You can't run the commands direct from the directory (I believe it is a
safety precaution of some kind?).

You need to put ./ in front of commands when you're in the directory.

BUT - I personally think you should wonder over to the Linux Documentation
Project and grab a copy of the 'Linux Administrator Guide', before you go
any further.

It tells you all this stuff, including TAR commands, and a hell of a lot
more.

Invaluable resource for me when I started out.
