I don't remember (it is all a bit hazy I have been learning so much

How to analyze a server crash?

2003-01-16 Thread martin f krafft
Hi there,

I was just rsyncing a 10Gb tree to a remote server over SSH when the
connection was reset by the remote side and the server was
consequentially unreachable. So I proceeded to get to it physically
and discovered that not even the console was working -- the screen
remained blank.

From the logs, the only thing I could see was that grsecurity logged
a signal 11 (SIGSEGV) sent to the rsync server process. No other
logging entry shows anything about the freeze of that system.

So my question is: how can I figure out what happened, and why is
there absolutely no information between my last successful automatic
fetchmail log entries and the sysklogd restart message? Under what
circumstances can Linux crash such that it can't even write logs
anymore and doesn't respond to the console?

!

Unfortunately, there is another problem... The mouse
doesn't work - that is, it works (on windows) but
Linux doesn't yet detect it or something;

During the installation I entered the following data
about the mouse:

Driver: mousedev (this one should have been loaded)
Device: /dev/mice/input

This is the information Redhat 8.0 told me about the
mouse.
I hope this may help you to tell me what's wrong &
what should be done.

Thanks in advance!

I would assign an 2Gb partition at the beginning of every drive, and
assign the rest for the big raid.

Just install the system onto the first 2G partition of the first drive,
and only later worry about setting up the RAIDs.

Use the 6x 34G partitions for your "large dataset". I would suggest:
5 disks in raid configuration and a hot spare. That will give you 136G
of data-space.

The small partitions you use to mirror your root. Assign one for swap
(how about the one that is "hot spare" in the raid config?). Think
about what to do with the other three. (e.g. a nightly backup of
your root perhaps: A mirror doesn't protect you against "woops, I didn't
mean to delete THAT".)

Unfortunately, there probably isn't any way to really figure out what
happened short of trying to reproduce it. For example, a hard-lock
caused by a hardware problem or a driver bug might not leave you with
any messages because the machine locks before the kernel can properly
panic. I've had that happen when X crashed, too, and that wasn't really
even a driver bug (it was combination of wine and font servers). Linux
also doesn't have a standard crash dump facility, and even if it did PC
hardware doesn't give you a way to force a dump like other UNIX server
platforms do.

The best suggestion I can think of right now is to read about the "magic
sysreq" kernel debugging option, enable it, and try to rsync another
10GB. But if the system is truly locked it won't be able to respond to
your sysreq.

Re: How to set colors of ls listings?

Someone on IRC pointed me at dircolors. But since my problem is that
the primary colors are too strong and clash with the background, I
ended up editing the profile in gnome-terminal and assigning a pastel
RGB value to each primary color in the Color palette provided to the
terminal applications. Thus ls thinks it is using Red but it comes
out pink. Works great.

Hi,

I did check the packages page. I forgot to mention that in my email.
Try to click on the link that says 'list of files'. I get this:
"Can't find that package, at least not in that distribution and on
that architecture.". Here is what apt-cache show libstdc++2.9-glibc2.1
returns for me (I have this package from 3.0r0 CDs):
Filename:
dists/potato/main/binary-i386/oldlibs/libstdc++2.9-glibc2.1_2.91.66-4
.deb
Section: oldlibs
Obviously 3.0r0 had this package but there was nothing about it being
removed in the 3.0r1 announcement. That is what I am wondering about.

This one's resolvable if you have the Magic System Request key enabled
(not sure if it is by default). It's sysrq-k to kill everything in
your current console. If you use gdm or xdm on the console you're
killing, then it should restart automatically and give you a new
login. If you use kdm and you have "Automatically log in after X
server crash" enabled, then it will automagically restart your session
where it was last saved; otherwise it'll behave the same as gdm or xdm.

To test, switch to a console. Hit sysrq-s (Pressing sysreq is
alt-prntscrn, you need to hold both down to hold down sysreq). If you
see "sysRq: Emergency sync" and a few lines where it syncs everything,
then you've got it. If you get thrown back to a different console or
nothing happens, then you don't. To enable it, recompile your kernel
and say yes to CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ.

For details on what all you can use System Request for, check out
/usr/src/kernel-source-*/Documentation/sysrq.txt

Though this is pretty rare, usually sysrq will work.

You're using the wrong search form. Try the "Search package directories"
one.

I don't know about the CDs, but I can confirm that the package is still
in stable on ftp-master.debian.org, which is canonical.

  [cjwatson@auric ~]$ madison -s stable libstdc++2.9-glibc2.1
  libstdc++2.9-glibc2.1 |  2.91.66-4 |stable | i386, m68k

If you use the normal kernel, you will be able to use 960 MB (IIRC), so
you lose about 5% of RAM. With bigmem, some IO operations are slower (I
believe), so I'm not sure it is a good idea to enable it.
(If you want to enable it, you will need to build your own kernel)

I am not. I entered the above package name in that input field and it
transferred me to
http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=libstdc%2B%2B2.9-glibc2.1&searchon=names&subword=1&version=stable&release=all
There is a further link to
http://packages.debian.org/stable/oldlibs/libstdc++2.9-glibc2.1.html
On that page you see "View the list of files in
libstdc++2.9-glibc2.1". Try clicking on it and you'll get the above
error. I do know the package is on FTP, but you can't expect from
everyone to install off the net. I still hope someone will explain why
the package was removed from 3.0r1.

4.2.1 and 3.3.6 X servers coexist?

2003-01-16 Thread Russell
Hi all,

On the XFree86 page: http://www.xfree86.org/current/Status9.html#9
some video cards only work with 3.3.6 X servers and others work
with 4.2.1 X servers.

If i put the two video cards in the pc, can i choose
whether to start the 3.3.6 server or the 4.2.1 server
with suitable entries in a single XF86Config-4 file?
Could a two-head or xinerama system run with these two cards?

KDE questions

2003-01-16 Thread Paul Johnson
OK, having gotten tired of dealing with nautilus, I gave KDE a shot.
At first it was kind of strange and constricting (first impressions
quite overwhelming), but after a while it sort of became a part of
me. Feels strangely like CDE but actually good. I was wrong:
Neither KDE nor Gnome suck. They're both alright, and both have thier
differences. My folks are getting tired of WinME, I think I'll put
both on thier box and let them pick it out.

I've started to get curious about a few things, though...

1) Konsole is growing on me, despite it's rather nonstandard (for an X
app) style of configuration (haven't these guys learned about X
resources?). Is it possible to have KDE to open a konsole when a
program requires a terminal open, and when a subsequent
terminal-based program starts, have it become a tab in the other
   program-started konsole?

2) What's with konqueror not hanging on to cookies between sessions on
   some sites (namely, slashdot)?

3) How do you say "drawer" in KDE? Having all the icons on the panel
without being able to drawer some away seems a little oddball and I
haven't really experimented too much with the panel (beyond 4).

4) Why doesn't kweather have a method to configure it after it's
initial configuration or to display a forcast? gnome-weather has
it, wmweather has it...why can't kweather get with the program?

Ah, I see. I think this is just a bug in the web pages though; note that
the same effect happens for e.g. g++-2.95, which most certainly has not
been removed.

Please drop language like "you can't expect", as it doesn't appear to be
intentional that it isn't on the CDs.

It was not removed, as I have just explained. It may not have appeared
on the 3.0r1 *CDs* for some reason, but I am certain that this was
accidental. I suggest that you report it to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have partly solved my own problem. The bash-type shell
which is part of the installation software is just what I need to
get a shot at modifying the inittab file. It turns out that a
special inittab file is installed just for the installation
process and then the real inittab is put in after one finishes
all the configuration.

It's actually the lines right before what's shown that would be most
helpful. If you can reproduce the error, please post again starting
a little higher.

You may want to check that you have all the Buil-Depends installed for
pine before waiting for another failed compile, and you can do this the
easy way:
apt-get build-dep pine

I don't know if this makes any difference, but my config file

Note the extra zeros, so maybe this would work for you:

Hi Jim,

Both hotplug and the 2.4.18 kernel are stable packages (they are in
Woody).

I'm looking at the modules I have loaded into my kernel and I see
usbkbd, mousedev, hid, usbmouse, input, usb-uhci and usbcore loaded to
support my USB mouse (Logitech optical scroll) and USB keyboard.

I'm sorry I can't offer better information, I set this up about 12
months ago (when Woody was in testing), and I just remember that
installing hotplug was exactly what made life real easy.

Cheers!

I just took a look at the man page for both sshd and sshd_config, and I
don't seen an option for IdleTimeout. There is:

ClientAliveInterval
Sets a timeout interval in seconds after which if no data has
been received from the client, sshd will send a message through
the encrypted channel to request a response from the client. The
default is 0, indicating that these messages will not be sent to
the client. This option applies to protocol version 2 only.

Not sure if that's what you're looking for, though. If you're just
looking to log out dle users after a certain period of time, check out:

The kernel has actually told you what to do - contact the motherboard
manufacturer about a BIOS upgrade. If you're not sure what you're doing
with flashing the BIOS, you may want to get someone else to help walk
you through it - choosing the wrong thing will really mess things up.

dnsmasq is in the Debian distribution. It is a snap for
home networks. Aim it at your ISP's dns server, tell it
whether to use /etc/hosts and/or dhcp server data files. Simple.

may i ask, which imap server are you using with this. i've had a

uw-imap just refused to let me login, and gnu-mailutils imap server

I have the ATI Radeon Mobility 9000, is yours the mobility? (in a laptop)

If so, don't bother trying to get any XConfigurator to know about it, it's

I am using frame buffers.

Mine's on a powerpc, so I do have different issues, but I definitely had to
build my own kernel (for my 1GB ram, too)

I don't have my XF86Config-4 here at work, nor my kernel .config, but, I'll
send you them this evening.

Maybe I can help further off list at that time.

I have no idea if you'll need to do this, but I had to upgrade to testing, I
also added "deb http://people.debian.org/~daenzer ./" to my deb
/etc/apt/sources.list for a few modules, as described below (I am lookikng

1)
I bought a new server with an ati 9000, an in the instalation I selected
the "ATI Radeon" an no Frame-Buffer.
The XF86Config-4 indicate the driver is "ati".
I can't start X.
I have another box with an mga and I can't use Frame-Buffer too, if i
try to use frame-buffer I can't start X either.

2)
I have 1GB of Ram and an AMD processor, so I need to use bigmem. Do I
have to make a custom kernel?

Unidentified subject!

2003-01-16 Thread martin f krafft
hi folks,

i run djbdns at a couple of sites and while it does not have any means
to dynamically update DNS information (that's *not* an advantage of
BIND, just look at their implementation), the datafile makes
programmed edits really simple.

I want to give my users the possibility to change their zone entries
(mainly for dynIP DNS). however, i would like to do so in a very
secure way.

let's say everything works on the server, all i need is a method to
authenticate a user and upon successful authentication, pass the IP
s/he used for the authentication on to a script that takes care of the
edit.

There exists a fake POP3 server that does exactly this (it always
serves an empty mailbox), but it's cleartext. I would like at least
SSL, and asymmetric authentication with certificates would be the
best.

i don't really have time to implement this myself, so i am wondering
if you guys know of such a tool. I have considered GPG-signed email,
but that strikes me as a little cumbersome for the task, and it
doesn't guarantee timely changes. I've thought about an SSL website
with a form that also exposes a simple interface via HTTP, and while
i like this approach, i don't think i am capable enough to implement
a CGI securely, at least not with the time I have at hand. is there
already such a system?

any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Maybe it is just me[I use the nvidia driver], but this has never worked
for me. sysrq-k will successfully kill everything in the current
console after an X hang, but then the screen just turns to gibberish and
I still can't get control of it.

Then, I was thinking of SSH. Is there a way to obtain the fingerprint,
ID, or another bit of information about the RSA/DSA key used to login
to sshd? let's say I have an account dyndns which can modify
a specific zone file. I add the ssh keys from users who are allowed to
interact with dyndns to the authorized_keys file. now if i can get at
the key ID used to login, i have all that i need.

File too large problem

2003-01-16 Thread berger
Hi all

I got a weird (?) problem.
I got a machine with debian woody on it (Linux version 2.4.19 (root@flora) (gcc
version 2.95.4 20011002 (Debian prerelease)). I got with several tools the problem,
they can not handle files bigger than 2 GB. But the Kernel seems okay, I also can
create huge files over 2 GB. The tools I had this problems are for example md5sum,
gpart and mkisofs (creating an iso with a file bigger than 2gb in it). I installed all
of them via dselect.
Whats seems strange: if I copy mkisofs or md5sum from a SuSe-Box (Linux version 2.2.16
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 2.95.2 19991024 (release))) to the debian-box, the
tools can handle huge files!

Anyone got a clue?

Thank you
D.Berger

Although moving your apt cache is probably the better solution, you
can also try this:

- `apt-get clean`
- `apt-get upgrade`, hit 'no' when asked if you're sure you want to
  do this
- `apt-get install `
- Repeat until done

It's more work, but, if you're short of space system-wide, you can do
your upgrade a few packages at a time, cleaning out the package cache
after each batch, and get by on very little disk space for package
cache. (Just so long as you don't run into any huge webs of
dependencies and conflicts, such as those seen in a libc upgrade...)

MOUSE won't function

2003-01-16 Thread Joris Huizer
Hi everybody...

I've got the following problem: the mouse
doesn't react - that is, it works (on windows) but
Linux doesn't yet detect it or something;
I tried the following:

apt-get install hotplug

But it doesn't seem to help at all (I did a reboot to
be sure the change would be applied (as this has to do
with hardware) but it didn't do anything

During the installation I entered the following data
about the mouse:

Driver: mousedev (this one should have been loaded)
Device: /dev/mice/input

This is the information Redhat 8.0 told me about the
mouse.
I hope this may help you to tell me what's wrong &
what should be done.

If there is specific info needed, please tell me what
you need to know and how I can get to know it (like a
command which tells hardware info or where needed logs
are)

Thanks in advance!

Joris

Well, it is possible to have the key fingerprint logged; see the last
message of #75043. However, that probably isn't what you want.

I think you should use a forced command in authorized_keys. For example,
I have one such file that contains this line:

  command="userv dyndns dyndns dynamic.greenend.org.uk riva",no-pty,no-port-forwarding
1024 35
145413580969648476044072749424723997577855609708600898296078782540051360757631277317814917027038279588528053774482503019012709429846592053864406645721891713477828254982531683029630103055847963503784826642231356729554071003805850344215815518908121062306905784894054069613278599523363884251674573384786501899737
 cjwatson@arborlon

When ssh'ing in using that single-purpose key, that command is executed,
and you get to give it whatever arguments you like. Those should serve
to disambiguate among users.

If you need security between users as well, then using userv as above
may help. Give them each their own account, if necessary disabled except
for a single authorized_keys entry with a forced command. Set up a userv
service which knows how to check users against the dynamic DNS entries
they're allowed to update. Not perhaps the easiest thing in the world to
set up, but it's possible.

Re: URGENT: Building kernel.

2003-01-16 Thread Kevin . Bewley

Before you compile your Kernel (In this case you'll need to start again)
and probably do a 'make clean' in the source directory followed by 'make
menuconfig' then find the option about RAMDISK SUPPORT - then turn it off!

then I'd 'make dep', 'make modules'.. &c.

PS. I don't think this is the Debian *way* of doing the compile but I never
had a problem my way so I've never bothered to learn how to do it the
Debian way.

Anyhow, essentially the answer is to turn off the RAMDISK SUPPORT in your
Kernel Configuration seetings prior to compilation.

Hope this helps,
Kevin

Alternatively, RTFM.

When you start up emacs with no file to edit, it always (in my
experience) presents you with an opening screen which tells you, inter
alia, how to *quit* emacs and how to run the tutorial.

CD sound

2003-01-16 Thread tallison
This is one of those, "It used to work..." problems.

I have OSS sound.
I have one CD-R and one CDE-RW (scsi emulation blah-blah-blah)
I have sound on things like XMMS, Xine.

I have no sound in my cdplayer.

I can start the disk spinning from wmcdplayer and wmsound shows nothing
turned off. But there's nothing coming through.
I'm not sure where to even start looking.

/dev/cdrom is mapped to the devfs cdrom0 (which is the correct device).

aumix also shows the cd-player volume enabled.

Like I said, it used to work. I jumped from Stable to Testing is that
last thing I can think of doing that was of any significance.

For some reason (I'm sure it's a good one, but I have no idea what
it might be), /etc/logcheck/logcheck.hacking (apparently obsolete),
/etc/logcheck/logcheck.cracking, and /etc/logcheck/logcheck.violations
on my system include "nested" as one of the patterns they match.

At this point, there does not appear to be an easy workaround for
this short of removing "nested" from these files, as logcheck does not
include a cracking.ignore file or directory. (You can add "postgres.*:
.* Nested Loop" or similar to /etc/logcheck/violations.ignore.d/local
to stop this from showing up as a security violation, but it will still
appear as a system attack.)

You may also be able to convince postgres to do its nightly maintenance
quietly instead of spewing thousands of messages to the log; I've reported
this as a bug against older versions of postgresql and been told that a
newer version "finally got debug messages under control", but I haven't
verified whether this means the nightly maintenance can be gagged in a
fashion which will survive an upgrade of the postgresql packages.

The ideal solution, IMO, would be for logcheck to add a
cracking.ignore.d and for postgresql to install a file there
(/etc/logcheck/cracking.ignore.d/postgresql) containing the necessary
pattern to tell logcheck to ignore these specific messages.

One way to do it in KDE is to edit the K menu. Add your own menu with the
stuff on it that you want. Then add that menu as a button to your panel.

Yep, those are sgid directories, just as you'd thought. On a
directory, sgid causes newly-created items with the directory to
default to ownership by the directory's group rather than the
creator's group. e.g., If I were a member of group root, I would be
able to create files in /debian/doc (since it's group writable), but
they would be owned by esper.root (the directory's group) instead of
esper.esper (my default group) like they would be if I created them
in, say, /tmp or another non-sgid directory. (Note that home
directories are sgid by default in debian, also.)

Before you compile your Kernel (In this case you'll need to start again) and
probably do a 'make clean' in the source directory followed by 'make
menuconfig' then find the option about RAMDISK SUPPORT - then turn it off!

then I'd 'make dep', 'make modules'.. &c.

PS. I don't think this is the Debian *way* of doing the compile but I never
had a problem my way so I've never bothered to learn how to do it the Debian
way.

Anyhow, essentially the answer is to turn off the RAMDISK SUPPORT in your
Kernel Configuration seetings prior to compilation.

Hope this helps,

which 2.4 kernel and patch(es) to avoid IDE disk corruption when DMA on?

2003-01-16 Thread Daniel Barclay

I've been having a heck of a time with repeated IDE disk corruption
when I try to enable DMA mode, and with trying to figure out which
versions of the stable (2.4) kernel actually are stable.

What is the recommended combination of base kernel versions and
patches to avoid IDE disk corruption and system hangs with a
dual Athlon MP system (A7M266-D motherboard)?

Thanks,
Daniel

A setgid directory simply means that files created inside those
directories will be created with the same group as the directory. It's
nothing to worry about in this context either way, really.

Vulnerability in VIM?

2003-01-16 Thread Ron Johnson
http://www.guninski.com/vim1.html

Description:
Opening a specially crafted text file with vim can execute arbitrary
shell
commands and pass parameters to them.
Some exploit scenarios include mail user agents which use vim as editor
(mutt) or examining log files with vim. The malicous text should be near
the begining or the end of the file which mitigates the risk.

Details:
The problem are so called modelines, which can execute some commands in
vim, though they are intended to be sandboxed.

The cure is to put "set modelines=0" in ~/.vimrc or /etc/vim/vimrc.

Is the cure worse than the disease?

CD-RW mounted like this only works as CD(IDE). You need to use SCSI
emulation mode to get it as Read/Write. This is FAQ.

 http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/ch-install.en.html#s3.7.3

Well, unused CD-RW disk is blank (unformated). Besides, this is not
like floppy where you write it randomly. You use "mkisofs" to create
disk image and you use "cdrecord" to write it into CD-RW.

I know there are some SF.NET projects which aim to use CD-RW as R/W file
system, but thst is beyound normal usage.

I hope you read some other chapters of my Reference to get used to Debian
basics. Debian requires fine grained attention to the details but it
will not do anything behind you. You are in-control and responsible :)

samba and vpopmail auth in debian - is it possible?

2003-01-16 Thread Vladimir Kozlov
Hello,

Maybe it was already an answer for this, but I spend three days searching
Internet (what a big trashcan!) with no success.
The problem is that we would like to have users in our PDC (under samba) to
have one auth mechanism both for access to domain and to mail server (under
qmail+vpopmail).
Maybe the right solution will be to have LDAP auth with squirrelmail plugin to
change LDAP passwods?
Could you please give me any thoughts?

Thank you in advance.
Kind regards,
Vladimir.

Technically, yes, as long as your nameserver is not in your zone.

Zones are delegated to IP Names. If your domain is myzone.com, and your
nameserver is ns.myzone.com, the delegator must include the IP address
of ns.myzone.com in the .com zone file as a "glue" record in order for your
nameserver to be found. In this case, you would have to have a static IP.

If, on the otherhand, your nameserver is ns.hiszone.com, you can have myzone.com
delegated to ns.hiszone.com. Technically.

There will be some disconnects, though. If you setup your zones' TTLs to 300 (5
minutes),
as your addresses change, it will take 5 to 10 minutes for the old cached
responses to expire and new lookup requests to be fulfilled by queries back
to your NS.

Since it requires all records to have TTLs of 300, it's a Bad Thing. Too
much wasted traffic.

As a practical matter, I don't know of any registrars that will take a registration
without the IP addresses associated with the NS records, and most of them
include them, technically incorrectly if the "glue" record isn't needed,
in their zone files to keep traffic and repeated lookup requests to a minimum.

What I do instead is use cname records in the real zone that point to my
dyndns names. This works for everything except MX records, which can't point
to cnames. But I just use the dyndns name for the mail hosts in the MX record.

You don't need "All" AND "+Includes" -- you can have just "All" here, or
a list of the options you want. It could be that +Includes is causing
problems as a duplicate.

Next step: Did you stop and start Apache after making the change(s)? If
not, do so (should be /etc/init.d/apache stop && /etc/init.d/apache
start -- I find that reload doesn't always do the trick, for whatever
reasons).

Are the pages you're trying to utilize labeled with the .shtml

How were the CD-RWs written? If they were written using UDF (which is
what a number of Windows programs like to do with CD-RW media), you
won't be able to read them without the experimental UDF support enabled
in the kernel -- and my understanding is that it still has a lot of bugs
to be ironed out.

You are mounting the CD-RWs, right?

Also, what is your full /etc/fstab line? Should be something like:
/dev/cdrom /cdrom iso9660 ro,user,noauto 0 0

Make sure you have an fs type listed -- otherwise you *WILL* have
problems, regardless of media.

the problem is probably easier resolved by using another IDE controller,
I highly reccomend the Promise ATA/100 and ATA/66 series(have not tried
the ATA/133). DMA problems are most often caused by buggy IDE controllers
or perhaps the driver.
