AS: Really sorry if you get this message twice. I first posted it 04.03.2006 10:53, but saw that that my original message had not been distributed over usenet outside of my provider. So I post it again hoping for better luck.
Hi, Since a few weeks (looks like to me latest KDE upgrade, but could be unrelated), I experience crashed of my Debian testing machine. About one per week, if not more. Sorry for the length of this message, but I wanted to give you as much information as I could. SOME GENERIC REMARKS ==================== - CRASH NEVER OCCURS WHEN THE MACHINE IS UNATTENDED (mine is up 24/24) or in remote text access (I do remote backups, have a CVS server on it, and such: never crashed during that kind of operations). - IT USUALLY CRASH WHEN OR JUST AFTER I SWITCH X SESSION - MODIFICATION IN XSESSION HANDLING DUE TO KDM UPGRADE A few weeks ago, I had an Xsession file as follow (I use kdm): # cat /etc/kde3/kdm/Xservers [ removing comment lines] :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg :0 vt7 -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp :1 local /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg :1 vt8 -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp :2 local /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg :2 vt9 -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp :3 local /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg :3 vt10 -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp -config /etc/X11/xorg-video.conf When latest kdm version arrived, this didn't worked any more, and I added in /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc: StaticServers=:0,:1,:2 (I don't know yet how to specify a different config file for the server). -> Crashes never occurred before that change (of course I cant swear that the cause is related to this). SYMPTOMS BEFORE CRASHES ======================= - Text consoles becomes unreadable. Either the screen is black, only cursor shown, or strange graphics in black/gray/white filling the screen. In both case, except of the display, the terminal seems to be functionals. - Pixmap under X11 are sometimes filled with random data found in memory. Eg. the KDE bar is filled with what looks like to be some Firefox page displayed some time ago. - When switching session (by alt-ctrl-fn) a temporary black screen appears (not unusual) but there is blue-green dotted cursor as wide as the screen that can be moved with the mouse. Sometimes the crash occurs on that screen. -> Those symptoms can last pretty long before a crash occurs: as I'm writing this message, the text console are black again. LOGS TRACES LEFT AFTER REBOOT ============================= I didn't had much in the logs on previous crashes, but last one let good traces, I cant interpret them, but maybe some can. - From /var/log/messages: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: ------------[ cut here ]------------ Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: Modules linked in: binfmt_misc lp thermal fan button processor ac battery ipt_TOS ipt_MASQUERADE ipt_REJECT ipt_LOG ip6table_filter ip6_tables ipt_state ipt_pkttype iptable_raw ipt_CLASSIFY ipt_CONNMARK ipt_connmark ipt_owner ipt_recent ipt_iprange ipt_physdev ipt_multiport ipt_conntrack iptable_mangle ip_nat_irc ip_nat_ftp iptable_nat ip_nat ip_conntrack_irc ip_conntrack_ftp ip_conntrack nfnetlink rsrc_nonstatic pcmcia_core ipt_TCPMSS ipt_tcpmss iptable_filter ip_tables pppoe pppox ipv6 ppp_generic slhc dm_mod w83627hf hwmon_vid eeprom i2c_isa snd_seq_dummy snd_seq_oss snd_seq_midi snd_seq_midi_event snd_seq usbkbd ide_generic usblp snd_mpu401 snd_mpu401_uart snd_rawmidi snd_seq_device joydev irtty_sir ns558 snd_intel8x0 snd_ac97_codec snd_ac97_bus analog snd_pcm_oss snd_mixer_oss sir_dev psmouse i2c_sis96x snd_pcm snd_timer snd irda gameport serio_raw pcspkr floppy i2c_core rtc sis_agp ide_cd cdrom agpgart crc_ccitt ohci_hcd ehci_hcd shpchp pci_hotplug sis900 mii parport_pc parp Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: rt usbcore ne2k_pci 8390 soundcore snd_page_alloc ext3 jbd mbcache ide_disk generic sis5513 ide_core evdev mousedev Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: CPU: 0 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: EIP: 0060:[unmap_page_range+43/227] Not tainted VLI Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: EFLAGS: 00010206 (2.6.15-1-k7) Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: EIP is at unmap_page_range+0x2b/0xe3 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: eax: db457e64 ebx: b8e7efe8 ecx: 00000001 edx: 00000000 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: esi: c39f88b4 edi: b7fa1000 ebp: db457e98 esp: db457e2c Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: ds: 007b es: 007b ss: 0068 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: Process bash (pid: 20920, threadinfo=db456000 task=c4824030) Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: Stack: db457e64 b8e7efe8 c39f88b4 b7fa1000 db457e98 c013b79f c032443c c39f88b4 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: b8e7efe8 b7fa1000 db457e64 00000000 00000000 00000001 00400000 db457e98 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: d9649a14 d01bc2a0 00000001 c013f0a7 db457e98 d9649a14 00000000 ffffffff Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: Call Trace: Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: [unmap_vmas+167/339] unmap_vmas+0xa7/0x153 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: [exit_mmap+79/179] exit_mmap+0x4f/0xb3 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: [mmput+28/96] mmput+0x1c/0x60 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: [do_exit+371/749] do_exit+0x173/0x2ed Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: [sys_exit_group+0/17] sys_exit_group+0x0/0x11 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: [get_signal_to_deliver+605/621] get_signal_to_deliver+0x25d/0x26d Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: [do_signal+82/223] do_signal+0x52/0xdf Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: [do_sigaction+282/307] do_sigaction+0x11a/0x133 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: [do_sigaction+282/307] do_sigaction+0x11a/0x133 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: [sys_rt_sigaction+109/132] sys_rt_sigaction+0x6d/0x84 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: [sys_sigreturn+120/160] sys_sigreturn+0x78/0xa0 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: [do_notify_resume+39/53] do_notify_resume+0x27/0x35 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: [work_notifysig+19/25] work_notifysig+0x13/0x19 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: Code: 55 57 56 53 50 83 7c 24 2c 00 8b 5c 24 20 74 15 8b 54 24 2c 8b 42 04 85 c0 75 0a 83 3a 00 0f 45 c2 89 44 24 2c 3b 5c 24 24 72 08 <0f> 0b df 02 20 a2 27 c0 8b 54 24 1c 8b 02 89 da c1 ea 16 8b 40 Mar 4 09:18:04 patois kernel: <1>Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed!
