A member of a local user group found the following solution. It is simple and works great. The following is his message to me. "A Google search on "vncserver" and "blank" yields many links. And this one http://lists.ximian.com/archives/public/gnome-2-snapshots/2002-September/000370.html or http://tinyurl.com/3pix offers a workaround: add a line "unset SESSION_MANAGER" before the "exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc" line in your ~/.vnc/xstartup file. I tried it, and it seems to work.
