From: "Ashley M. Kirchner" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > My cable connections goes into a LinkSys modem first, and from there it connects through ethernet to whichever computer I want it on. I figured I may be able to just connect the linux box to it, and have the second NIC handle the internal network, yes? I just wasn't sure if there were any particular caveats I should be aware of before I do this.
Yup, that would work. My preference would be to connect the Linksys firewall to the Linksys modem, and take it from there. It does introduce a separate box, but the big advantage I found was that I do whatever I wanted to with the my Linux system (I was running bleeding edge software for a while as a learning exercise) and not have my wife get upset that she had no network connectivity. The Linksys firewall currently handles port forwarding for the Linux server I have inside. Because the Linux system now has a static IP address, I get the bonus of being able to use Apache's named virtual hosts. Both approaches will work, and both have their advantages and disadvantages. You can check http://www.cablemodeminfo.com/linbasics.x.html-ssi for a *lot* of info on connecting a Linux system to a cable modem.
