There are some known problems which may affect you. Please have a look at
the currently open bugs at:

   http://bugs.debian.org/src:openoffice.org

Maybe one of these is true:

- OOo has a problem with your window manager (Oroborus, Fluxbox and possibly
   others) Bug #171556

- You do not have the English or German langpack installed, and your LANG
environment is set to a different language to the language pack that you
  installed. Bug #171623

I understand know why the file lastlog takes only 24 1k-block instead of 6306.
That's because there are a lot of zeros it.

Not quite. Files on (most) Unix filesystems can contain "holes". If
there's a large block of zeros in a file, and the file is created in
the right way (like by seeking to a position and then writing) the
blocks containing zeros don't actually take up space on disk.

If you copy or tar files like that, you may need to specify an option
to allow sparse files.

2002-12-09 Thread Dan Jacobson
http://www.cliffshade.com/dpfwiw/cd-r.htm#multi says each time you add
another session (more data) to a disc you loose 10MB of space to the

Is it that serious on GNU/Linux with cdrecord, and if so, I don't
think I saw it in the docs.

These are the sorts of problems you're expected to be able to handle
yourself if you're looking at development kernels, or at least provide
much more detail than that so that you can produce useful bug reports.
No offence meant, but it sounds like you might be better off sticking

mailboxes is what you want, and you can still use the {host}mailbox
syntax as well, something like

mailboxes {mailhost.sea.rdlg.net}custmail {mailhost.sea.rdlg.net}corpmail
{mailhost.sea.rdlg.net}provmail

Then, when hit 'c' for change mailbox, then to see the list
defined in your .muttrc's mailboxes directive.

I've seen many redhat boxes in which installed rootkits included
something to the effect of 'echo "6969 stream tcp wait root /bin/sh" >>
/etc/inetd.conf'. Having a firewall up in this case prevents the
cracker from using the installed backdoor, even after an
intentionally-exposed service is broken. It's a very good safety net to
have, especially in the case of an always-on static-IP-address cable
connection, which is likely to be swept by script kiddies who then
later try to connect to the boxes their scripts successfully penetrated.

However, in the course of my experimenting I did rm –rf on the /cdrom

not sure what I need to do next to get things back in order.

The /etc/fstab file states that /dev/cdrom is mounted on /cdrom but
I’m not sure what to do to get it re-mounted (if indeed it is unmounted)

Any help would be appreciated. My problem is high level enough that
I’ve not been very effective with my google searches.

Er, I'm not sure what level you're at so forgive me if I state the
obvious or miss your point...

/cdrom is just a directory like any other, you can just recreate it using
mkdir /cdrom

The /etc/fstab file just says where things should be mounted, not where
they are mounted. To actually mount a CD, when you put a new one in the
drive, the command is
mount /dev/cdrom /cdrom

Then
umount /cdrom
when you remove it.
You may need to be root to run these. I guess the various GUIs have a
means of doing these things too... Not sure about that though.

Hope that helps

Chris

As recommended by Eric S. Raymond in his "Ultimate Linux Box"
articles, I would recommend an external U.S. Robotics V.Everything
external. When I have to use a modem (when the DSL goes down, or
dialing up to my friendly neighborhood BBS), this is my warrior. It
works like a champ.

If you can't find this modem anywhere, I suggest an external modem.
Most internal modems today are WinModems, plus, they make debugging of
serial problems a pain, and the only way to perform a hard reset of
them is to restart the computer. Not exactly the best for uptime.

My two cents,

FTP through NAT is major hackage, since both sides open ports and
connect to the other host. If you were using a Linux 2.4 router, then
it'd be as easy as 'modprobe ip_conntrack_ftp ip_nat_ftp', but I've
never used one of these little 'SOHO broadband router' thingies.

This line looks interesting. I'd read up on this and see if it can be

Easier said than done - I mean to "report problems". I once went to

report a bug and in the end gave up.

Maybe I am just stupid.

Fortunately openoffice.org is now a debian package so I suppose I can

Correct. Actually you could do so for a while before it reached Debian:
there were enough people reporting bugs on it despite the fact that the
bug tracking system didn't know about it that we took the unusual step
of adding an override, so it's had BTS support since late September.

I havce tried to add a line for swedish in the languages.dat file, but I

RE: Proftp behind firewall problem solved

2002-12-09 Thread Michael Olds
Thanks for the response Rob,

I should be recognizing this by now...whenever I shoot off my mouth about
having solved a problem, it isn't really solved at all: Mistaking the fact
that it works for the solution of the problem.

1. This is a one-man 2-computer setup, so I generally ftp from behind the
firewall, but I would like it to work just to make it work, and I will
eventually want it to work for a couple of friends whose sites I would like
to host.

2. I am probably using the wrong terminology. I use Cute FTP. The settings
for this connection are:
SFTP using SSH2 (Secure Shell) port 22
Use Global Settings
and I have SSH2 set up on the Linux box and it works (meaning I connect and
I can up and download files).

My (thin-film level) understanding was that SSH2 actually pretended to be
whatever open ports were necessary for the communication, but all traffic
went through 22. At this time the firewall is actually closed on 20 and 21
and everything else except 22, 80, 110, 25.

The address I connect to is not the internal IP but the domain name; the
client log shows it is going through the Internet and is initializing SFTP
module.

So I don't know what to say here.

Answering your second response here, I do not know what more I can do to
look into it further except to let my understanding mature to the level
where I can see what I am overlooking. I bought O'Reilly's TCP/IP Network
Administration and a half dozen other books and have read the various
manuals (and Google how to pages where this very problem seems to be being
solved all the time) and tried a huge number of variations on that setup
with no success.

Best Wishes!

Uh, that's weird. I don't think this can be very robust, since the data
port is semi-randomly chosen...Plus, it's the SSH port, so how are you
going to SSH/sftp/scp into that machine?

This isn't the error message. This message just says that there was
an error (a while ago) but not so long ago that exim will try again
yet.

This looks ok (at least compared to my exim 4 setup), but maybe you
need to add 'byname' to the route_list line.

Look back in the log for the error that is keeping the message stuck
on the queue. Or you can run 'exim -qff' and then look for the new
error message as exim retries the delivery.

NVidia Riva TNT PCI with XFree86

2002-12-09 Thread Ben Hill
Hi,

I am having some hassle setting up my NVidia Riva TNT PCI graphics card with XFree86
on Debian 3.0 rev0.

I have set up the device manually in the XF86Config-4 as a "nv" type, but when I try
to start X, it just tries to display, then retrys endlessly.

Do I need to add NVidia drivers? I noticed that there is an NVidia drivers source deb
when I did a package search.

Has anyone set this up?

Cheers,

apt-get problem

Hello all!

I have this problem since yesterday with apt-get on my laptop:

/var/lib/apt/lists/download.uk.kde.org_pub_kde_stable_latest_Debian_woody_._Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
--
changing the cache size in /etc/apt/apt.config 'APT::Cache-Limits [number];' did not
help and the problem persists, I cannot use apt at all!

And now the same problem started on my stationary box too, I installed a program and
when I wanted to install another one about 30 min later I got:
--

Again changing the cache size doesn't help.
Note: this has got nothing to do with lack of memory or space, there is enough of
both. I've google'd on this too without any success.

Not being able to use apt is frustrating...:-(

As far as I can tell, this happens if the i810 doesn't have the ac97
codec. Assuming that it really is an i810 card [1], you might have
better luck getting a response from the linux-kernel mailing list.

[1] You've explicitly put it in /etc/modules, so who knows! Note that I
don't have to explicitly add i810_audio to /etc/modules or
/etc/modutils/* for my laptop; instead the kernel works it out
automatically.

> eepro_init_module: Probe is very dangerous in ISA boards!
> eepro_init_module: Please add "autodetect=1" to force probe

The eepro module needs at least an io argument to set the I/O base
address(es), and possibly an irq argument too. You can use 'options'
lines in /etc/modutils/* to set options that are always added when
probing named modules; see the modules.conf(5) man page and remember to
run update-modules after editing files in /etc/modutils.

If it's a PCI card, you might want eepro100 instead?

and i'd go as far as to log everything that the firewall drops and
then add rules to drop certain packets without logging them before.
i.e. if you receive a lot of requests for port 137, block that one

Stealth firewalls are in some cases better. If you DENY a packet, then
the remote end knows that something answered the request, as it got a
denied response back. If you DROP the packet the remote end gets
nothing back.

As with any of the RFCs, there comes a point were they need to be
re-examined and updated accordingly. IIRC, the original configurations
for MTAs suggested routing traffic for anyone (aka open-relay). With
the rampant abuse of this we now see just the opposite suggested.

IMHO, I am not a fan of HTML interfaces. However, I use ipmasq on my
debian woody box to do ipmasq/NAT/firewalling. (One benefit of the
Linux solution is that you can install squid and set up a web
cache/proxy to decrease bandwidth usage.) Check the
/usr/share/doc/ipmasq/examples/stronger directory for the firewall
rules. The files are sufficiently commented and the manpages aren't
too hard to understand either.

Re: Modem

2002-12-09 Thread Randy Edwards
I have to buy new modem and I have dilemma what to buy. Is there any
suggestion? What is better usb or serial modem, external or internal, and
what's more important which modem works on Debian?

All modems are serial -- that just refers to the way they send bits to the
computer (e.g. USB = Universal Serial Bus). Despite the extra cost, I prefer
external modems. The diagnostic lights are invaluable and I'm assured that an
external won't be a WinModem.

The key is to avoid a WinModem or softmodem. These are barely support in
Linux (a few models are, but the vast majority aren't). WinModems dump
processing onto the OS (Windows) via a device driver and thus save some money
on hardware/circuitry.

When buying an internal modem you can find models that are not WinModems,
but you have to ask and double-check (often the sales people will lie and tell
you that it's not a WinModem just to sell something). Sorry, can't help you
with USB modems as I have no experience with them.

Personal choice, I got a PCI bus internal modem (U.S. Robotics model
3CP5610A), because I didn't have space for another appliance or wall
brick.

The danger is that you can end up with a Winmodem if not careful. Look
for compatability with DOS, or especially Linux ;). Another keyword is

hej,

can't say i know what the problem is, but if you have access to the
file you're missing, here's what i imagine a quick fix would be:

(on the old machine)
$ dpkg -S /path/to/sehyph.tex
(which will give you the package name)
$ apt-cache show packagename | grep Version
(which will give you the version)
$ apt-get --reinstall install packagename=version

granted it's not the most graceful fix, but i'd bet it'd work :)

DNS problem with Yahoo

2002-12-09 Thread Jaldhar H. Vyas
I run a mailing list related to Hinduism at the domain
lists.advaita-vedanta.org and recently list members who use Yahoo mail
have been complaining about their posts bouncing. This is the kind of
message they get:

>--- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
> Message from yahoo.com.

>

> Remote host said: 550
> <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: User unknown
> Giving up on 216.162.42.100.
>

Now it looks like this is my problem but the user (actually an alias to
listserv) does exist and lists.advaita-vedanta.org resolves fine. Besides
people from many other sites are able to post to the list. Only Yahoo
seems to have this problem. Just in case, here are the relevant lines
from my postfix/main.cf

relay_domains = $mydestination, .advaita-vedanta.org
smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated, permit_mynetworks,
reject_non_fqdn_recipient, reject_non_fqdn_hostname, check_relay_domains

lists.advaita-vedanta.org is a CNAME to advaita-vedanta.org. It's primary
name server is samadhi.braincells.com (216.162.42.100) which is running
woody and BIND 9. The only recent change I made to DNS was switching to
BIND from djbdns about two weeks ago.

Again this appears to be the only site which is having any problems but
it's a big one. Before I begin the arduous process of finding a clueful
human at Yahoo to talk to, can anyone spot mistakes in my setup which
could be causing this problem?

And the other end *still* knows something there, as it didn't get a
Destination Host Unreachable and it didn't get a response back. So
you still are visible, you just get the false sense of security in
thinking you aren't. All you really accomplish is pissing off
legitimately misguided users, and detouring the incompetant cracker
that wouldn't get in anyway.

Mozilla and x-java-vm

2002-12-09 Thread Anthony Campbell
Is there a plugin anywhere for Mozilla to use application/x-java-vm?

I have the java debs from Blackdown but I still get a message telling me
I need to install this plugin. Oddly enough, it seems to be there for
Netscape, but I can't find it anywhere on my disk. A search on Google
brings up numerous referencers to the question but no clear answer as
far as I can see.

I have a patch which I meant to send to Branden but haven't gotten

Re: Swedish latex?

2002-12-09 Thread Gustav Olsson
Hello again,

The problem is that the file "sehyph.tex" doesn't seem to exist in the
package tetex-base, as it used to do. Searching for it with the
search-function on debian.org leavs me with nothing, the file can't be
found in the unstable release. Hence, "apt-get --reinstall install
><><><" doesn't do much either, since the version in which sehyph.tex
exists isn't available in the unstable release. Um, I hope this cleared
things out a little...
More suggestions, anyone?

(on the old machine)
$ dpkg -S /path/to/sehyph.tex
(which will give you the package name)
$ apt-cache show packagename | grep Version
(which will give you the version)
$ apt-get --reinstall install packagename=version

granted it's not the most graceful fix, but i'd bet it'd work :)

Openoffice. See:

We promised not to upload the openoffice.org packages to unstable very
often, because they are so large. When we do upload next time, it will

Huge (1.9GB) .xsession-errors file

2002-12-09 Thread marius rogn

I'm running LTSP (Thin clients), on Woody, and recently my most popular
application, The Gimp, started to cause huge .xsession-errors files, the file would
grow until it took 100% of the partition in a mather of minutes. The files contains
millions of identical lines:
"gimp segmentation fault", or to that affect. This happens on different client, but
with the same hardware, and to different users.

Since I can't babysit the LTSP-server, I had to remove The Gimp, sadly, the kids loves
it.

I'm wondering what I can to to solve this problem. What is the problem with The Gimp?
Whta can I do to stop .xsession-errors from growing so huge? This is truely a stopper.

No, not really. I'm stuck at the very beginning. Beginning meaning I can
get the login prompt for "Setup/Config Admin Login" and "Header Admin
Login", but as soon as I enter the proper password I'm greeted by a nice
white page that says

"Warning: Failed opening

in ./inc/class.setup.inc.php on line 42

Fatal error: db is not a class in ./inc/class.setup.inc.php on line 43"

I've tried copying /phpgwapi/inc/class.db.inc.php as well as
/phpgwapi/inc/class.db_mysql.inc.php to the proper location to be opened
in place of the file causing the error, but all that does is give me a
white page - minus the error mentioned above. :-)

Below is a list of all the packages I've installed for this project, so
far, for whatever it's worth.

php3
php3-cgi
php3-imap
php3-mysql
phpgroupware

phpgroupware-chat
phpgroupware-core
phpgroupware-forum

phpgroupware-polls
phpgroupware-preferences
phpgroupware-setup
libdbd-mysql-perl
libmysqlclient

Re: NVidia Riva TNT PCI with XFree86

2002-12-09 Thread Wim De Smet
Hi,

This isn't true. These packages are for the nvidia kernel drivers, which are the
nvidia propietary drivers.
The X server contains a package for nvidia cards named "nv". This is a free driver,
but doesn't contain any 3d
acceleration. You probably misconfigured the x server somewhere.

A good way to debug your XF86Config-4 is typing:
X -configure
Then see if it starts up. If it does, just look at the file created in the directory
you were in while running this command,
it should have a name like XF86Config.new or something, and find the differences with
your config file (especially in the
"device" section).

RE: Can't read my cdrom...

2002-12-09 Thread alan brown

You were correct to assume I'm a complete newbie. However, in my
tinkerings I did actually try what you suggested. I got a mount point
does not exist problem. I didn't then go the extra logical step of just
creating a directory at that point and then retrying the same command.
Trying that fixed the problem.

As a newbie, I often make erroneous assumptions about what commands will
achieve. 'mount' did more than I expected in one regard (it literally
gave me access to my device without any other hassle). But it did less
in another regard (it didn't create the directory for me, but insisted
the mount point be a directory that already existed). So I did the
'mkdir /cdrom' followed by 'mount /dev/cdrom /cdrom' and all was
suddenly well with the world again (except the weather).

Thanks for your help.

BTW - is there anywhere that all these questions and answers are
archived for searching? I keep all emails sent on this distribution,
but they only go back to December 4th.

Er, I'm not sure what level you're at so forgive me if I state the
obvious or miss your point...

/cdrom is just a directory like any other, you can just recreate it
using
mkdir /cdrom

The /etc/fstab file just says where things should be mounted, not where
they are mounted. To actually mount a CD, when you put a new one in the
drive, the command is
mount /dev/cdrom /cdrom

Then
umount /cdrom
when you remove it.
You may need to be root to run these. I guess the various GUIs have a
means of doing these things too... Not sure about that though.

Hope that helps

Chris

Yes. On the system do an lspci and see what comes up. It will normally
show you which chipsets are being used and you can then google for the
chipset plus linux and come up with information. Also doing a make
menuconfig from within the linux source tree will help you find what
drivers are supporting your hardware.

This is a quite common problem. Lots of discussions
and solutions from google, for example:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Linux/Linux_Setup/Q_10047032.html

Yeilds this:

Try booting with linux append="hda=xx,xx,xx" (where
the xx's
denote C(ylinders),H(eads),S(ectors per track). Once
you've
booted up and Lilo knows the geometry of your drive,
put a
permanent line in /etc/lilo.conf (the same append
statement
without the word linux) & re-rerun /sbin/lilo. Next
time you
boot it should be able to boot off hda2.

A better solution of course would be to simply
reinstall Lilo
to the MBR - it will boot '95 just fine, but try the
above if
you don't want to go that route.

As well as this:

On my system: /usr/doc/lilo-0.19-1/README

I'll paste some relevant parts here:

When LILO loads itself, it displays the word "LILO".
Each letter is printed
before or after performing some specific action. If
LILO fails at some
point, the letters printed so far can be used to
identify the problem. This
is described in more detail in the technical overview.

[snip]

L ... The first stage boot loader has been
loaded and started,
but it can't load the second stage boot loader. The
two-digit error
codes indicate the type of problem. (See also
section "Disk error
codes".) This condition usually indicates a media
failure or a geometry
mismatch (e.g. bad disk parameters, see section
"Disk geometry").

What exactly have you got in the MBR, btw? ;-)

That's not quite true. Older (and newer, misused) port-scanners can get
pretty bogged down when faced with a host dropping packets.

This comes from lilo which is probably bad configured. edit
/etc/lilo.conf to reflects the kernel you want to boot and run lilo.

IIRC proftpd comes with build-in SSL support. So it looks for a
certificate when starting. Nothing to worry about if you don't use SSL.

Correct. nmap displays a scanned port as "filtered" even if you DROP the
packet. If you respong to a ping but DROP all port scans it's clear to
all hackers that you have a packetfilter.

The one and only good thing about DROP'ing is that you piss off script
kiddies when they try to portscan your box since the scan will take
ages. (correct me if i'm wrong)

> All you really accomplish is pissing off

Really? Normal users don't scan blocked Ports. And if they mistype an IP
it's their problem not mine :)

> and detouring the incompetant cracker
> that wouldn't get in anyway.

Correct. Skilled hackers will own your box in any case. You can only try
to make it harder for them to do so (ie: it takes longer).

Safe Sex Shell + Condom = Total Protection性安套+安全套=全范围保护

2002-12-09 Thread George Lin
Safe Sex Shell + Condom = Total Protection

The Safe Sex Shell is a circular plastic shell with a protrusive hole on the center.
See http://www.sexsafe.biz

This product is to be used in combination with a condom. The protrusion wraps around
the mouth of the condom, holding securely
in place, thereby reducing the likelihood of it falling off.

Whereas condoms only cover parts of the penis from contact with body fluids, the shell
joins together with the condom to
protect the entire penis and surrounding areas, further eliminating the risk of
contagion. The protrusion also produces a
tension around the penis, reducing the blood flow and increasing the duration of
erection.

The small protrusions around the center protrusion touch the female, let her feel more
happy.

The Safe Sex Shell is invented by Mr. Lin Hua and got patent. Mr. Lin Hua wishes to
cooperate with you to promote the product
to world. If you are interested in the product, you can contact [EMAIL PROTECTED];

Check the syslog to see what processes are initiating the connection.
When -- for instance -- fetchmail awakens the diald, it'll hang up again
as soon as it's done fetching unless some other process has started
using the connection in the meantime. (I used to use an IRC client as a
linefill/keepalive.) Either disable the daemons that are making
connections, or configure them to connect less frequently, or get rid of
diald and stick to connecting with pon, which won't hang up until you
poff.

I'm having the same problem with the modem speaker not turning off --
I've got "M0" in the init string, but it doesn't turn off the speaker
like it's supposed to.

You need to load the APM module. Add the line:

apm

to your /etc/modules file. Or, if your laptop has ACPI, enable those
modules instead. Also, to avoid rebooting, you can also load APM
immediately as root with the command:

modprobe apm

crontab

2002-12-09 Thread Steve
Hello:

I'm new to Debian although I have some experience with other distros.

I'm having some difficutlty running my own cronjob. Debian seems to be a little
different than what I'm used to in this regard. It ignores my defined crontab.

I set up a crontab to run at hourly intervals as both user root and user news.
This is to run leafnode. By accident I noticed that there was a daily cronjob
set up I guess by the Leafnode deb, but I don't understand how it works - it
references the debian-config in my /etc/news/leafnode directory.

Comments, suggestions welcome.

Fetchmail doesn't fetch

2002-12-09 Thread Sam Rosenfeld
My command of "fetchmail" yields an index of messages which hangs and
then after it times out (300 sec), gives the reason for the error as
"7". ?The manpage says this condition (fetchmail timing out) can occur
"while waiting for the server."

I am using linux 2.2.20, debian woody, exim, and mutt -- service by
dialup to ISP. The mail service worked find until I started playing
around with some not-very-esoteric aspects of the software.
(Unfortunately, I do not remember all that I did, except that I did make
some changes as root (what hubris!).

I'd appreciate any help that can get me and my mail together again. ?(I
can use webmail to access my mail server, but it's damn tedious.

Ok, the usual chant at this point:

Version of fetchmail?
Copy of fetchmailrc?
Results of fetchmail -v -v?

Mozilla 1.2 libjsj.so

2002-12-09 Thread Warren Dodge
Has anyone else had this problem? When I start any of the 1.2-series mozilla's
installed from standard sid .debs I get the following error:

/usr/lib/mozilla/mozilla-bin: relocation error: /usr/lib/libjsj.so:
undefined symbol: __vt_24nsASingleFragmentCString

I don't see any bugs against mozilla-browser (that's where libjsj.so comes
from) and can't find any references to "mozilla" and "libjsj.so" on google.

So far I have tried:
* removing the user profile directory
* purging and reinstalling all mozilla and related packages
* changing default locale from en_US to C and back

Any ideas? Thanks

Warren

cryptoloop as user?

2002-12-09 Thread ernst
Hi

I'm useing cryptoloop to protect my data on a ibmx20 laptop. Im running
2.4.19 kernel with the cryptoloop and cryptoapi modules innstalled.

As root, I have created a file with dd, used blowfish as cipher and
mounted it trough loop0, so far so good.

But I am wondering if there is an easyer way to du this, I would like to
do this in bootup, as user.

The way I'm doint it now is (as root):
losetup -e blowfish -k 128 /dev/loop0 /usr/tmp/my_crypt_file
mount /dev/loop0 /home/ernst/mnt/my_crypt_file
chown -R ernst:users /home/ernst/mnt/crypt

Then I'm there, I can work on my docs as a user, but I'm wondering if
there is an easyer way of soing it?

To release this again I'm doing :
umount /dev/loop0
losetup -d /dev/loop0

Please help

/ernst

Just to clarify, there should be multiple directories under
${JAVA_HOME}/jre/plugin/i386 - one for Netscape 4 type browsers, one for
Netscape 6 (and earlier Mozilla,) and one for Netscape 6.10 and all
recent Mozilla. Link libjavaplugin_oji.so symbolically to the Mozilla
plugins directory as javaplugin.so if you are using debs for Mozilla (in
which case your plugin directory is probably /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins,)
or ${MOZILLA_HOME}/plugins if you are installing via the Mozilla.org
installer, and there you use the full libjavaplugin_oji.so name for the
link.

Although I'm not personally aware of the situation with Java on other
architectures, I presume that the situation is comparable there.

Compaq Presario 4500

2002-12-09 Thread Vince Hillier
I just got 2 old Compaq Presario's, one is model 4504 and the other a 4508.
After the debian install hanging about 400 times, I finally got it installed
(in parts I might add - Partitioned harddisk, froze, reboot, initialize
paritions, install base, froze, ...).

Now that it is installed, it boots up fine, but when I do anything, for
instance try to load the modules 8139too, I get kernel panics, then after
one of them, it's a chain reaction, and I get about 10 of them. It ends up
stopping at (I can't see the whole output)

Code: 89 46 04 89 30 8b 41 08 89 c2 2b 54 24 14 81 fa ff 00 00 00
<0> Kernel Panic: Aiee, killing interrupt handler!
In interrupt handler - not syncing

Than the box is frozen, nothing works.

Has anyone successfully installed and used debian on these models from
Compaq? I have searched around on google, and it appears that Compaq has A
LOT of problems with Linux. Anyhow, I got the boxes for really cheap $70
for both, and was planning on using them for NAT'ing or something...

Thanks!

Re: changing a computer's name

2002-12-09 Thread Jeff Cours
Following up for the archives. It looks like reversing the order of
the names in /etc/hosts and rebooting did the trick. I'm guessing
that, instead of reading /etc/hostname, some daemons try to discover
the hostname by doing a reverse resolution on 127.0.0.1. In any case,
the machine now seems to have gone back to just one personality. :-)

Thanks for the suggestions!
