First, if its running nicely, why do you want to upgrade?  And your
worried about stability, yet your running a 2.1.x kernel?

There are several things you can do, without destroying your existing 4.2
installation:

- install a second hard disk, used to dual-boot between the two

- install 5.0 as a 'change-root' install, meaning you'd basically get 5.0
on one console, and 4.2 on another

- Download the 5.0 glibc libs from sunsite, and install them in an
alternate location, and add that location to your /etc/ld.so.conf, so
libraries that require glibc libs will use them, otherwise use the default
4.2 libs.  Haven't actually tried this, but it may require a few other
changes, like the installation of a second /usr/include tree...
