Yeah I am aware of that they are ofcourse the same except some patches..!! But clearcase officially supports only kernels 2.4.20-8 , 2.4.20-9&2.4.20-12.9(not available through redhat update site) , so we must be running only the supported kernel , even if it is not much different from the latest kernel version. So the clearcase 5.0 may run with the kernel 2.4.20-18.9 , unless it is supported by clearcase(Rational) , our policy won't allow to run it.
So I come back to my earlier question - what are the differences between the kernels 2.4.20-8 and 2.4.20-18.9 versions with respect to vulnerabilities - any pointers to any links or any suggestions? What do you mean "only supports upto RedHat 9 kernel 2.4.20-8"? Both 2.4.20-8 and 2.4.20-18.9 are 2.4.20 kernels. They're in general the same kernel, only slightly differently patched (e.g. to backport the security fixes). Have you tried Clearcase with the newer 2.4.20 kernel? My guess is that it might just work.
