I don't really see a reason for you to upgrade your distribution if XFree
is the problem. You would want to get one distrib "going", have it
configured properly and be done with it. I think you should apply the
errata's and upgrade XFree. 

ownload the rpm's and run

        rpm -Uvh --test your_rpm.i386.rpm

to see if there're problems. Then you run the same command without
"--test". That will upgrade XFree.

Make a copy of your original /etc/X11/XF86Config just to be on the save
side.
