a long period of time. I update my packages every night hoping that an update will fix it, but as of yet it hasn't.Has anyone else seen this problem? Lost Fonts again in unstable
I'm running unstable, and I haven't been able to log in the last few days because of a recent update. I was finally able to log in and found that most of my fonts are gone. Most notably was Helvetica. I checked my fonts.conf and it looked alright, so I tried to make sure the font still existed on my system. To my surprise, I found that it was gone. Anyone know of a recent change in included fonts? To be more specific, Xemacs has more beautiful fonts and lets you change default font size. But Emacs is also good, and of course has the advantage of working on the command line as well as in X. There's no reason why you can't install both, since the commands are almost identical. regards, Robert -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble?
