Daniel,

After the buggy GNOME release that shipped with RH V6.0, the folks at RH
probably are cautious/confused as I am as to how to upgrade the GNOME
libraries/rpm's packages to get to the next stable release of the GNOME
desktop.

I sure had a tough time figuring out what to do to upgrade GNOME to the next
stable release (RH V6.1?). I'm not alone, as most answers from numerous
Usenet posts suggested I just upgrade to RH6.1, rather than try to figure
out what RPM's needed to be obtained/run to upgrade GNOME to the level it
was at for RH V6.1 release. Not liking that approach to things (sounds like
the familiar M$ "jsut reload Windows fix") I decided to figure out how to
upgrade just GNOME.

Well, it took *weeks* and numerous posts before I managed to upgrade GNOME
from the RH V6.0 release to the GNOME V1.0.53 stable release (GNOME as
released with RH V6.1??). Without the help of a GNOME.org RPM dependancy
support Guru, I would have not got past all of the RPM dependancy problems I
ran into. Red Hat site was *no help* at all.

So, I have a working system with GNOME Base upgraded to 1.0.53 stable and
GNOME development libraries RHV6.0 ancient (I decided to quit while I was
ahead).

Perhaps I need to read through the GNOME.org web site, or subscribe to
different mail lists, but to date, I have not found clear documentation
defining packages that comprise GNOME stable releases (Base + Devlp) as well
as concise procedures on how to get GNOME (as a whole) from once stable
release to the next.

It may be no wonder that Red Hat decided not to address updating the GNOME
desktop that ships with V6.2. They can't figure it out, either.
