For sure !
I use to work on an ISP that has more than 8000 clients :). The Box is a
Redhat 5.0 Dual Pentium Pro 200MHz 256MB RAM, and it works really good.
We had to patch the kernel with the file-descriptor patch though. Sendmail is
also 8.8.7 that comes with Redhat installation (no modification done). For
POP3 I'm using qpopper-2.4. With a little of time and pacience you can
configure the server to run really smooth.
PD: I still give Linux support for this ISP :)
