Indeed Gnome has a bad reputation when talking about installing the beast.
And i fully agree when looking at that point of view.
However, the latest versions of Gnome are (as Elliot pointed out for me)
are still in the development branch while waiting for the 1.2 release
(April ?).
Maybe ive gone blind while trying to get the latest and scariest Gnome
software to compile every day :)
But i have to say one thing, the mess stated in your post are being
seriosly adressed by www.helixcode.com.

The Helix Gnome desktop are real nice, are installed by a very nice and
clean GTK+ based installation program.
Updates are handled by The Helix Gnome updater (much like up2date).
Consider to take a look at their version.
