I did have a similar problem.

It basically boiled down to X expecting more video memory than the card
actualy had. For some reason it didn't probe properly. I set it to how
much mem it had, then it worked fine.

I didn't bother to find out *what* caused it to probe improperly, but
that's how I worked my way around it.
