something like
127.blah blah localhost
192.168.255.255 hollow
in the etc/hosts I cannot remember the exact number, but I only put one not
a range.

What do you mean by "putting in the number assigned by your ISP". Are you
talking about the primary and secondary DNS cvalues required by my ISP for
ppp? Also how do I single boot I'm using loadlin not lilo. Another post to
someone else with the same problem on this list suggests that if I wait long
enough the machine will boot pass "start sendmail" is this true? I did wait
a fair while before the vulcan nerve pinch. Thanks for your prompt reply.
