All,

I can only say that certifications will only help when searching
for a job with companies that have no internal ties to one self.
Personally, I only hold A+, Linux+ and the certification for Windows
2000 Professional and I was able to land the job I currently hold only
due to the people that I know.

Of course, it also helps to have a nice resume from any previous
places of employment.

For instance, at a previous job, at a major multinational
corporation, I ran a UNIX study group that met every Monday evening for
roughly 2 hours. In that study group, I greatly increased my own
knowledge about *NIX and also gave everyone involved a wonderful
introduction to that platform.

I ran that group for two reasons, both of which are rather
"selfish", I must admit... The first was to greatly increase my own
knowledge, as it is a well known fact that a person learns and reatins
more while researching a subject to teach to others. Secondly, I was
culling favor with the higher ups in order to move myself into the data
center from the "Hell" Desk job that I was employed in.

Needless to say, it would have worked too, if it hadn't been for
those meddling kids and that damnable talking dog... er... I mean, if I
hadn't been offered the position I currently hold, which looks far
better on my resume.

Over the next few years, as I do things with Linux that I
haven't had the opportunity to do professionally previously. My
knowledge will grow tremendously on the subject and I should have little
issues with passing the Linux certification tests that are out there.
Once I do that, then I can start looking for bigger and better things in
places that I have no personal ties to.

Subject: RE: RHCE looking for a job

Hello All,

I'm certified RHCE and CNNA and also looking for work. Located in
France, I
can say that the market is brutal here and in Euroland -- the tech
bubble
that burst long ago has now translated into lower earnings for tech
companies across the world and into responses from HR departments
similar to
that cited below by Madame King. Add to this the general unease and
uncertainty in political arena and the picture dims further.

Even with considerable experience, I would still argue that
certifications
have value. RHCE is a performance based and measures not only a
candidates
breadth of knowledge, but demands speed and accuracy as well. Taking the
time to certify exemplifies a commitment on behalf of the candidate to
unequivocally demonstrate his or her skill level. Others may argue that
they
are worthless, perhaps they are, but to their holders and potential
employers, they represent a quanitifiable and verifiable body of work.

What a terrible thing that there are young people, eager to work, with
great qualifications who have "punched all the right buttons", yet can't
even get an interview!

Don't take it personally, Sergey. I know it feels like it is personal,
but
it's not. The world economy is in really bad shape. You've proven that
you'll work hard and do what has to be done. That effort shows great
initiative and drive. If I had a job to offer here, I'd get in touch
with
you. But I'm sure you've heard the refrain: no money, no money, no
money.
Not for hardware or personnel.

Hang in there. It's bound to turn around sometime in our lifetimes...

(P.S. Anyone that's been in this business for any length of time at all
has had to "work for food" at one time or another. You're just paying
your
dues early.)

it's very sorry to know.. but the reason behind it is that GNU/Linux
requires
knowledge as its primary requisite, not certification..
