xinitrc appears to be an if then script. I am still trying to read it. At least this is educational. I am still new to scripting. The problem appears to be with the default WM (in RH 8.0?) not allowing more than one desktop at the user level. Logging on as a second user from the command line and starting VNC server allows the user connection needed for now.
