DONT GET AN NE2000 CLONE!!! Although cheap (20 bucks for pci) they are
SLOW. Its an ISA card stuck onto a PCI bus. I started with this since it
was the only card RH 5.0 would recognize during install. Get a full duplex
card. You can find 3com for about 50 bucks (10baseT only) or you can use a
dec clone (tulip driver). I now use a Linksys etherfast 10/100. I got it
for 39.00. It is a full duplex card and performs quite well. They also
provide installation support for linux and the only NIC that sys it
supports
The only draw back is that I had to upgrade my driver (tulip.o) before the
card would work. If you have a modular kernel this is a piece of cake.
Get the drivers and install instructions from
http://maximus.bmen.tulane.edu/~siekas/tulip.html. I'm a newbie and I was
able to do the modular kernel install (chapter six in the RH 5.0 manual) a
then install the driver and the card worked :).
