The one thing that prevented most Graphical applications from running was the hassle with getting X to run on the system, layering an X Server on top of Aqua probably wasn't that hard to do and all of the sudden their at least trippled the amount of applications that will be available on the Mac.
What is going to be more interresting to see is if they are going to support an Aqua theme for X and make it available to developers so that the end user will never know the difference between a native MacOSX application and a Unix application.
