Don't let the date on a book dictate its usefulness. "The UNIX
Programming Environment" by Kernighan and Pike was published in 1984 and
it is still a great book to help you get started with shell programming.
In fact, I was quite surprised to see how up-to-date this book is, nearly
all of it is still applicable and usually the only difference is that the
name of the command has changed.

"Running Linux 2nd Ed" is an excellent book, I would recommend it to
nearly anyone starting out with Linux. I have amassed a small "library"
of UN*X related books and I find myself referring to "Running Linux" quite
often, along with "UNIX Power Tools" and "Essential System
Administration." If you are totally new to UNIX, Linux, etc then you
might pick up "Learning the UNIX Operating System 4th Ed" also, it's less
than $10, about 100 pages and nearly priceless for getting the basics down
quickly.
