1) on another login session, run "tail -f /var/log/messages" and see
what pppd is complaining about in real time.  then let us know.

2) make sure you have the right parameters for the chat script.
i use mindspring and it turns out that, depending on the city
i'm in, the local number uses either "username:" or "login:"
as the login prompt.  if i use one and it keeps hanging at that
point in the connection, i try the other.
