I haven't tried upgrading to Firefox 50 yet so this is pure
speculation.

What you're seeing seems to indicate that firefox 50 (or
the underlying toolkit) is using something that needs GL acceleration
to display the menus. The fallback code is either completely broken or
assumes that you are running a compositing window manager (which cwm
isn't). You can try to launch xcompmgr(1) in your X session to see if
it fixes the problem.
