A member of a local user group found the following solution. It is
simple and works great.

The following is his message to me.

offers a workaround:  add a line "unset SESSION_MANAGER" before the
"exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc" line in your ~/.vnc/xstartup file.

I tried it, and it seems to work.
