Until very recently, lilo could only load the kernel if it was below the 1024 cylinder and if the first 24GB are Win98, you're certainly above that for Linux. I don't know whether it's possible to download the latest lilo and somehow make it work w/o booting Linux or not. I suspect if you get a boot disk from somewhere and then install the latest lilo, you could get it to work, but I can't give explicit instructions for this.
