Get one of the $20 or $30 NE2000 clones.  I use the Genius GE2000 cards,
which work fine without any tweaking to the driver.  Some NE2000 cards
aren't exactly compatible and don't autodetect well, but I haven't ever
heard of one which absolutely would not work.  And they sure are cheap. :)

If you're more interested in performance than price, the Tulip-based
DEC/Intel cards work real well.  3com is another good choice for
high-performance cards that cost a little more than the NE2000's, as all
of their cards especially the ISA ones work.
