In text mode, do you have more than 80 columns and 25 rows? If so, that
might be the cause of the incorrect characters when you exit X. Check
your init files (/etc/rc.d/*) to see if SVGATextMode is being started.
Also, check your /etc/lilo.conf to see if there is a "vga=" line there.
If either one of these is there, that's probably causing the text
corruption that you're seeing.

You can try 'reset', but I don't recall whether that fixes the
problem or not.
