GMC is Gnome Midnight Commander, the original file manager for Gnome.
Nautilus used to be dog slow, but recently a lot of speed issues have
been addressed. I dont think RH9 ships with the most recent Nautilus, so
before you ditch it, please try the latest version.

Try these to speed up your experience: Try using the 'nice' command to
increase X's kernel priority ( sorry Ive never needed to do it, please
google for howto ), ask Nautilus to stop rendering the desktop, replace
any large bitmaps ( such as backgrounds ) with solid colors, ...

Can anyone else think of any more tweaks?
