That's a tough one.  :-)

I wouldn't actually recommend to do it, but if you desperately need to
install that other package I'd definitely recommend to test it in a lab
machine first.  As you said, the glibc libraries are the foundation upon
which the whole OS is written and messing with them could have really bad
consequences.  

I believe there is some documentation online on how to perform the
upgrade.  I guess you could either do a search or perhaps go to the LDP
site looking for it.
