One problem with the Red Hat distro is that it boots its kernel from
/boot, but new kernels go, by default, to root when you do a make zlilo.
Therefore, you are probably not actually booting your newly made kernel.
You need to modify your /etc/lilo.conf file. I like to add an entry at the
top called "linux", and change the Red Hat kernel tagname to "stock" or
"redhat" to use as a backup.
If you send me your /etc/lilo.conf file I'll make the modifications for
you and send it back.
