You serious? You know better than that! Thrashing hard disk means something
is going on. You DO NOT pull a plug at that stage. I've had hard disks
thrash for 10 minutes before. No biggie. Depends on what it's doing at the
time.

Probably. Try booting single and running chkconfig to turn SMB off on
runlevel 3 or 5 (whatever you're using)
