What I'm saying is do NOT plug your modem directly into the
hub/switch for your network. You want to either plug the
ethernet modem into a linux router box with firewall, etc
and then plug a second nic into your hub/switch, OR you can
get a cable/dsl router (approximately $100 at office supply
stores or major electronics stores) and plug the modem into
THAT and then from there, plug THAT (router) into your
network.

Again, if you plug your modem directly into the hub,
a firewall will protect exactly ONE box. You need to either
get a router and plug the DSL modem into that and then plug
the router into the hub/switch (switch is better.... less
"cross-talk" and more efficient throughput) or put a second
ethernet card into your linux box and use it as a router.
Even better than two nics in one machine would be to get a
low-end pentium computer, load it up with RAM (32-64 megs
SHOULD be sufficient) and use it as a stand-alone firewall.
And, yes, you're right. It's a HUGE security issue. Most of
the DLS modems here in the BellSouth service area are
external boxes which have an ethernet port on one side.
Your best bet would be to etiher run a separate firewall
box or a hardware router.
