RH9 is dog-slow out of the box. Most of the blame probably belongs to KDE/GNOME, though. I dumped them in favor of TWM, and my system now runs faster than it did running 8.0. KDE seems to use an inordinate amount of memory/swap/CPU switching between virtual desktops, and GNOME 2 uses Nautilus, which is a real memory pig AND a slow-poke to boot.
