Every camera club has it's own voice and feel.

Since your friend's club is so new, things will be in flux for a while
until it stabilizes.

If it doesn't work for you, don't feel bad about not wanting to join
it full time. There are likely many groups in your area. There may
be an umbrella club organization that he can affiliate with and get
support and guidance, or he can go independent.

In my club, we have members who shoot with P&S, up to the occasional
pro that joins up. We also have regular workshops of various topics.
I've seen some real bad pictures entered into competitions, and some
real stunners entered, there is room for everyone and we try not to
take it too seriously. The social aspect is also worthwhile, it may
be the only time some members get to socialize with other
photographers who share their interest.
