KDE starts too slow for my tastes. But, it also uses much more ram and
CPU time than I prefer. It still likes to load too much into use at once
for me.

I prefer something much lighter, say XFCE (very light but, I never
figured out how to get it to do what I wanted with keyboard shortcuts,
and while the taskbar was sizeable, it didn't have small sizing increments
that would have made it better for me) or icewm (also very light, really
configurable, great shortcutting ability, gnome-aware/compliant if
desired, now kde-aware). I then just run the apps from gnome or KDE that I
want.

Even at that, loading some programs from either gnome or KDE can start up
several other processes that hang around long after they're needed. For
instance, call up konqueror and it will call up about 10 other processes
to support it, processes that would already be running if using the k
desktop. Kill konqueror and the 10 processes remain and have to be killed
manually.

So, I'm trying to get rid of even those things in KDE and gnome that I
can find other programs for. Unfortunately, there aren't any of
sufficient quality for some of them.

This is at 200MHz, 64MB ram (maxxed-out, thank you very much Gateway!)
and used to be on a 150MHz, 96MB (which I might return to due to this
stupid mobo on this machine). I'm considering getting a faster machine if
I can approach the idea without having to start a household war over it
(there are 3 PCs here now, and used to be 4).
