To fix the size problem. hit ctrl-alt + (use the numberpad's + sign)
That will change between video modes.

If your brave you can manualy edit /etc/X11/XF86Config to get rid of that
small screen....it's down near the bottom of that file that changes need to
be made.
Make a backup of that file before changing anything though.
Also try running  xf86config  to reset it things. Again make a backup of
that file.
