This ongoing discussion remains focused on the big manufacturers,
has anyone out there considered the shops that specialize in
Linux systems? No, we're not Dell/Gateway/Micron. But at one time
they were us. We deal regularly with the government, businesses, and
universities. Among our customers are UNC-Wilmington, Duke, Rutgers,
NC State, Steven F. Austin State, Georgia State and Appalachian State
Universities. The National Institutes of Health, the Pentagon, and
other government entities that prefer to remain unknown. (One such
entity recently placed an order for a 26 node Alpha Beowulf cluster)
A couple of Fortune-ranked companies are on the list (NVU, Hughes
Electronics), and many, many, many small to medium sized businesses.
One software company has purchased an average of $50,000 from us
annually since we opened our doors over two years ago.

We spend thousands of dollars marketing to the Linux community and
a like amount supporting the community through such things as Linux
International, Linux Expo, ALS and contributions to folks such as the
XFree project. We work hard to provide exactly what you folks say you
want from Dell/Gateway/Micron, that being a system that runs Linux without
quirks and someone who can answer *most* of your questions when they arise.
No, we don't have the answer to everything Linux, but we do have a lot
of answers and systems that are built exclusively for Linux. Feature for
feature I think you'll find that most Linux system vendors offer
tremendous value for the money. Check out a configuration from
one of the big guys and then compare that to a system of like
components from a Linux company. I think you'll be surprised. If
you don't care about top of the line components you can find systems for
less than the big guys without much trouble.

Installation quirks in our systems? Not likely. :-) My grandmother
could install Linux on our machines.
