setting xterm title with -T doesn't work

2006-03-06 Thread Andras Lorincz
Hi,

When starting xterm I would like to set the title with -T "string"
option, but it has no effect. Instead appears the title with the
hostname and current path. Why does xterm ignore the -T option?

poff script problem

2006-03-06 Thread Jude DaShiell
If a user account is added to the dip group that user on reboot can use
pon dsl-provider. That same user though cannot use poff dsl-provider, it
has to be used by root. I just found this out so those using roaring
penguin with dsl connections may want to take notice. Probably a good
workaround for this would be to add the same user to /etc/shutdown.allow.

Hi Jude,
I use pon and poff for my dialup(not dsl). I do not need root permission for
either. From what I read in /usr/bin/poff, it finds the ppp process and
'kill's it. Not sure where the problem maybe.

php4-ftp / ftp.so

2006-03-06 Thread Hans du Plooy
Hi guys,

I just migrated a bunch of websites from an old SLES9 server to a new
Debian Sarge server, and I ran into a problem. Sarge doesn't have the
php4-ftp module - I searched for it on the debian site too - it's not in
sid or experimental either.

How do I make the ftp functions work in apache2/php4 on Sarge?

Currently I'm getting the following error when running an "testftp"
script that the dev gave me:

Warning: ftp_chdir(): /home/www/web3/web/: No such file or directory
in /home/www/web3/web/testftp.php on line 24

Warning: ftp_mkdir(): mynewdirectory: Permission denied
in /home/www/web3/web/testftp.php on line 25

Thanks
Hans

Hi Hans,

I looks like that you have change the directory structure during the
migration. A plain

"no such file or directory" notice says enough.

Make sure that /home/www/web3/web/ is realy there, and with a little
luck the mkdir

error will vanish in to thin air aswell.

Re: User And Group create failures - sarge

2006-03-06 Thread Marlon v/d Linde :: Clue
Ok guys,

Found the problem to this behaviour...

The Debian::AdduserCommon module (from adduser-3.63) uses "nscd -i
group" to invalidate the group name service cache when a new group is
added.  Well, it should.

Unfortunately, it expects a file /var/run/nscd.pid to exist:

my $nscdpid = "/var/run/nscd.pid";
# this function replaces startnscd and stopnscd (closes: #54726)
if(defined($nscd) && -f $nscdpid)

system ($nscd, "-i", "group");

This code is broken because nscd's pidfile is called /var/run/nscd, as
least with nscd-2.3.5-13.

So the group invalidation doesn't happen, and so if you add a user with
adduser immediately after adding a group with addgroup, adduser may
fail (and continue to fail when retried) for a small period of time.

Consider using pidof(8) to identify running nscd
processes. This is what the nscd startup script does.

Thanks, Mark, after I installed everything that starts with php4- ftp is
now enabled (better cover my behind for future problems). I realised
that ftp chroots the user to their home directory, so the path is wrong.
I'm still getting one error:

Warning: ftp_close() expects parameter 1 to be resource, null given
in /home/www/web3/web/testftp.php on line 33

I am not a php programmer, so I'm not sure if this is a code problem or
a problem on my (administrator) side. I'll include the code for
reference sake.

Thanks
Hans

Gnome desktop environment removed on Upgrading using synaptic

2006-03-06 Thread Abhishek Verma

Hi all,

I have Debina Unstable running on my system. I tried to upgrade the
system using synaptic from an official debian mirror. When I looked at
the list of packages to be removed/installed/upgraded, I found that
gnome-desktop-environment was to be removed. I thought the new version
might have a replacement for this, so I went ahead with the updates.

But, now my system has no desktop environment, and when I try to install
gnome-desktop-environment, it says that it can't install since
gnomemeeting is uninstallable. When I tried to install gnomemeeting, it
says that it can't install because it depends on libopenh323-1.18.0
which is uninstallable. When I tried to look for the package libopen323
version 1.18.0, it is nowhere to be found. The current version available
for this package is 1.15.6.

Can anybody give me some idea how should I go about installing
gnome-desktop-environment. Also, why are there dependcies of packages
that have not yet been put into the repository.

Thanks in advance
Abhishek Verma

Re: xserver-xorg fatal configuration

Try purging the package and then reinstalling it, removing does just
like you say, it doesnt delete the configuration files but purging
does, try dpkg --purge xserver-xorg

Or you can allso try out apt-get -f ... the -f switch is --fix-broken
(it is usually used to fix broken dependencies but just perhaps it can
help you here).

Hi Abhishek,
from time to time, all the required packages for (in this case) gnome
are not avaiable when you last did a 'apt-get update'. This should be
remidieded in the near future, this is just expected behavior for the
unstable branch of Debian. So, wait a few days and 'apt-get update' and
try again. For more immediate and up-to-date info, try installing
irrsi-text or some other irc client and chat in #debian.
Cheers,
Kev

If the later is the case what is the reason for this? Did I open some

Tad,

1.6.8p7-1.3 does not set some ENV variables because it was deemed this
was a security risk. As a result it functions differently than previous

running 2.6.15, compiled with Debian's default config except for turning on
a couple of things so I could use the atop monitor. I've used ALSA from
the very beginning with my two SB Live! Value cards, and it works
perfectly.

Well, it has, but in just the past week I've noticed very strange audio
performance problems. If CPU usage spikes for a few seconds, the audio
tends to skip (when I'm listening to XMMS, for example). This has *never*
happened before.

Another thing that happens is that if I'm watching a video, and the video
player app freezes (which hasn't happened like this until now, either), the
audio will loop over about a quarter-second's data until either it gets
more audio to play, or the app that was playing it is killed. It sounds
like the same kind of thing that happens if you're listening to something
and the whole computer freezes, except the rest of the system is not
frozen, and it can be stopped by killing the app.

Right. When you use the kernel from here:
http://kernel.kolivas.org/
those problems go away.
My test is running a mondo backup that does 100% CPU *and* a clock with
a second tick *and* XMMS and the sound should never skip, and it does not.

Ah.. debugging.. not so much fun for us non-coders.
The error msg says enough though. ftp_close() should contain the
connection.. and in this

script is refers a $conn_id .
Now, I can't find the $conn_id anywhere, so null IS expected.
A quick look suggests that you should change the $conn_id in
$connection, as $connection contains

the ftp_connect + info for the connection it self.

I could just as well be off base here, I can't say I'm a coder aswell.

Random crashs under debian testing

2006-03-06 Thread Yannick Patois
AS: Really sorry if you get this message twice. I first posted it
04.03.2006 10:53, but saw that that my original message had not been
distributed over usenet outside of my provider. So I post it again
hoping for better luck.

Hi,

Since a few weeks (looks like to me latest KDE upgrade, but could be
unrelated), I experience crashed of my Debian testing machine. About one
per week, if not more.

Sorry for the length of this message, but I wanted to give you as much
information as I could.

SOME GENERIC REMARKS

- CRASH NEVER OCCURS WHEN THE MACHINE IS UNATTENDED (mine is up 24/24)
or in remote text access (I do remote backups, have a CVS server on it,
and such: never crashed during that kind of operations).

- IT USUALLY CRASH WHEN OR JUST AFTER I SWITCH X SESSION

- MODIFICATION IN XSESSION HANDLING DUE TO KDM UPGRADE
A few weeks ago, I had an Xsession file as follow (I use kdm):
# cat /etc/kde3/kdm/Xservers
[ removing comment lines]
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg :0 vt7 -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp
:1 local /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg :1 vt8 -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp
:2 local /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg :2 vt9 -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp
:3 local /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg :3 vt10 -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp  -config
/etc/X11/xorg-video.conf

When latest kdm version arrived, this didn't worked any more, and I
added in /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc:
StaticServers=:0,:1,:2
(I don't know yet how to specify a different config file for the server).
-> Crashes never occurred before that change (of course I cant swear
that the cause is related to this).

SYMPTOMS BEFORE CRASHES
===

 - Text consoles becomes unreadable. Either the screen is black, only
cursor shown, or strange graphics in black/gray/white filling the
screen. In both case, except of the display, the terminal seems to be
functionals.
 - Pixmap under X11 are sometimes filled with random data found in
memory. Eg. the KDE bar is filled with what looks like to be some
Firefox page displayed some time ago.

 - When switching session (by alt-ctrl-fn) a temporary black screen
appears (not unusual) but there is blue-green dotted cursor as wide as
the screen that can be moved with the mouse. Sometimes the crash occurs
on that screen.

 -> Those symptoms can last pretty long before a crash occurs: as I'm
writing this message, the text console are black again.

LOGS TRACES LEFT AFTER REBOOT
=

I didn't had much in the logs on previous crashes, but last one let good
traces, I cant interpret them, but maybe some can.

Using setenv DISPLAY

2006-03-06 Thread Haines Brown
I'm running sarge, logged in as user using text log in and then
startx. For no apparent reason, I could no longer use sudo to start
gtk apps without "cannot open display error".

I start by checking what my DISPLAY value is, but encountered an
anomaly:

  $ echo $DISPLAY
  :0.0

  $ sudo echo $DISPLAY
  :0.0

That seemed OK, but when I did:

  $ env | grep DISPLAY.
  DISPLAY=:0.0

  $ sudo env | grep DISPLAY
  [nothing returned]

Why do I get inconsistent results? In the first case, the value of
DISPLAY is known, but in the second when I use env, it is not found in
the environment accessed by sudo.

At least something is wrong, so I set out to do (teufel is the host
name):

  # sudo setenv DISPLAY teufel:0

but I get the error, "command not found". Shouldn't it be accessible
from a bash prompt when using sudo?

I suppose I could also do:

  $ sudo export DISPLAY=`teufel`:0.0

but wanted to clear up the previous questions first.

Am I correct to assume that the host name is optional when using
either setenv or export? Is it true that setenv command should not be
supplied the screen number "0", but that export must have it, as in my
examples above?

You're more or less confirming what I suspected - I also couldn't see
@conn_id being declared or assigned a value anywhere.

In the first case, the shell expands $DISPLAY on the
command-line before sudo is executed.

sudo no longer lets DISPLAY through without you telling it
to first: actually, sudo has changed from a blacklist to a
whitelist model for environment variables. see
http://bugs.debian.org/349729 for instructions on
workarounds (and there's quite a few similar/related bugs
filed against sudo at the moment, too)

More precicely, 1.6.8p7-1.3 moves from a blacklist model
(where known-dangerous environment variables were stripped)
to a whitelist model (where you have to explicitly name the
environment variables to retain in the sudoers file).

What window manager are you using?

Are you 100% sure xterm is the terminal being used?

It doesn't. Your shell prompt is setting the title to what you see after
xterm sets it to whatever you're putting in with '-T'.

USB 802.11g wireless adapter for Debian

2006-03-06 Thread Andrew Archibald
Can anyone recommend an 802.11g USB wireless adapter which is supported by
the Linux kernel?

I am running the latest Debian testing on i386. Currently I use a device
supported by ndiswrapper & the windows driver but this situation isn't
ideal. For example I have to reinstate the kernel module every time I
upgrade the kernel. And the windows drivers are non-free. And it’s all a
bit delicate in terms of stability.

I've spent quite a lot of time on a search engine (google) reading up on
linux wireless support and reviewing the archives of mailing lists. I've
uncovered some hardware compatibility lists & discussions but up-to-date
recommendations seem to be rare. Information from 2004 is clearly not
going to help me with chipsets changing as quickly as they do!

If it makes any difference to the availability of hardware I’m in the UK
but happy to order online anything that would work.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers,
Andrew.

libxml2 and libxml2-dev are probably what you need. The C library is
fully functional, and there is another project underway to get them up
and running with C++

Related site is http://www.xmlsoft.org

To search for packages in future try using "apt-cache search
package_keyword". For example to find an xml library type "apt-cache
search xml | grep library"

apt-proxy is poorly documented WRT error messages. I guess this happens
because it needs Packages files from the backend directories to get the
paths of that files. No packages files -> no path data -> no clue where
to store the files (to have correct url) -> apt-proxy confusion.

Solution: update the Packages files by running "apt-get update" on
clients, so apt-proxy would need to download them at least once.

(self-add...) I am maintainer of apt-cacher and the current version
will let you import anything, but may deliver wrong files later. The
next version will track the files in a similar way that apt-proxy does.

This particular problem seems to be related to gnomemetting requireing a

I did the same thing as the original poster but I managed to get parts
back by selectively downgrading a few packages to testing.

convert or mogrify is probably the easiest.

>

It complains for two reasons:
1) The options are supposed to come before the input file (though it
might be smart enough to figure this out; and
2) Your -resize option is under-specified.

Try

convert -resize 10x10% image.JPG images.jpg

or

cp image.JPG images.jpg
mogrify -scale 10x10% images.jpg

I have a perl script that generates web pages for digital photos that
includes the snippet:
foreach $a (@files)
{
`cp $a small/`;
`mogrify -scale 30x30% small/$a`;
`cp $a thumbnail/`;
`mogrify -scale 4x4% thumbnail/$a`;
...

That's for 5Mpx images, which is why the thumbnail size is only 4%.

How does it complain? I just ran that on a JPEG here and it worked

convert or mogrify is probably the easiest.

I have tried many programs found using apt-cache search BUT either I am to
stoopid to figure them out or they really don't do what I want.

Fore xample:
convert image.JPG -resize 10% images.jpg complains.

It complains for two reasons:
1) The options are supposed to come before the input file (though it
might be smart enough to figure this out; and
2) Your -resize option is under-specified.

The options are most definitely NOT supposed to come before the input
file. This changed in version 6.x to make the ImageMagick syntax more
consistent. The old behavior still works in certain situations, but
there are no guarantees.

yes.

Right ... just wanted to verify.

For a per user basis, here is what I do at my school where I have
installed fonts in my ~/.fonts directory:

1. Copy the ttf fonts in ~/.fonts
2. run fc-cache -fv ~/.fonts

and I can then see the fonts.

For system wide fonts, I guess you put all the fonts in
/usr/local/share/fonts/ and tell the X system that this directory
contains the fonts and then run fc-cache -fv. How to tell the system
where to look for fonts? I suggest one should search google (I am not

I see I have 1.6.8p7 .. but am I to presume that no -1.3 (or any minor

system and there's no need to display -0.0, where -1.3 resides at end
of version ?. IOW - I don't have the latest version?... and my minor

I'm new to linux and just curious and trying to understand the inner

This has been a known problem, I believe it is in some bug reports.
I believe that most modern windows managers have this problem, I
know gnome, fluxbox, and kde don't work with the -T option.

You can some what get a work around this by using the -e option. It
is not the best solution, as you will loose the terminal if you
close the program. But I do it with top, and a dnetc client all
the time as these are always up. I always use them with the
background option of & so I have the current terminal window I
start it with useable.

Gqview will do it automagically. All you must do is open the program
and view a directory. The setup config allows a choice in thumbnail
size and the thumbnails will be located in
/home//.gqview/thumbnails
or
/home//.gqview_thmb

First thing is to stop X from
attempting to start.

Reboot, and at the grub/lilo screen, choose the "Safe" option. If
you're using lilo, you'll want to enter "linux single". After you get
logged in as root, disable any display manager you have starting up;
there are dozens of ways to do this; what I would do is to edit
/etc/init.d/[xgkw]dm (each of these that exist) and put "exit 0" as the
first executable line in the script. Then "exit" out of "safe" mode,
and you should boot up normally to a text-based prompt.

Let us know if this works to this point, or if things go wrong before
this point. Then we can go from there.

I believe no modern window managers at all have this problem... it not
being a window manager issue in any way.

Gnome, Fluxbox, and KDE have no control over or issue with the '-T' option.
Most distributions, if not all, configure their default shell (usually
bash) to step on the title of xterm windows.

By the way... you really need to set your MUA up to quote properly. I
think even KMail can do *that*.

We had this talk about pci cards a little while ago, it should apply
to USB also as the main difference is the way its connected, one is
USB the other is pci card. You will find that most cards in the G
vein will not have kernel support.

Now if your talking about gpl support, and having company support
their products under Gnu\Linux you might want to search this list.

http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Linux.Wireless.drivers.802.11ag.html

I know some people like the ralink cards such as the rt2750 which
should be offered by many vendors. As far as it working as
advertised I really do not know your wireless needs. I do feel
that this is one of the most open cards supported under the gpl, I
personally hate any card that uses ndiswrapper, or any binary
windows driver.

I have used the rt61 based pci cards under Debian and I have some
reservations. But giving the state of wireless drivers under Linux
you will be very limited to what you can do.

IPS HLBR 1.0 released (off-topic)

2006-03-06 Thread Eriberto

IPS HLBR - Version 1.0 can detect malicious traffic using regular
expressions

Version 1.0 of Hogwash Light BR, released march 5th 2006, brings two
interesting new features. The first one is the ability of using
regular expressions to detect intrusion attempts and e-mails with
virus or phishing. The second is the use of lists with banned words.

HLBR is an IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) that reads network
traffic in the layer 2 of the OSI model. Since it works like a bridge,
it stays in-line in the network topology and doesn't need an IP
address. So, HLBR is invisible to attackers. Traffic filtering
(including the packets contents) can be done with simple rules.
Version 1.0 can use regular expressions to filter the packets. Below
is an example of rule with regular expressions:

(please see http://hlbr.sourceforge.net/hlbr-rule-1.gif)

In short, all TCP traffic destined to port 25 of the e-mail server
will be filtered. If the text:

filename="anything_different_of_line_breaks.s__c__r"

(please ignore underlines in s__c__r)

is found inside the packet, that means there are an attachment .scr in
the e-mail (virus). So this packet will suffer the action named 'virus'.
This action logs the event, dumps the malicious traffic in tcpdump
format and drops the packet. Below is an example of rule against a type
of buffer overflow attempt against DNS servers:

(please see http://hlbr.sourceforge.net/hlbr-rule-2.gif)

In this case, due to the use of pipe characters (|), HLBR will check
the traffic for the hexadecimal sequence given as an attack signature.

HLBR lets you use rules for blocking attacks against network servers.
In order to fully understand it please read our documentation at
http://hlbr.sourceforge.net/ips-en.html - explanations about the IPS
concept including charts.

HLBR site is at http://hlbr.sourceforge.net.

To create thumbnails use the -thumbnail option of convert. This option
preserves the aspect ratio of the picture. So you need to specify just
the width or height of your thumbnail.

Sample commands look like

convert -thumbnail 160 original.jpg thumbnail.jpg
convert -thumbnail x160 original.jpg thumbnail.jpg

The first one creates the thumbnail whose width is 160 pixels. The
second one creates a thumbnail whose height is 160 pixels.

Sorry, got into this list late and lost the original post!

Old version iso's "for a gradual upgrade" can be found here:

If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough:
Yes, that is probably true regarding my situation. I try my best.

Further, I believe dpkg -i is what I have tried already as documented in my
Appendix 1, with the packages present in /var/cache/apt/archives/. So, is
there another way, maybe removing packages from a more basic level? Where a
larger part of the "X/xserver/gui system" (maybe including even KDE and all
depenting on that), before reinstallation of everything. Should be
substantially (enormously!) less work than beginning from schratch, since I
would like to preserve most configurations (well, is there maybe a risk that
the same error is preserved?).

My knowledge doesn't include any idea of how to proceed

From the clue below, I assume you mean "gdm", not "gcm".

What is the command of program I should use to edit the gdm file?

Something like "nano gdm".

BTW, I'm putting this back on-list; it's considered improper on this

discussion on-list, everything gets archived so that the issue becomes
part of the documentation for Debian, and others who might have better

 You could use bootx to start an installer kernel copied from the
net install cd to a harddrive with OS9 on it. It's somewhere in the
debian install documentation... If I recall correctly, the docs refer
to old installer files though, some weeks ago someone mailed the
correct installer filenames in this list, should be in the archive.
If you keep the OS9 & bootx install intact while installing debian
(on a separate partition or disk) it can be very convenient if you
need to do a reinstall in the future.

Problems with new testing kernel package

2006-03-06 Thread Angelo Bertolli
After installing kernel 2.6.15 on my laptop, my laptop suddenly won't
boot from that kernel. It doesn't even get to init. It seems to not be
able to find the gzip module on startup. I wrote down the errors since
all I get is BusyBox when I boot:

... some hardware detection stuff here ...
Begin: Mounting root file system ...
Begin:  Running /scripts/local-top ...
Done.
Begin:  Running /scripts/local-premount
Attempting manual resume
Done.
FATAL:  Module gzip not found
mount: Mounting /dev/hda3 on /root failed: No such device

After that it can't find /sys or /proc, and in the end says there's no
/sbin/init. And here's the weird thing: I can mount the root filesystem by hand and simply chroot over, and run the scripts in init.d to get things running.

So what's going on? What do I need the gzip module for anyway?

At first I thought it was something wrong with initramfs-tools because if I
install/reinstall a previous kernel like 2.6.12, that kernel becomes unbootable
as well.
But honestly, I'm not really that savvy about initramfs-tools and initrd-tools,
and what the differences are.

The other weird thing is that I don't have this problem at all on my desktop.

I don't know if this is related, but I noticed that there are no more -386
kernels, only -486 in the repository.

Can anyone give me a clue as to what the problem is? I'm holding onto an old
kernel for dear life now, but I know I can't do this forever.

Angelo

Environment Variables for sudo

2006-03-06 Thread Timothy Cowlishaw

Hi All,

am having a bit of a problem with setting environment variables on my
web server. I need to set the following, for all users, including root.

i have added the following to /etc/profile, /etc/bash.bashrc, /
root/.profile and /root/.bashrc:

export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/java/j2sdk/bin
export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/java/j2sdk
export CATALINA_HOME=/usr/local/java/apache-tomcat

this works fine for normal users (and for root when using su, which i
had disabled), but apparently not for root (via sudo).

the output from a 'sudo env' is this:

TERM=vt100
PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/
usr/X11R6/bin

LOGNAME=root
USER=root
SUDO_COMMAND=/usr/bin/env
SUDO_USER=tim
SUDO_UID=1000
SUDO_GID=1000

could anyone enlighten me on where sudo gets its environment
variables from, as it apparently is not in /root, as i expected! any
ideas what i might be doing wrong / overlooking?

many thanks,

Tim

I think it is a design flaw, more than an implementation bug. Speaking
from the outside of Debian, it seems that the 'design' of apt grew
over time. Whether 'stable' is an alias for 'sarge' or 'sarge' is an
alias for 'stable' is a big deal in a 'well designed' system, but this
issue seems not to have been resolved as apt was implemented. Now to
'fix' it would involve major rewrite of stuff that 'works quite
nicely, thankyou'. IMHO, its not going to happen.

And I really do thank all the developers for the existence of apt and
the packages that are available on it!

Consistent with what? Not many tools are expecting non-option
arguments before options (I can't think of one). How about changing
cp, mv etc.? It's a bad decision to change behavior like that.

I would assume that sudo merely executes the program, and does not start
a new shell (unless you ask it to), thus my assumption is that it's your
env, merely executed with root's privilages.

As for su, from the man page:
OPTIONS
  - make this a login shell
So, if you want to be root, AND have settings associated with root's
login, use:

su -
As opposed to just:
su

Hope that helps.

the same I had.

I have just signed up to day and are not familiar with debian, neither
can I tell you what to do, but only tell what I had to do.

Installed the «testing» on my hp laptop very easylie and are working,
therefore I tried the same on my desktop (asus a8v-x, 754 amd64-xp3000,
radeon 9600), but x server or gdm wouldn't start. Base system seemed to
be working, but some error with apt (apt-setup)

Couldn't get it to start no matter what, tried:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-org
installing kde and kdm

If it's something wrong with the kernel-2.6.15, xserver-org or gdm i
wouldn't now.

What I did:

1 Downloaded each beta 1 from 11 November 2005
( http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/etch_di_beta1/i386/iso-cd/ )

Installed it and

2 updated the sources list with #apt-setup noprobe

had problems with gpg-key missing / GPG error

3 wget http://ftp-master.debian.org/ziyi_key_2006.asc -O - | apt-key add -

I have now upgraded everything, and are running kde desktop on the
2.6.12 kernel, system seems to be stable.

Consistent with what? Not many tools are expecting non-option
arguments before options (I can't think of one). How about changing
cp, mv etc.? It's a bad decision to change behavior like that.

Internally consistent. If you look at the 6.x documentation they treat
the whole thing as a stream operation, i.e. load an image, do this, do
that, maybe load a second image and so something with that, composite
the two images, load a third, resize it, change some colors, add a
border, and then write output. If you look over the documentation it
starts making a lot of sense.

This is especially useful when using other interfaces such as the Perl
module, PHP module, or C++ API.

For example, from one of my perl scripts:

   my $image = Image::Magick->new;

   # Read the image into the object, print any errors that occur
   my $rc = $image->Read("$file");
   warn "$rc" if "$rc";

   # Create the thumbnail using ImageMagick commands
   # Feel free to set the sequence to anything you like for
   # thumbnail creation
   #
   # For more info, see
   # http://www.imagemagick.org/script/perl-magick.php
   $image->Set(quality=>'85');
   $image->Set(density=>'72x72');
   $image->Set(interlace=>'Line');
   $image->Resize(geometry=>'300');
   $image->UnsharpMask(radius=>1.3, sigma=>1.1, amount=>40, threshold=>0.05);
   $image->Crop(geometry=>'125x125+20+20');
   $image->Set(bordercolor=>'white');
   $image->Border(geometry=>'1x1');
   $image->Write($sqfile);

The command line program convert would follow the same sequence of
opration:
convert file.jpg -quality 85 -density 72x72 -interlace Line -resize 300
-unsharp 1.3x1.1+40+.05 -crop 125x125+20+20 -bordercolor white -border
1x1 out.jpg

There is a pretty good explaination of why these options changed at
http://www.cit.gu.edu.au/~anthony/graphics/imagick6/basics/

Kai,

In the ultimate sense, we may have the "same" problem, that is, such a problem
that may be resolved by a complete Debian reinstallation.

Now since my installation has become quite "mature" I am looking for some
means of avoiding reinstallation from scratch, since this will give me more
hours (days) of work than I am prepared for. Something must be done, however,
quite soon, since I am virtually excluded from running ANY Debian update
tool.

My hope is that some experienced Debian user may see the key issue
(http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2006/03/msg00604.html) and understand
how to correct the malconfiguration that came about after my fatal mistake,
and I promise honestly to take all measures to avoid repeating it...
(http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2006/03/msg00501.html).

Ah; there's a problem. X can't find your mouse.

X believes you have a mouse on /dev/input/mice, but apparently you do
not. Do you have a ps/2 mouse, a serial mouse, or a USB mouse (or
something entirely different)?

If USB, /dev/input/mice should work; if serial or ps/2, I'm not
surprised it doesn't work. In that case, reconfigure X with
"dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and specify /dev/psaux as the location
of your ps/2 mouse, or /dev/ttyS[0-3] for your serial mouse (probably).

Then try starting X manually with "startx &". Does the system work? (If
not, you might can semi-gracefully shutdown X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace;
or you might can get back to VT1 with Ctrl-Alt-F1, at which point you
can kill X with some other magic commands we'll go into if need be.)

Also, at the console prompt (non-X), you can get a feel for your mouse
working on /dev/input/mice by entering "cat /dev/input/mice" and moving
your mouse around; if your mouse is working, you should see a bunch of
garbage appear on your screen. Ctrl-C will stop this process (and you
might need to blindly enter "reset" if your display now produces garbage
in response to your typing).

BTW, I'm [again] putting this back on-list; it's considered improper on
this list to take threads off-list unless they veer off-topic. By
keeping the discussion on-list, everything gets archived so that the
issue becomes part of the documentation for Debian, and others who might
have better input can add their two cents.

Re: USB 802.11g wireless adapter for Debian

Cheers,
Andrew.
