To configure a mouse, use /usr/sbin/mouseconfig
/usr/bin/X11/Xconfigurator will work, but no sense in using a cannon
to drill a small hole.
Xconfigurator is Red Hat's tool to configure your windowing system,
X11 (XFree86). There is also XFree86config, which is what comes with the
XFree86 package. Xconfigurator will use the values in /etc/sysconfig/mouse
or else it will assume a Microsoft compatible mouseon device /dev/cua0
(according to man page).
I have a PS/2 mouse. My /etc/sysconfig/mouse looks like:
FULLNAME="Generic - 3 Button Mouse (PS/2)"
MOUSETYPE="ps/2"
XEMU3="no"
XMOUSETYPE="PS/2"
(I'm not emulating 3 buttons (XEMU3="no")
It's good to know that most things can be configured by hand if you don't
remember what tool to use. Tools don't always get things right and
occasionally you have to go in by hand and fix them. Nice thing about Linux:
you CAN go in by hand to configure most things if you want.
In this case, I'd just use mouseconfig first.
Also, you can (almost) always get to a console window by:
Ctrl-Alt-F2, logging in as root, run mouseconfig, or Xconfigurator, or
list processes and kill them, in case your mouse or windows seem to be
locked up. Ctrl-Alt-F7 gets you back to your main windows session.
