i believe in research, preparation, education and intelligence, through any
medium (HOWTO, manual pages, email lists, verbal and written communication,
etc...).

i began using RedHat at release 4.1 and manually kept up to date with
errata's, problems and fixes to be compatible, if not equal to, 4.2.

when RedHat 5.0 came out, i immediately wanted to upgrade (reinstall) and
stay current not only because i like having the latest "stuff", but, i knew
it would generally be an improvement to RedHat's previously nice releases.

with very minimal research, time and effort, i was aware that RedHat 5.0
was built almost entirely with glibc and that it would not be backwards
compatible previous RedHat distributions. I remember spending a small
amount of time reading the RedHat 5.0 manual before the distribution was
released, as it was conveniently placed on-line prior to the distro being
released.

i strive to be positive yet honest.

one could and should have easily researched such a large issue before
purchasing and/or upgrading. as importantly, publicly complaining about it
and indirectly faulting RedHat for not bill boarding this particular fact
and ensuring you were aware of it, is not productive.

i initially believed a positive side of this thread was that RedHat will be
aware that issues such as this one are not being made completely clear to
everyone. however, after researching and recalling how easily and
naturally this information logically obtained, i changed my mind.
