That got me in.  THANKS!!!

I was trying to figure out how to remove it from /etc/rc.d/rc5.d without
deleting it.  Glad you answered me just in time.

Do you think I should try to mount the SMB filesytem or leave well
enough alone?  :-)

Boot single user. Edit your /etc/fstab file and comment out the smb
filesystems.  Boot normally. Then investigate, for example by
uncommenting one and then saying:
        mount /the/smb/mountpoint
and seeing if you get some kind of useful error message.
