Like most disagreements, there is truth on both sides.  Microsoft didn't 
invent any wheels - but they did bring wheels to the masses - that has value. 
If Microsoft didn't do it, Steve Jobs may have.  However, Microsoft was 
clearly better at bringing to the masses than others.

This created a huge amount of interest in the GUI from users and hence 
developers. 

Microsoft is playing the role that IBM did back when MS was getting started.  
Then, PCs weren't serious until IBM jumped in the game.  Today, (though it 
has already changed) a software package wasn't serious until MS attempted to 
integrate, buy, or prepackage it with Windows.  Thats when you know you made 
it - it is also when everyone (not just geeks) starts to use it .
